Obituary
David Gilbert Jasso graced this world on November 13, 1969, and entered the arms of our Lord surrounded by his loved ones on October 13, 2023.

David, or Dave as most called him, leaves behind a vast family who held him dear. He was the beloved son of Gil and Ann Jasso, the cherished brother of Greg Jasso and Susie Murphy, and brother-in-law to Ross Murphy. His wider family circle, which includes Clyde and Kathy Waller, Tommy and Jodi Waller, Wade and Ashley Hatcher, and many loving nieces and nephews, will forever hold warm memories of him. His legacy lives on through his three sons, who resemble him so much – Chad David, Charles Gregory, and Caden Thomas. By his side was his endlessly supportive and dear wife, Amy Jasso.

Born in Sumpter, SC, Dave’s childhood was filled with travels, thanks to his father’s Air Force duty, which took them around the U.S. and beyond. Though he enjoyed many of these places, he held Texas and New Mexico close to his heart, proudly claiming them as home. He played football and baseball in his youth and in high school. His love for sports only grew stronger in the years after, through coaching and cheering for his boys.

After high school, Dave attended the US Naval Academy. He was commissioned in May of 1992 and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in July 1994. While stationed in Pensacola, he found love, marrying Amy on September 24, 1994.

Dave’s first duty station took him to Whidbey Island, WA, where he became a part of the EA6-B community, earned his legendary call sign “Assman”, and built bonds that felt like family. After a distinguished Naval career, which included support for Operations Northern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom, Dave returned to Naval Station Pensacola for a third time in March 2012, where he served as NASP Executive Officer. Dave reported to Jacksonville University Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps in April 2015, where he served as the unit’s Executive Officer.

Retirement from the Navy led Dave to a new passion. Alongside Amy and with the help of a loyal, supportive staff, he opened Cantonment Ace Hardware in 2018. The store was a mirror to Dave’s own character – honesty, friendliness, and down-home candor.

Dave’s love for family, friends, his nation, and faith were evident in all aspects of his life. He enjoyed coaching his sons in football, baseball, and lacrosse, and later took joy in cheering them on from the stands. Quiet family weekends meant the world to him, especially when they involved watching his favorite teams – the Crimson Tide and the Dallas Cowboys – with his family. Always at the helm of the grill, Dave channeled his passion to serve up barbecue at gatherings with friends and family.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30am Monday, October 23, 2023, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, with Fr. James Valenzuela celebrant. Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, with full Navy honors.

In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the fight against ALK-positive cancer, a cause that is near and dear to our hearts. ALK-positive cancer is a type of cancer with no known cause and no known cure. No one should have to go through the journey Dave did.

Dave’s greatest legacy is the way he lived his life every day – his generosity to others, his quiet humor, and his very unique dance moves. We are all better for having known him. Fair winds and following seas, until we meet again.

Have You Donated In The Peanut Butter Challenge?

October 18, 2023

The annual Peanut Butter Challenge is now underway in Escambia County to help families in need.

The Peanut Butter Challenge, UF/IFAS Extension’s annual jar collection for local food pantries, first launched in the Florida Panhandle in 2012. It has since launched statewide, giving counties the chance to compete for most jars of peanut butter donated. The challenge serves a way to feed hungry families ahead of the holidays and also promotes peanuts grown in Florida.

Unopened, unexpired jars of peanut butter can be donated at the following locations through October 31:

  • Escambia County Extension, 3740 Stefani Road, Cantonment
  • Escambia County Farm Bureau, 153 Highway 97, Molino
  • Escambia County Public Safety, 6575 North W Street
  • Gilmore Services, 31 East Fairfield Drive
  • Escambia County Administration, 221 Palafox Place, 4th Floor
  • Holy Spirit Catholic, 10650 Gulf Beach Highway

In addition to the community donations, the Florida Peanut Producers Association (FPPA) and Florida Peanut Federation (FPF) have partnered with the project for years. These organizations are based in the northwest and northeast peanut-producing regions of the state and will again contribute to the totals distributed to food pantries in those regions.

Escambia County Celebrates Ribbon Cutting at Ashton Brosnaham Athletic Park

October 18, 2023

Escambia County Parks and Recreation and Pensacola Sports celebrated a new facility at the Ashton Brosnaham Athletic Park with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, just in time for the Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament scheduled to kick off at the park Oct. 29.

Escambia County District 5 Commissioner Steven Barry welcomed attendees and kicked off the ribbon cutting ceremony, joined by County Administrator Wes Moreno, Parks and Recreation Director Michael Rhodes, Pensacola Sports President and CEO Ray Palmer, and SEC Assistant Director of Competition Marcus Bishop.

“Ashton Brosnaham Park is a major asset to District 5 and our entire region, and I’m excited to bring even more amenities to this already incredible sports complex,” Barry said. “Thank you to Parks and Recreation staff, Pensacola Sports, and everyone who worked together to make this possible. I look forward to welcoming the SEC again in the heart of Escambia County and District 5.”

The Ashton Brosnaham Athletic Park will serve as the location for the SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament for the second year in a row, running Oct. 29 through Nov. 5. The 2022 event saw record-breaking attendance numbers and generated $2.5 million in local economic impact.

District 1 Commissioner Jeff Bergosh, District 4 Commissioner Robert Bender, county staff, and numerous community partners and citizens joined Escambia County to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the new two-story facility at Ashton Brosnaham Athletic Park. The new facility will serve as additional locker room space for the SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament, along with other sporting events including local youth, high school and college soccer.

Features at the facility include restrooms and showers for team sports use, an open space with sliding walls on the first floor, and meeting and office spaces on the second floor. The open space on the first floor will be available for rent and can be used for meetings, birthday parties and other community events.

“Recreation plays such an integral role in creating a high quality of life in our community,” Parks and Recreation Director Michael Rhodes said. “We’re proud to be able to provide facilities like this that not only attract large sporting events to Escambia County, but also benefit our local teams that use Ashton Brosnaham every day. I’m excited to continue to provide quality recreational opportunities and additional amenities like this for Escambia County residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Ashton Brosnaham Athletic Park is a 103-acre regional park located at 10370 Ashton Brosnaham Drive. In addition to being heavily used for soccer and softball, its many facilities include a dog park, covered pavilion, picnic area and 13 soccer fields.

October 18, 2023

International Paper will permanently cease operation of one of their production machines in Pensacola, the company said Wednesday.

IP announced a series of actions to further strengthen and optimize its manufacturing system to meet customers’ needs. The company will permanently close its containerboard mill in Orange, Texas, and will permanently cease production on two of its pulp machines – the #20 machine in Riegelwood, N.C., and the #4 machine in Pensacola

Locally, about 100 jobs are expected to be impacted.

We are committed to providing severance benefits, outplacement assistance and more to help employees during this time.”

he actions in Pensacola and Riegelwood will reduce IP’s pulp capacity by approximately 500,000 tons (300,000 tons fluff pulp and 200,000 tons southern bleached softwood). The company’s remaining pulp mill system will include eight mills with an annual production capability of 2.7MM tons.
