Florida School Grades Released; How Did Your Child’s School Score?

December 12, 2023

The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) on Monday released school grades for the 2022-23 school year. For the fourth consecutive year, Escambia County earned an overall grade of “B”.

Four elementary schools earned an “F” — Montclair Elementary, Warrington Elementary, Lincoln Park Elementary, and the Global Learning Academy.

“These latest school grades come as no surprise, as we have been aware for quite some time about the changes the state was making to the grading formula this year,” said ECPS Superintendent Keith Leonard. “Because the number of components for each school’s grade calculation was decreased by four, changes, both positive and negative, were to be expected.

“Hopefully, next year, the state will go back to something similar to the original formula, so we can get a more accurate snapshot of the progress being made by our schools,” continued Leonard. “Make no mistake, we still have challenges, but we are more determined than ever to address those long-standing issues and work hard to prepare our students for their best possible futures.”

Its funny, many of you have not set a foot in a classroom in many years. All I hear is complaints about the jobs other people are doing. Maybe you should volunteer to work in a classroom and support the teachers who are required to meet the individual needs of each and every child in their classroom. Did you know each child is different? Before you tear someone down why don’t give them a hand up?

Bob missed the point Carolyn. You are right. Back to basics. It’s fiscally smart and better for the elementary schoolers. Might be tougher on teachers. Not being able to crutch on the tube so much. Use the extra money to raise the pay to FRONT LINE TEACHERS not the bureaucracy. Drive better quality workers to teach in our county.

    @Carolyn Bramblett

Right. Because computers are totally just a passing fad.

The problem in this district is Not leadership.. We have some good leadership in this county and some great teacher… The problem in many of the areas schools Who do not Perform well is home life… It’s hard for the district to change that… All our schools try hard to educate all our children… But parents have to Play a part of that… I continue to support our teachers and Mr. Leonard and best of luck helping our students to continue to learn.

The only answer is to toss the computers that the children have. Go back to pencil and paper for elementary schools which they never should have left to begin with. Leave the modern movement of stupidity and go back to elementary schools teaching the elementals of learning. They, the powers that be, ought to put all those people paid to train teachers which is utter nonsense back into the classrooms and make them do hands on teaching of students for the inflated pay they get.

@kane, you’re right. Most of these schools are actually a grade lower than this list portrays.

And mandatory drug testing. Couldn’t hurt.

Up the pay( yes cuts must be made elsewhere plenty to be had) get rid of tenure and the grades will go up.

Jerry Clower maybe had it right when he said,
“Johnny can’t read because he doesn’t want to learn to read.”
Add that to all the distractions kids have today and parents who
Are not truly involved in their children’s education.

@Alan, I think the problem is that we’ve always compared Apples to Apples before, grading on the same criteria from one year to the next. This year, the criteria changed, so we’re comparing Apples to Oranges. At least after this year, the criteria will stay the same, and we’ll be graded by comparing Oranges to Oranges.

They couldn’t make the students smarter, so they made the school testing requirements easier..

Got an idea!!!!! Let’s throw some more money at the OBVIOUS poor leadership and mismanagement issues

I am having a hard time reconsiling what Mr. Leonard is saying to the press release put out from the FDOE. This appears to be a new system the State has adopted and there will be no “going back to the original formula”.
