Four Injured In Flomaton Wreck; One Suffers Amputation (With Photo Gallery)
December 10, 2009
(Updated) Two highway contract workers were critically injured in an accident on Highway 31 east of Flomaton Thursday afternoon.
Both were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola by two LifeFlight helicopters. One suffered a complete leg amputation and one suffered severe leg injuries
The men were part of a work crew laying sod on the edge of Highway 31 near Oil Well Road. They were working in front of their Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck about 3:45, next to a guardrail, when the rear of the truck was struck by a delivery truck. The amputation occurred as the pickup truck pushed the two men along the guardrail, according to officials on the scene.
A third worker suffered a head injury after jumping over the guardrail. He was transported by ambulance to D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton, as was the driver of a delivery truck.

You need a “big signs that flash and tell you to move over”, to know there is a truck on side of the road? When you see someone having car trouble, do you not try to move to the other lane, when a police officer has someone pulled over on side of the road, do you not try to move over, you use common sense there but not when you know people are working, cause I read one person on here said, the speed limit was 35 mph and people had been working for a while.
Well The Correct thing to do is not Park a truck on a Bridge and also have a flag man…One Little Light dose nothing to let you know there are men working…Common Since says to place those big heavy barrels 1/2 a mile in advance and have one of those big signs that flash and tell you to move over…
The correct info is, I can see the lights were on, on top of the work truck.
Thanks laural for the correct information everyone need’s to know.
107.10 Barricades and Warning Signs.
The Contractor shall provide, erect and maintain all necessary barricades, suitable and sufficient
lights, danger signals, signs, and other traffic control devices; shall provide qualified flagmen where
necessary to direct traffic; and shall take all necessary precautions for the protection of the work and
safety of the public. Highways or parts of the work closed to traffic shall be protected by effective
barricades; obstructions shall be delineated; suitable warning signs shall be provided to properly
control and direct traffic. All signs, barricades, etc. shall be reflectorized in an approved manner and if
directed by the Engineer, supplemented with warning lights or illumination to increase their
effectiveness.
The Contractor shall erect warning signs in advance of any place on the project where operations
may interfere with the use of the road by traffic, and at all intermediate points where the new work
crosses or coincides with an existing road. Such warning signs shall be placed and maintained in
accordance with the plans furnished. No signs, barricades, lights or other protective devices shall be
dismantled or removed without permission of the Engineer.
All barricades, warning signs, lights, temporary signs, and other protective devices shall conform
with the MUTCD.
Yes they still have their love ones but not home for Christmas or new years. The fact that they still have them doesn’t stop them from worrying themselves sick over them. They probably won’t be home for MONTHS. Ever seen or heard a two year old cry and ask for their Mom or Dad, makes you want to never forget or forgive. And then there’s the scars emotional and physical they have to deal with the rest of their lives
And if all this turned out to be from someones carelessness, how could you expect them to forget?
what is wrong with all of You? yes this is a accident. both party’s have fault. but why can’t You all be thankful we still have our loved ones! this is the holidays! enjoy life instead of pointing fingers at the bread man. he has family too.
Amen….and Ann may God bless you and your family.
I know you are probably a family member Melanie , so I’m not going to be hard on you. BUT God will put into motion what he sees fit, it’s not up to man now. I disagree the bible is not all about love, most of the bible is about God’s wrath on mankind. Evil comes in many forms and if someone is being careless in their everyday life, to where someone could get hurt and THEY KNOW their carelessness could get someone hurt, that is extremely evil to me.
My last word on this subject, I hope something good comes to each of the families involved.
the verse references not to “get back” at an evildoer….and no one was evil…the entire chapter is teaching God’s love and how we should show our love . Everyone is accountable for everyday actions and God wants us all to love each other and not condemn, but show love.
Pray that God will reach down an touch the two men injuried! Gods says have faith..it only takes faith the size of a mustard seed! Pray that God will give the family comfort and faith!
Sooo….is the breadman in any kind of trouble? Or is the wreck still under investigation?
Accidents have causes, if the cause here was driver error, then yes, hold him accountable for his actions. And if you don’t think God punishes, you need to go read your bible. Romans 12:19 says, Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
I have to reiterate….this is an “ACCIDENT”….Im not sure how anyone could be guilty of an “ACCIDENT” …….I am praying for all involved, I know there are alot of lives that have been changed. I will continue to pray for each and everyone involved, including family members because it affects each of our lives. As we face each day….every step we make, we all need to realize that we are all capable of “ACCIDENTS” as none of us are perfect. I serve a God of love, one of peace and forgiveness not a punishable one and for that I am thankful !
Sorry i just saw the wife’s comment. I have a 5 year old son and i COULDN”T not even imangen what you are going through but i will pray for god to hold you and your family in this time of need.
Victimns Aunt,
I am SOOOOOOO Sorry to hear that. Your family will deffently be in my prayer as I lay down tonight. I am heartbroken to hear this so close to the holidays and i know no amount of words could fix this problem that you are going through, but i do know that god will hold you in his hands at this time of need if you just pary and let him hold you.
