Wahoos Blast Past Rocket City

Griffin Conine hit a two-run triple and circled the bases on a throwing error in the eighth inning, breaking a late tie and leading the Pensacola Blue Wahoos to a 4-2 win over the Rocket City Trash Pandas on Tuesday evening.

With two outs and two men on base in the eighth in a 1-1 game, Conine hit a liner past a diving Trey Cabbage in right field to put the Blue Wahoos ahead by a pair. When the relay throw to third went into foul territory, Conine completed the circuit for the biggest play of the night.

The game began as a pitchers’ duel, as Pensacola’s George Soriano and Rocket City’s Brett Kerry traded zeroes. The Trash Pandas took the game’s first lead in the third inning on an Orlando Martinez RBI single, but the Blue Wahoos turned a Conine walk and a Luis Aviles Jr. sacrifice fly into the tying run in the fourth. Soriano delivered his first Double-A quality start, striking out a season-high eight batters over 6.0 one-run innings.

Conine’s triple against Sean McLaughlin (L, 1-2) made a winner of Josh Simpson (W, 2-0), who continued his dominant run with 2.0 scoreless relief innings and has now started his season with 15.2 scoreless frames.

Eli Villalobos (S, 2) allowed a solo home run to Braxton Martinez in the ninth, but struck out the next three batters to earn the save.

The Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Rocket City Trash Pandas on Wednesday.

Ian Fraser King

Ian Fraser King, 83, of Molino, FL passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2022.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; parents, Edward and Joan King; sister, Alison Diana Jones; and daughter, Angela Bonifay.Surviving are his children, Deborah Rossi (Robert), David King (Jackie), and Ted King (Jenny); grandchildren, Stephen Rossi, Jordan Jack, Jennifer Sanderson, Ian Nowling, and Olivia and Amelia King; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Julia Montesi; and a loving, extended family.

Ian (John) was born in Sutton Coldfield, England.He immigrated to the United States with his family living in River Edge, NJ and Bethel, CT.After high school, he became a US citizen and served in the US Navy for four years.While in the Navy he met and married his wife, Lillian.After the Navy, he raised his family in Pace while working for Air Products.He retired after 39 years and moved to Molino.His retirement years were spent working on and enjoying his property and scuba diving with his sons.He donated over 18 gallons of blood during his lifetime.He supported his church by serving as a trustee, maintaining the church, and singing in the choir (terribly!).He helped his wife establish the Molino Mid-County Historical Society and with the transformation of the vacant Molino School into the Molino Community Complex.

Donations in John’s memory may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 6915 US 29, Molino, FL 32577.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Rossi, Robert Rossi, Brian Montesi, Robert Mobley, Alan Smith, and Ted Hassebrock.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 12, 2022, 9:30-11:00am at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.Funeral services will be at the church immediately after visitation. Interment will follow in Aldersgate United Methodist Church Cemetery.

McDavid Man Accused Of Two Counts Of Aggravated Assault With A Deadly Weapon

A McDavid man is accused of ramming a vehicle with three occupants.

Jimmy Robert Wiggins, Jr., 43, was charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of criminal mischief.  He was released on a $9,000 bond.

The incident occurred April 4, and Wiggins was just recently arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Wiggins was driving a 2008 red Dodge Ram when he allegedly began to follow a SUV on Rigby Road near Bratt. Three individuals inside the SUV told deputies the same details, according to an arrest report.

The incident stemmed from an alleged relationship that one of the female SUV occupants was having with another man, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office report.

There were no injuries in the incident, and the SUV had about $300 in damages to the passenger side of the rear bumper.

One of the three SUV occupants declined to press charges.

Barrineau Park Historical Society Awards Scholarships To Tate, Northview Seniors

The Barrineau Park Historical Society recently awarded two academic scholarships.

Northview High School senior Ethan Kilburn was awarded a $1,000 academic scholarship. He plans to attend the University of West Florida in the fall to pursue a degree in cybersecurity.

Tate High School senior Alyssa Daniels was awarded a $1,000 Stephen Jogan academic scholarship. She will attend the University of Florida in the fall and major in sports management.

Otto Hill Recreation Area Closed For Renovations

The Otto Hill Recreation Area along the Perdido River is closed for renovations, according to the Northwest Florida Water Management District. No timeframe has been announced for  reopening.

The Otto Hill Recreation Area is located at 2401 Jacks Branch Road, just south of Fillingim Landing. It has a pavilion, portable toilet and reservation only campsite in addition to river access.

There are several short hiking trails — one of which leads to a picturesque sandbar approximately 100 yards from the main camp site. Under normal conditions, the river is shallow enough in this area to provide a fantastic swimming spot for children, according to the water district.

A short swim or paddle across the river leads visitors to another sandbar and more sunbathing opportunities.

Northview, Tate Begin Regional Tournament Play This Evening

The Tate Aggies and Northview Chiefs begin regional play this evening.

6A Baseball

In 6A baseball, No. 1 seed Pace will host No. 8 Forest (Ocala), and No. 5 Tate will travel to First Coast (Jacksonville). Both games are at 7 p.m. Tuesday with the winners meeting on May 13 in the regional semifinal.

1A Baseball

In 1A baseball, No. 1 seed Holmes County will host No. 4 Jay, and No. 2 Northview will host #3 Paxton. Both games will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10. The winners will play in the regional final on May 13.

1A Softball

In 1A softball, No. 1 seed Jay will host No. 4 Northview and No. 2 Holmes County will host Paxton on Thursday, May 12 in the regional semifinal. The winning teams will meet in the regional final on May 17.
