Library Board Cancels Century Meeting Due To Lack Of Quorum

The West Florida Library Board of Governance was set to hold a meeting in Century Monday afternoon — part of the board’s efforts to hold meetings and library locations across the county.
But the board was forced to cancel the meeting due to the lack of a quorum.
One seat of the five member board is currently vacant, and the board requires three members present to have a quorum and vote on business. Applications just closed April 20 for a new Escambia County appointee to the library board, and county commissioners have not met since that date to select an appointee.
The Library Board of Governance oversees the management of the West Florida Public Library System and makes recommendations to the Escambia County Commission.

ECFR: Fire That Claimed Life Of Family Pet Was Sparked By Electrical Outlet

Investigators have determined an electrical problem sparked a house fire Saturday afternoon in Gonzalez that claimed the life of a family pet.
Firefighters responded to a residential fire on the 900 block of New Haven Drive north of Old Chemstrand Road about 5:15 p.m.
Escambia County Fire Rescue said Monday afternoon that the fire was due to a faulty electrical outlet in one of the bedrooms. A dog was found deceased in that room. There were no other injuries reported.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the roof of the home, and they brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes.
ECFR said the home can be occupied after repairs are completed.
The Cantonment, Ensley, Bellview, Ferry Pass and Osceola stations of Escambia Fire Rescue, Pace Fire Department and Escambia County EMS were dispatched to the fire.

EREC Names Hetrick, Bott As Scholarship Winners

Escambia River Electric Cooperative has announced the winners of the 2022 Herman D. Johnson Scholarship Awards.
They are Sarah Hetrick from Escambia County (pictured left) and Hanna Bott of Santa Rosa County.
Hetrick is a senior at Northview High School and is the daughter of Joseph and Connie Hetrick. She plans to use this scholarship to pursue a nursing degree.
Hetrick is the senior class secretary and participates in several clubs such as Student Government Association, Math Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also holds many hours volunteering for Northwest Escambia Ballpark and First Baptist Church of Bratt.
Bott is a senior at Central High School and is the daughter of Penny Bott. Hannah hopes to follow in her mother’s footsteps as an elementary teacher.
Bott has held many offices in Key Club and Beta , and is currently volunteering at Olive Baptist Church and Chumuckla Elementary School. She was an EREC delegate for the Tallahassee Youth Tour and will be attending the Washington Youth Tour.
In the past, capital credits issued by EREC that were unclaimed had to be turned over to the state. But state legislation now allows such funds to be deposited into a qualified, educational charity fund. The EREC membership voted to use these funds in the form of scholarships.
School Bus Driver Cited By FHP For Causing Wreck

A school bus driver was cited for multiple offenses after causing a wreck Monday afternoon in Ensley, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the 61-year old male bus driver for Pentecostal Temple Church Ministry failed to see and rear-ended a car stopped for traffic on Highway 95A near Arthur Lane about 4:20 p.m.
The bus driver was uninjured, and there were no passengers on the bus. The 33-year old driver of the car suffered minor injuries.
FHP cited the bus driver for careless driving, no proof of insurance and driving a commercial vehicle without the proper endorsement.

Northview Softball Defeats Central Christian 15-1

The Northview Lady Chiefs defeated the Central Christian Saints 15-1 Monday night on the road.
Emma Gilmore went five innings for Northview, allowing three hits, one run and striking out nine.
Gilmore and Kayla Dixon led the Chiefs at the plate with two hits each. Northview also had on hit each from Chloe Ragsdale, Kailyn Watson, Kaitlin Gafford, Alanna Roberson and Aubrey Stuckey.

Escambia County Holds Hurricane Exercise

It’s that time of year again. Hurricane season is just around the corner, with the first official day on June 1.
Escambia County Emergency Management hosted their annual hurricane exercise Monday. It was a chance for different agencies and partners to gather at the Escambia County Emergency Operations Center to practice for the real thing.

Food Truck Court Proposed For Pine Forest Road In Cantonment

Plans are under review for a food truck court in Cantonment.
Kiem Nguyen is seeking approval from the Escambia County Development Review Committee for the food truck park on a vacant Pine Forest Road vacant lot, just north of the Dollar General and the Highway 297A intersection.
The 0.435 lot is about 76 feet wide and 250 feet deep, and is surrounded by the Dollar General to the south, a residence to the north and self storage units to the west.
The application for the food truck park shows 22 x 10 foot and 18 x 10 foot lots for food trucks, a central driveway, tables, benches, bathroom and an “open mic stage” to be located at the rear. The drawing indicates eight total food trucks and parking.
The Development Review Committee held a pre-application meeting on the proposal last week.

Blue Angels Team Members Practice With Molino Ballpark Softball Teams

Members of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels team recently visited with softball teams at Molino Ballpark.
The flight mechanic and pre-flight team members spoke with softball players about teamwork, answered questions and practiced a bit with the 12U and 16U teams.
