Object Found Glowing In Woods Indentified As County Mosquito Trap

(Updated 2:00 p.m.) The mystery object found with a light glowing in the woods in Bluff Springs late Monday night has been officially identified as a mosquito trap placed there by Escambia County.
“Escambia County Mosquito Control is using a carbon dioxide light trap for the purpose of collecting mosquitoes. Most recently a trap was placed off of Dawson Road in Century. These traps are randomly placed throughout the county to collect mosquitoes for identifying the breed and tracking the habitats,” said Sonya Daniel, Escambia County public information manager. “Light traps are placed out in the evening with a cooler of dry ice, which attracts the mosquitoes. The trap and cooler are collected the next morning and mosquito control staff analyze the samples.”
The Century Station of Escambia Fire Rescue was first dispatched to an unknown type fire on Dawson Road just off of Bluff Springs Road about 10:15 p.m. When they arrived, they did not find a fire but what was described as some sort of electronic device with a light. Firefighters called the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office to the scene to investigate.
The object was described by authorities as having a battery powered light attached to a tree, and a rope or string leading from the light to a cooler. Deputies called narcotics investigators to the scene, thinking that the setup may have been related to illegal drugs. From the shoulder of Dawson Road, only a faint light could be seen glowing just off the ground a few feet into the woods.
Daniel said the public should not touch a or handle the equipment or cooler if they spot a mosquito light trap because the dry ice can burn skin.

Now it makes sense. Attracted to carbon dioxide, the mosquitoes expertly track both humans and animals, using trails of exhaled carbon dioxide as a guide or scent. In addition, just like most any other insect, light attracts the mosquito, making the beacon an effective part of a mosquito trap. It’s still nice to know for sure what something is, and it amuses me somewhat to learn that it was simply a mosquito trap and nothing more sinister.
Dang, I was sure it was the famous Mobile Leprechaun — after all, he’s got me GOLD!
Glad to finally know what this really was out there, but one wouldn’t think that Mosquitoes would actually be out with such cold weather, and you would have thought if Escambia County was putting these out; then the police, fire department and everyone involved should have known about this, and what it actually was…

Mosquito control why don’t you just come to my house and I will give you all the mosquitos you need. And on you way why don’t you bring that little white truck that you run through the communities maybe two time a year SPITTING out that very light spray that you call killing mosquitos and make the trip worth while. With the rain we have had this year we have better be gearing up for more mosquito bites and no telling what we will catch from them. I just wish Mosquito control would control the mosquitos — not take them to the Lab and play with them all day.

Just an FYI for everyone — we are following up on the whole situation that happened last night/early this morning with the ’skeeter trap. We’ll explain the whole sequence of events in greater detail in the morning. Still working on talking to all of the right people this afternoon.

Are you guys serious? All of you seriously thought that mosquito trap (seen all over the area at various times of the year) was “a mysterious light”?
I can’t believe that the fire dept and the police were that naive. They should have known what it was and if they didn’t, they should have been able to get answers a lot quicker than that.
And as far as meth labs only being in Santa Rosa, surely you jest! They’re all over Escambia too. SR just does a better job of finding and busting them than we do.

so what this tells me is if i build a large flashlight from random stuff and leave a cooler or other unrelated item close by in my woods I won’t be lonely anymore? I will have callers at all hours coming to see the mysterious glowing object. I downloaded some schematics from the internet to build the new and improved “tax dollar drain kit” guaranteed to drain the public funds of taxpayer dollars to cover investigation expenses. I don’t have an extra cooler so I think i will use an empty kitty liter bucket. LOL

There is a big ol’ boy that lives in Bluff Springs, so maybe he just leaves snacks in strategic places,just in case he gets the munchies suddenly.

There really are a lot of people looking into this trying to come up with the official answer. Current thinking leads toward a mosquito trap of some sorts that might belong to the county. We will continue to follow the story and post whenever there is an official answer.

I know a guy who is 6′ 2″, wears a 16EEE shoe, does he qualify.
My opinion: The cooler is “bait” for sasquatch, swamp booger, skunk ape, bigfoot or whatever you prefer. The location is close to the river and its high waters which are probably causing them to push into private property. Someone knows they habitually open coolers and has rigged something which may be designed to signal that event by radio or to trigger an audio recorder to pick-up “chatter”. Google “The Sierra Sounds”. Cameras have been rigged in coolers by investigators attempting to get photographs which may be worth millions if good quality and convincing. I was wondering why the helicopters kept flying over and circling over various areas around my neck of the woods yesterday. Thought maybe their was another escaped convict on the loose we didn’t know about. Last thing on my mind was a cooler with a string & beacon light! HA
Pretty cool when with just a battery powered light, a piece of string and a cooler you can mobilize half of the county’s emergency response team.
I’ll bet with just s few dollars more you could get the governor to mobilize the National Guard.

Well at first I was going to scream “the aliens are coming, the aliens are coming!”, but after reading about the cooler it does seem likely to be a narcotic drop with some fancy beacon to help somebody find it..
