North Escambia’s Newest Dollar General Opens; One More Opens Soon, Two Others In The Works

September 26, 2021

North Escambia’s newest Dollar General is now open, as another one is under construction and two more are planned in the area.

A quiet grand opening was held Friday for a new Dollar General at the corner of Highway 297A and West Kingsfield Road in Cantonment. Escambia County granted a conditional use to allow the 8,960 square foot store  in an area that is zoned for low density mixed-use up 6,000 square feet. A conditional use in the zoning category allows for retail sales up to 35,000 square feet.

The Escambia County Board of Adjustment approved the conditional use with the stipulation that the store have a residential area design with wood siding and a shingled roof.

Construction is nearing completion on a new 9,291 square foot Dollar General store in the 7000 block of North Century Boulevard in Century. An opening date has not been announced.

Dollar General’s development company has development applications for two more North Escambia stores in the works. One is on 1.89 acres on the west side of Highway 29 between Ten Mile Road and Roberts Road, just north of Kingline Equipment.

The second is in Walnut Hill at 7100 Highway 97, on the north side of the intersection of South Highway 99. There are currently two residential structures on the 5.3 acre property, which is across the road from a former farm supply retail business.

Yes, there are a lot of Dollar Generals. Yes, sometimes it seems the staff do not clean their store and try to keep it looking nice in a lot of areas. But instead of focusing only on the negative, try looking at the positive. I live 20 miles from the nearest Walmart. I am 10 – 15 miles away from a grocery store. Sometimes I do not want to travel to town to get just a few items. It is convenient having a Dollar General 3 miles from my house. Especially one where I can get basic canned goods, some frozen foods, milk and dairy products and even a limited amount of fresh produce. What to I get at Dollar General, a lot of things I need or want without having to travel miles to town and fight the crowds.

Oops almost forgot about the sewage treatment facility right in front of camp 5 (those chemical ponds belong to the paper plant if ya didn’t know now ya know)

    I love you commenters!!!

“There goes the neighborhood” What?! You mean the neighborhood that is less then 2 miles from Camp 5 and TEN VERY LARGE waste water ponds that empty into the creek that flows just under the bridge 2 BLOCKS from the actual store so please explain to me how this was a NICER neighborhood before the Dollar General moved in?!? You guys are great for a laugh.

Why so many dollar stores? I ask the same thing about tanning/nail salons, tatoo parlors, storage facilities, gas stations that prepare food, and any number of chain enterprises. We are selling out what is unique about our area to buy junk food and stuff we don’t need. There was a lot written about this when Walmart moved into more areas and shut down family businesses. When Walmart profits didn’t live up to expectations, they closed those stores, leaving rural areas with nothing, even jobs.

Please keep the parking lot lights on all night its a very dark corner and it’ll help delay when you get broken into.

Great….there goes the neighborhood. How long before there’s a shooting at this one?

Welcome to Cantonment FL home of fried chicken and trashed out Dollar Generals

I’m okay with DG except for the pig sty they rapidly become. The management needs to take pride in their store and set certain expectations from their staff members.

Customers can buy the Top Name Brand items for twice the money you pay at Walmart, Publix, Winn Dixie and Target. I’m referring to health and beauty aids, laundry soap, groceries, cleaning items, office supplies, pet food, greeting cards, gift wrap, home decor, seasonal decorations, kitchen utensils, bakeware, cell phone accessories, a great selection of Rexall first aid supplies and many many other items. The entire store is cheaper in price than elsewhere you go make purchases.

When Manna Food Bank is doing their food drive, I buy at least $30 in groceries to pack the Mayflower. They get several BOXES of food – i.e. Kraft Mac n Cheese $1, Chef Boyardee $1, Campbell’s soups $1, varieties of canned vegetables $1 and etc. I get more for my buck at Dollar General. It helps for all the times I feed the needy. Go to your local grocery store and buy $30 worth of food and see how much you get. Maybe 2 bags with their Campbell’s soup price @ $1.89 per can.

Nobody has to shop at Dollar General if you choose not to. But I do to save money and I shop at all Dollar General’s in Pensacola.

Thank you Dollar General for keeping the prices affordable. As far as the stores being disorganized or junky as some say, I can overlook that and continue my shopping. The employees are friendly and like their jobs.

This now makes 7, yes seven, DG’s within a 5 minute drive from my house. Can anyone seriously explain why I need that many around my home? For those who keep calling this a mom and pop store; no, its a huge corporation. This is going to hurt property values. You should see lost of the property around their other stores. Awsome!

