Wilma Jean Bowman Traylor

February 2, 2024

Wilma Jean Bowman Traylor died January 29, 2024, at the Residence Memory Care Community in Pensacola, Florida, at age 92.

Jean was born March 13, 1931, in DeKalb County, Alabama. She was a cheerleader at Fyffe High School and graduated in 1949. She married Delton Traylor in 1950, and they moved to Detroit, Michigan.

Upon returning to Sand Mountain in 1961, they opened a grocery store in Pisgah, Alabama. Jean handled payroll, purchasing, and personnel for the store. They retired and sold the Pisgah SuperValu in 1987.

Jean fulfilled her goal of visiting all fifty states. As a world traveler, she viewed kangaroos in the wild in Australia, kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland, watched the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, and walked the Great Wall of China. Jean purchased Christmas ornaments on all of her travels, and her granddaughter, Rachel, who accompanied her on several of those trips, treasures the collection.

As a long-time member of Pisgah Baptist Church, Jean directed the choir, sang solos, and led music there for many years. She and her husband were active in their community as members of Civitan and served as poll volunteers for local elections. They were very involved in the senior center in Rainsville until Delton’s death and Jean’s move to Florida to be near her son and his family.

Jean was a hard-working, dependable, and loyal daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. Her grandchildren have fond memories of spending weeks with them in the summers going fishing, working in the garden, and learning to drive.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Lector Bowman; her siblings, Joe Bowman and Dot Bowman Flarity Patton; and her husband of 69 years, Delton Hiram Traylor.
She is survived by her brother Don (Sue) Bowman; her son, Ted (Liz) Traylor; her grandchildren, Rachel (Brad) Hinote and Bennett (Jaclyn) Traylor; and her great-grandchildren, Kathryn Hinote, Elizabeth Hinote, Kellan Belleville, and Keegan Belleville.

Funeral services for Jean will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Pisgah Baptist Church, Pisgah, Alabama. Visitation will be from 9:45 to 11:00 AM and burial at New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.

Faith Chapel Funeral Home North, 1000 South Highway 29, Cantonment, is entrusted with arrangements.
