Cantonment Homicide Suspect Dies Days After Hanging Himself In The County Jail

The investigation continues into the homicide of an elderly woman in Cantonment.

Lukas Mackenzie Snelson, 24, was charged with second degree homicide, grand theft of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.

Last Thursday, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the end of Candy Lane in Cantonment for a death investigation. The victim was found deceased, seated in a recliner with two dog leashes wrapped around her neck, according to an arrest report obtained Monday. Her name and exact cause of death have not been released.

It was determined her 2018 Hyundai SUV was missing from the driveway. A family member told Escambia County Sheriff’s Office investigators that they were in contact with Snelson, who was claiming that he was currently with the victim in her vehicle, the report states. The family knew his claim was false because she was found deceased inside her home.

ECOS investigators located the vehicle and observed Snelson entering and exiting the vehicle in the parking lot of the Talecris Plasma Center at the intersection of Barrancas Avenue and Kincaid Street. Snelson was detained after a brief struggle in which he tried to pull away and run.

Snelson remains in the Escambia County Jail without bond.

@jane thank you @susie is clearly naive to reality and unable to comprehend how a person should be blamed for their own actions not the actions of another.. where were the parents?! Is the most ridiculous thing you can say he is 24..

@Susie- His father passed away years ago and his mother lives in a different state. His grandmother loved all of her grandchildren with all of her heart. She was trying to help him. He wasn’t with her because his parents just dumped him on her. His mother is a wonderful lady who did not raise him to be capable of something like this. He is a grown man and his fully responsible for his terrible actions. His mother is in no way to blame for this, in fact she’s one of the people who is most hurt by this. She’s already endured enough tragedy and loss of loved ones over the years, and now has just lost two more. Shame on you for ignorantly placing blame on her based off of your own assumptions. This family, his mother especially is devastated and already drowning in grief. The last thing they need is a stranger who has no idea what she is talking about placing blame on them. They are victims of this tragedy!

@Jodi, I suggest you reread my post again and get a better understanding of what I posted. Why was the grandmother responsible for his lazy rear? His 24 yr old butt should either be with his parents, on his own or someplace he could get help for his mental problems. Our grandparents should finally have a life of their own. It’s not hard to check on them for a change. Why force them to take care of another child? Parents should be responsible for their own children. Period.

@Susie he is 24. Parents don’t have anything to do with this and his drug problem

Every convicted murderer should be executed in 5 years using the same method that they killed their victims.

Again, WHERE WERE THE PARENTS? So many grandparents are taking care of their grandchildren (and grown children, for that matter) when the grown children should be taking care of their OWN kids and elderly. Past generations did this, you know. Where is the responsibility these days???

My heart goes out to the woman who endured the pain and fear inflicted on her by this selfish imbecile. God has you in His arms now.

My condolences go out to the family of the victim, it’s so sad that the victim was taken to soon. This lady had probably been helping this young man and he goes off and takes advantage of the situation and kills her probably about using her vehicle if the truth be known. I am so sick of these young punks killing the elderly for some of the reasons that they do. It’s so sad that a murder has it better than a veteran does, most of them are homeless. It’s so sad that they target the elderly, I truly hope justice is served, so the victims family can have peace of mind because there lives will never be the same. Condolences to the family, may God comfort your family in your time of need.
