Escambia Children’s Trust Approves Hiring New Executive Director With Requested Pay Increase

January 11, 2024

The new executive director of the Escambia County Children’s Trust is getting a raise beginning with her first day on the job.

Lindsey Cannon asked that her salary be increased by $5,000 to $125,0000 a year plus benefits.

She had offered to forgo certain health benefits and moving expenses to fund the increase.

Her employment contract for $125,000 annual was approved Wednesday night on a 6-3 vote, with David Peaden, LumonMay, and David Williams voting no.

May saide couldn’t justify increasing the base salary, when there are so many children living in poverty in his district.

“I would like to see somebody come in, take the job, do a good job, and then at 12 months from now be evaluated and possibly have a raise,” Peaden remarked. “If we had advertised this job at $125K, maybe we would have had a different pool of candidates, we won’t know that. But I think she understood what it was walking in from the get-go when it was advertised $120K. I can’t be supportive of that salary increase at this time.”

Wow that’s insane! Teachers and administrators in the school system and bus transport all should be getting raises. Smh

She knew the pay when she applied. Why are we wasting money? This is an overpaid position that I’m not sure is really needed.

I don’t know why so many are complaining about this program, you voted for it lol when others predicted what was going to happen. Now people are struggling to make it , while they spend your money lol . Maybe someone should look and see this person is related to!!!

Disappointing. The job was advertised and candidates selected. We have lived here almost four years and taxes keep going up because of this wasteful spending.

I agree this Trust is a boondoggle, but J Larry Seale you apparently aren’t up to speed on today’s salaries.

NO one in this county deserves to be

Especially if there are suppose to be a
    public servant

@ Vivi—-I agree with you 110%. Big Brother and Big Sister and Boys and Girls Club of America, needs all the help they can get. I also would like to see an article explaining how the children of Escambia County have benefited from this Children’s Trust. We need to bring this back on the ballot.

Please publish an article explaining how the children of Escambia County have benefited from this Children’s Trust. It seems that the money would be better spent by distributing it to charitable organizations that work with children, rather than paying large salaries and probably exorbitant rent on office space.

Voters are perfectly happy with their county government so this is what they get.

This needs to be voted away. eSCAMbia County was duped.

Cannon said that not getting the extra $5,000 was a “deal breaker.” Raising her pay demand was a way to assert power over the board that caved 6-3. On the downside for her now the public and three board members know that she’s all about the money. The smart move for the board would have been to rescind Canon’s job offer and find out if the more qualified candidate Walker Wilson would still do the job for $120,000.

Who was stupid enough to vote this crap in?

It’s a bottomless pit of potential skullduggery at the taxpayer’s (property owner’s) expense.

We need to have another vote.

The various county government entities here are so ironic; they waste $, create unnecessary positions/duplication, yet the area seems to be heavily populated by voters with conservative-leaning political views.

History will bear out the reality so many ignore today.

She must be kicking herself for not asking for a lot more.