  11. Niknak50 on September 27th, 2021 7:03 am

DG is much better at building stores than maintaining them. The one in Jay is plumb skanky.

“At least you don’t have to check yourself out.”

But you can. This store has a self checkout. It had crashed and was not working Saturday.

  13. Dave Coleson on September 26th, 2021 8:54 pm

They turn into DUMPS after 18 months. Short sighted economic plan by the county. These places sell overpriced junk. County should be ashamed to allow these major corporations to dominate here leaving NO room for small businesses. County has SOLD out the taxpayer.

Hope you all enjoy the trash and dilapidated buildings in just 18 months. What a joy to see.

Ever work at a dollar general? They pay pennies and never have enough employees. Ever try going through the line at dollar general? Good luck, they’ll have one person running the register and don’t care how long the line is. It’s not the small employees, it’s the corporation itself. They never have and never will staff these places enough.

They’ll only hire you part time with no benefits making this just another “part time job employer”

The County should have demanded they pay at least 15 an hour, FULL with health insurance. Otherwise, go elsewhere.

I understand DGs strategy of building in neighborhoods and appreciate the convenience, but what I don’t understand is why do they have such a hideous highlighter yellow, block letter signs that detracts from neighborhood aesthetics?

  15. Jackie on September 26th, 2021 6:58 pm

At least you don’t have to check yourself out.

  16. Malorie on September 26th, 2021 2:36 pm

Why do we need more generic places to buy fake food and crappy quality items…thats what we want! Thats why! Ignorant.

  17. Jeremy on September 26th, 2021 2:27 pm

Could this be done with the one planned for Walnut Hill? “The Escambia County Board of Adjustment approved the conditional use with the stipulation that the store have a residential area design with wood siding and a shingled roof.”

  18. Dennis Doheny on September 26th, 2021 12:36 pm

Why is there a Dollar Genral on Every Corner? Dollar General is over priced for what they have.

  19. Lisa Marie on September 26th, 2021 12:10 pm

You guys act like the town/city/county search out Dollar General to bring more stores.

  20. Eugene on September 26th, 2021 11:43 am

Destroy American businesses……then flood the area with Dollar General stores which import at least 40 % of their goods from China. Coincidence ? Or a long range plan…..

  21. Chris on September 26th, 2021 10:05 am

I don’t know who I’m upset with more. Dollar General for buying the property or the children/grandchildren for selling. That was a beautiful home on a beautiful piece of property with a great pond. Makes me sick to see it turned into this. Oh well, guess you gotta get in where you fit in. As a kid, we always found somewhere to play and there were no problems. Now people guard undeveloped property like it can somehow be made to disappear. The state buys up the rest. Especially along the rivers. To do anything on it, you need a permit just to get a permit. Won’t be long and I’m gonna make like Uncle Jed and move away from here, where my family has been since 1926. Sad.

  22. Sam on September 26th, 2021 9:58 am

Give it sometime the grass will be knee high and trash all over the place. No upkeep. Example every other Dollar General.

  23. Jason on September 26th, 2021 9:23 am

IMHO, all of these newly built Dollar Generals stores are like roadside litter. Just a blight on the community. I know some people look forward to having them for the convenience but in a years time they just become a neglected pig sty.

  24. Tim on September 26th, 2021 9:23 am

This has to be a money laundering scheme or something. There are at least a dozen Dollar Generals along/off Hwy 29 just from Pensacola to Century . In Century alone there are now 2 including the new one, and there’s a 3rd right over the state line in Flomation AL. There’s no way they’re making that much money.

  25. Local on September 26th, 2021 8:46 am

SMH why, build something other than DOLLAR GENERAL!!

  26. Anne on September 26th, 2021 7:35 am

“Dollar General within 5 miles of your home” was part of the Dollar General plan.
They do employ local folks and that is good.
Putting our long time Mom & Pop stores out of business is not good.
A Marvelous feeling morning, we’re gonna get outta the house and enjoy God’s Day.
    God Bless the USA….

  27. Brenda on September 26th, 2021 5:13 am

I love Dollar General. They have just about anything you need. They need to build one in McDavid.

  28. Jennifer berke on September 26th, 2021 1:37 am

Oh yay another Dollar General. How exciting. I mean seriously does this county have any imagination at all. I mean step outside the million chicken places and dollars stores.