I am one of the victims Aunts. I have read all the comments, forgiveness is one thing, paying for your mistakes is another. I could say alot of things but let me just give you an update. He was life flighted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. He has internal bleeding, broken ribs, collapsed lung, they took out his spleen and they are trying to save both his legs. They are keeping him asleep right now cause he would be in so much pain, he would probably have a heart attack if they let him wake up. His right leg has a chunk of bone missing, this is the leg they are worried he might loss. His right leg is broke in several places, with a compound fracture in his right knee and his right ankle is it pieces. His heart-rate was up to 150 but it is slowing coming down each day. They are going to do one of the surgeries Tuesday , if he keep doing okay. He has a long road ahead of him . This man worked hard for his family, not rich by no means. He has a two year son and a wife. Our family will pull through this, we know this is in Gods hands but even God punishes the guilty.
To the wife I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help you..maybe someone needs to do a car wash or take up donations to help you out I would be willing to help just contact lilcindyus2000@yahoo.com
No such thing as a motor vehicle accident. It may be unintentional and it may have contributing or mitigating factors; but when you look at the facts, there’s nothing accidental about it.
95% of motor vehicle crashes and personal injuries are due to bad decision making; 5% are due to environmental or equipment issues-Fact from Liberty Mutual Insurance Company’s Risk Management Research Institute.
IM THE WIFE OF ONE OF THE VICTIMS SOOO YES HE DOES HAVE A FAMILY ALSO A TWO YEAR OLD SON. HE IS IN STABLE CONDITION BUT HAVE A LONG WAYS TO GO. HE WILL HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO WALK AGAIN AND WE R LOOKING AT SO MANY SURGERYS. I DONT BLAME ANYONE BUT EVERYONE DOES NEED TO PAY MORE ATTENTION OF WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND THEM WHILE DRIVING. AND TAKE REPONSABILTY FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS WE WILL NOT HAVE HIM HOME FOR CHRISTMAS AND REALLY DONT KNOW WHEN HE WILL BE ABLE TO COME HOME. NOBODY KNOWS HOW HARD IT IS UNTIL YOU ARE IN MY SHOES.HE IS STILL IN ACCU. BUT THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR PRAYERS.
Amanda he is not the only one with a family and I know that he didn’t get up Thursday morning and plan on hurting people. Like I said we need to pray for all involved in theis accident
This is Why a ACCIDENT is called a ACCIDENT. No One should be Blamed for this tragic accident. You know Something like a Flag Man Should have been Present Expecially when working so close to the road and no where to go. Like Becky Said This Breadman is a nice guy and had a good driving Record. He Would have Never do something like this on Purpose. I hope He Makes a Quick Recovery and can come back to work since he has a family to provide for.
May God Bless you Joe!
becky i didn’t blame the breadman . but i did see the accident
There is too much speculation in the world today. Everyone is talking down to the Bread Truck Driver, like it’s all his fault. We all understand something went wrong, only the driver knows what really happened. Anyone ever think of that?? Don’t make him out to be the bad guy here, his just as much of a victim as everyone else that day.
look i know the bread man personality and he is very nice and respect man and something had to gone wrong and you can’t judge by the picture and were you or anyone else in the bread truck and you don’t know what could have happen? ya’ll need to grow up and quite blame the breadman you don’t know what happen and ya’ll need quite saying bad things about the breadman and he is a good man and my god bless the breadman and only god knows what happpen
i am pray for you and your family the breadman
Thanks for the update Chris!!
Went to see the two gentlmen in the hospital. So far only one had an amputation and it happened during the accident, the other gentleman has both of his legs, but he is in critical care icu. One worker went to the hospital with an injury to his head. He checked out ok and was released. The driver of the bread truck suffered broken bones in his leg. All of these individuals and their families need our prayers. I saw the accident happen, and to tell the truth four men should have died, but GOD has a plan for these young men.
These people and their families have been put on a national prayer chain.
My thoughts and prayers are with those who were invovled in the wreck.I missed being in this wreck by about 15 minutes, and im so thankful. I hope those who were injured have a good recovery. I know a bunch of people are praying for yall. It’s so sad for the ones who had leg amputations because your lives have changed dramatically.
Always remember: “I can do all things through Christ who Strenghthens me”–Philippians 4:13
THERE WILL BE JARS SET UP AT THE MARATHON (IN GREENVILLE AL),CHEVERON(IN GREENVILLE AL)AND AT FREDS (IN GREENVILLE). THERE HAS NOT ACTUALLY BEEN A FUND SET UP YET BUT WE ARE WORKING ON THAT ALSO BUT ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.ONE OF THE VICTIMS IS MY AUNTS HUSBAND AND TO THOSE WHO ARE PRAYIN THANK YOU.
problem is…….mistakes have a cost
Has a fund been set up yet for donations for the men and their famillies?
I know the driver of the bread truck personally. something must of happened. these guy’s who deliver bread get up so early in the morning. there is no telling what happened. this is so sad for this to happen so close to christmas.
