    Charlotte,
Welcome to Florida. I am assuming in your post you weren’t making fun of Pensacola for closing things down, you were making a statement that it is such a big difference than up north. (You did say you understand why things are done different in Pensacola compared to up north.) I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and your sister. Your husband’s service was very much appreciated! In a world of so much negativity, let’s play nice.

This is crazy. You folks are arguing over nothing. And don’t act like we had a lot of weather coming. We get a little ice and some flurries almost every year. Nothing needed to be shut down. The world would have been fine if it hadn’t happened. But the powers that be decided to shut some stuff down. More power to them. But what good comes from y’all being at each other’s throats? It’s a bit ridiculous. Both sides are arguing the same point.

A good call to close the schools for safety of EVERYONE. We get ice on those roads & it can be very hazardous driving, especially with some out there not knowing how to drive on ice. Snow better to drive on. As far as the other closures, maybe they could have looked at instead of full closure to come in for noon or so. I just tried to call Farm Hill Utilities, (they’re not on list of closures) and no answer. What’s up with them.

BARBARA. Just to let you know, you must be a very unhappy person to write such a hateful response. Number one, I was raised here in Pensacola. I know about hurricanes. Number 2, my husband was stationed up in the Northwest, and I fell in love with the Northwest, and after his Military plane went down and he was killed, I stayed up there to raise my kids. Fast forward, I moved back here to take care of a sister that was dying of cancer. After she passed, I decided to stay and be around family. Believe me, if I was able, which I”m not, I would be back up there in the Northwest, where people are more friendly.. I hope you have a nice day, and I will be praying for you.

I absolutely agree with closing schools today. As a former bus driver, you get up early to start your bus and you never know what the weather conditions will be like. Especially under these conditions. As for closing ALL county offices…I DISAGREE! I also used to work in a county office, and personnel don’t usually show up to work until 8:00 or 9:00 anyways. That’s plenty of time to assess the conditions then proceed.

OK, fine, let the schools be closed, but why the courts, city and town offices are closed? I bet the folks who work there will go to stores, gas stations etc. during cold days, like everybody else; they just will not show up for work.

  8. ????????????????????????? on January 21st, 2022 8:32 am

we have enough issues with plain wet roads. WE should start closing schools when it rains, when the sun is to hot, the wind blows, ETC.

  9. Well on January 21st, 2022 8:30 am

My My. We can’t drive on dry roads, wet roads or any other kind of roads.
So for most it’s just another day.

Good call on the closures and everyone be careful out there.

  10. Barbara on January 21st, 2022 7:39 am

Ms Bates: if Florida weather reactions amuse you so much, wait for hurricane season. We have a great system in place for that. You could always go back to your cold north & leave us to our beaches & sunshine. We resent your condescending attitude.

  11. Tyler on January 21st, 2022 7:23 am

Charolette did state that she understood that we don’t and they do have the equipment and are experienced with snow and ice. Sure is a lot of ill feeling towards her. I’m quite certain that we are all guilty ourselves being amused when the northern states have record breaking 100+ degree weather without the humidity and it makes national news (most houses up there don’t have AC) or the north east gets what we call a tropical storm and there are mass closures.

  12. Joanne Kennedy on January 21st, 2022 5:39 am

To the people who think closing stuff is wrong…..you have no idea! I have lived most of my life in the great white north…..Michigan, Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey, Maryland….and ice is not something to mess with. Especially when you don’t have the means to deal with it. So to Ms Charlotte….if you think it’s amusing, then go back to Idaho. It’s not amusing in Pensacola!.

  13. mnon on January 21st, 2022 12:00 am

@Charllotte, I’m glad you find us podunks amusing, when we get maybe a week of ice per year, if that. So we have no need to invest county funds in salt on every bridge and snow chains on all county vehicles.

Here’s your silver lining since you are so experienced in feet of snow and ice. Go run your errands, should be a very light traffic day for you.

and Welcome to Florida, if that amuses you, you should be laughing the rest of your life.

  14. Sandy on January 20th, 2022 11:49 pm

Ms. Bates, not everyone has had the experience of driving in 10 feet of snow because they’ve never lived under those conditions. Plus, knowing how to dress for those conditions vs having the clothes necessary because it hasn’t been needed is no reason to ridicule the cautions being taken by the local authorities.

  15. Cynthia C Walsh on January 20th, 2022 9:43 pm

@Charlotte Bates, we ARE NOT in Idaho and do not have equipment to treat ice and clear roads like they do in Idaho……..DUH! Obviously, the country is going to be cautious with regardsto our children’s safety. Get a clue, our area doesn’t usually deal with ice and or snow, so OBVIOUSLY precautions must be taken.

  16. Molino AC on January 20th, 2022 7:00 pm

As for schools in Santa Rosa County, the advisories don’t go East of the Escambia County/Santa Rosa County FL border.

  17. Molino AC on January 20th, 2022 6:58 pm

Our school busses are not equipped to handle icey conditions nor are a lot of us experience when driving on icey roads (we have enough issues with plain wet roads)

  18. Charlotte Rebecca Bates on January 20th, 2022 6:18 pm

I fully understand all this closer, but when I lived in Nothern Idaho, during the Winter months, we got anywhere from six to ten feet of snow, there was no closer of anything, unless it was Sunday. I also understand that we had the equipment to take care of the snow, and kids knew how to dress, and drivers were use to driving in the snow. But, I found it amusing to read this and think to myself, wow,.

Why are the schools closing every where but Santa Rosa county