Maybe the man driving the bread truck had a medical condition, heart attack, etc… please don’t jump to conclusions until you have the facts!
It was a tragic “ACCIDENT” with some very serious injuries. Let’s keep all those involved (and their families) in our prayers for right now. It’s too premature to know all the facts and details, so let’s not be so quick to put the blame on just one person at this time.
I just want to say thank you for everyones thoughts and prayers. No one knows what happened, and prayers are needed for ALL involved. Lift everyone up in prayers and know that I don’t think anyone would ever intentionally hurt someone in this manner. All those living in glass houses, please dont throw rocks.
Thank you Human, because that is what we are, we are human and we will make mistakes. Amen
Speeding – Went to sleep – just all kinds of excuses to find fault. Try observing, at the red light in front of the Tom Thumb at 113/31 and just watch the school buses fly by when school is let out. Now that will bring chills. Another thing when that COP from Flomaton responded to this wreck he was traveling way-way-way too fast when he ran thru the light at 113/31. Now that brings chills also. No lame duck excuse would change my mind about this (Obama’s famous lines, was “Acted Stupidly”) lack of mental judgement.
Sir: as bad as I hate to say it but, my son is a COP in South Florida and I’m saying, read your manual daily.

First, R Robinson my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family for your loss.
As for this incident, another case of a vehicle crashing into the back of a vehicle on the side of the road. Some weird law of physics or something going on here.
Prayers go out not only to the victims involved, but also the firemen and women and police officers that had to work this bad wreck.
I live in the Molino area…people out here think just because it’s the country (middle of nowhere) they can drive as fast as they want…Did the guy driving the bread truck NOT see the pick up??? I feel for the construction workers & thier families!!
An unfortunate and tragic example of why we have the move over law. No matter the vehicle on the side of the road (emergency, county, civilian) move over when able or slow considerably…. (no matter if you are going the speed limit or not)
what a horrible thing to have happen to so many families, especially at Christmas time
Well, we certainly don’t want to hold anyone accountable for this. Heaven knows that our society is one of ‘not my fault.’ Gee, how else can we judge people except by their actions; we certainly don’t know their heart. A terrible mistake happened here. Someone made a bad decision; or a series of bad decisions. I bet the law enforcement officer who worked this wreck knows exactly what happened. However…
If one vehicle is stopped and another is not and a collision occurs, speed must be a factor; not necessarily high speed, but speed, nonetheless.
Good grief, get a grip. Tragedies occur. Let’s hold those accountable…accountable. I wonder if that will heal these workers-or the driver in the bread truck?
I came upon this accident when it just happened, traffic was backed up, police everywhere and LifeFlight too. I didn’t see anything but my prayers go out to all involved in this accident. No matter who is at fault here. Both could be at fault here, State for not putting traffic cones out to protect workers and driver also, I’m sure lawyers will figure this case out. Someone is gonna pay big time in court, You can believe that. I pray for all concerned.
People need to get over themselves,, judging people by their actions. Just feel bad for the families and shut up. You weren’t there,, you dont know what happened. Everyone makes mistakes. Your no better or worse than the driver so quit making assumptions.
I am sending my prayers out to all that was involved in this bad wreck. May God bless you and your family. And driver all you can do is pray for the ones that was seriously hurt and ask for forgivenss from them and there families. Last but least if they are christians they will forgive. I can say that because my eleven year old daughter was in the car with two other people in a one car accident and she was the only one didn’t survive and i had to forgive in order to see Jesus Christ himself. May God Bless.
Human,
Your comments are much appreciated. I fear for people who cannot or do not put themselves in others’ shoes. They may have to wear them someday to see how they feel. They may be a bit tight. Ouch!
Closely related: One day I really saw the “as” in “forgive us our trespasses “AS” we forgive those who trespass against us. Big OUCH!
Every time something bad happens people get on here and make horrible comments toward the person at fault. Can’t you put yourself in their place and know how terrible they must feel. Have you ever made a mistake? Have you ever had a close call? Have you ever had something almost happen and say to yourself ….OMG, I need to watch what I’m doing. We are all human, please consider people’s feelings. God bless all involved, including the one at fault, whoever that may be.
well you know speed may or may not have been the factor here and its funny how people jump to conclusions when the article did not say anything about speed being the reason for the accident. any witnesses to the accident are the only ones that know the real cause of what happened. so its best not to point fingers until the investigation is complete. yes it is true that people speed in an area where they shouldnt but that may not have been the case here.
I travel this road on a regular basis. It is posted at 35 mph because of the construction (for the workers safety). From the looks of the collision I would guess that the bread truck was traveling a bit faster, wouldn’t you say? It’s only temporary until all the work is complete. Please try to help observe this temporary inconvenience and let’s not ruin any other families holiday season. This accident could have been prevented.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those involved. May God Bless them and there families.
This is so terrible, people should pay more attention to their driving and to whats going on; my thoughts and prayers go out to all involved….
Thanks for getting the information and photos posted so fast. Good Job.
Sad, sad story. I was through here the other day and there were cars passing me when I was trying to go the posted speed limit. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involoved.
