A Toaster, Cookies, Salt And Pepper From Amazon: Century Council Member Questions Town’s Online Purchases

July 21, 2021

Why can’t the Town of Century make more purchases locally, rather than ordering online from Amazon?

That’s a question council member Dynette Lewis has posed at their last two meetings.

The monthly bill lists for the town list about $2,450 in purchases from Amazon.com, including salt and pepper in a month.

“It’s ridiculous that we are ordering salt and pepper from Amazon,” Lewis said. “Somebody can take the time to go to the Dollar General store to purchase some of this stuff that is on this list.”

One month’s Amazon purchases have include some office supplies that may not be readily available in Century, but also several items that are sold in the town. Purchases have included: air freshener, muffins, Nestle Pure Life water, toner, cookies, a toaster, a $100 air fryer oven, file folders, copy paper, ink cartridges, other office supplies, toilet paper, a vacuum cleaner, and a can opener.

Mayor Ben Boutwell said the town will look at making purchases from local business when practical.

Beulah Motorcyclist Charged With Fleeing From Deputies

July 21, 2021

A motorcyclist from Beulah is facing a felony charge after allegedly fleeing from an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy while traveling the wrong way on Pine Forest Road.

Broc Everett Ellis, 33, was charged with felony fleeing and eluding with wanton disregard for persons or property, resisting arrest without violence, operating a motorcycle without a motorcycle endorsement, and possession of marijuana.

The deputy observed a motorcycle pass another vehicle in an unsafe manner on Pine Forest Road near Sharon Lane. The deputy turned around and activated his emergency lights.

“I observed the operator, later identified as Broc Ellis, look back at me where he then accelerated into oncoming traffic,” the deputy wrote in his report. The deputy turned off his emergency lights and backed off due to Ellis traveling northbound in the southbound lane.

Ellis turned into the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot where he struggled to get the motorcycle back on two wheels before proceeding down a dirt road in the area of Floral Tree Gardens, the report continues. His motorcycle was spotted at the woodline near Southern Self Storage on Pine Forest Road. Ellis ignored verbal commands to stop and fled on foot through the woods, the report states. Duncan’ Donuts employees pointed Ellis out to the deputy as he ran back toward the Walmart Neighborhood Market. The deputy caught up, and tackled Ellis.

Under the seat of Ellis’ motorcycle, deputies reported finding a plastic bag containing marijuana.

Ellis was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $12,000 bond.

Blue Wahoos Drop Series Opener 4-1 To Montgomery Biscuits

July 21, 2021

While the Blue Wahoos were able to avoid being no-hit for the second time in eight games, they were unable to escape defeat as the dropped the series opener to the Biscuits 3-1 at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium.

Tobias Myers turned in a career-best outing in which the right-hander pitched six perfect innings and struck out a career-high 12 batters.

Montgomery took the perfect game into the seventh, and it was until Peyton Burdick walked with one out before the Blue Wahoos had their first baserunner of the night.

Down 1-0, Pensacola still had to find a base0hit to avoid another no-hitter. Jordan Brink (W, 2-0) replaced Myers in the seventh and ran into trouble in the eighth inning. After striking out Demetrius Sims and Riley Mahan, Connor Justus battled a drew a two-out walk. The next batter, Galli Cribbs Jr., broke up the no-no with an RBI double to left to tie the game at 1-1.

However, Pensacola’s elation was short lived. Dylan Bice (L, 4-3) surrendered a two-run homer to Niko Hulsizer on an 0-2 pitch to give Montgomery a 3-1 lead. Chris Muller turned in a scoreless ninth inning for his 6th save of the year.

Griffin Conine—the son of Jeff Conine—made his Double-A debut for the Wahoos on Tuesday and finished the night 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. Matt Pobereyko also made his Blue Wahoos debut with a perfect sixth inning in which he struck out two.

Will Stewart made his 13th start of the year for the Blue Wahoos and churned out a solid performance. He allowed one run in five innings while scattering two hits and three walks. Stewart finished his night with five strikeouts and didn’t allow a base hit until the fifth inning.

The Wahoos and Biscuits will continue this series tomorrow night at 6:35 PM CT. RHP Max Meyer (4-1, 1.65) will take the hill for Pensacola and he will be opposed by RHP Jaden Murray.

CSX Train Derails Near McDavid; It’s Not A Public Safety Threat, But Environmental Cleanup To Follow

July 20, 2021

About two dozen cars of CSX train derailed in McDavid Monday night, but there was no reported danger to the public from the train’s cargo.

“We don’t have a public safety concern at this point, but it is going to be an environmental cleanup,” Escambia County interim Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore told NorthEcambia.com shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The derailment was reported about 10:35 p.m. north of the West Fraser Sawmill in McDavid. The southbound train engine came to a stop behind the sawmill, but the derailment was a mile north in a heavily wooded area about a mile east of Highway 29 (see map below).

A total of 25 cars derailed, including several tanker cars. Gilmore said one of the tanker cars contained molten sulfur, one contained liquid ammonium nitrate and at least two were empty but were previously loaded with molten phenol. Several hopper cars containing lime also derailed. The remainder contained other types of nonhazardous products or were empty.

“Three of the cars spilled some limestone rock adjacent to the tracks. No hazardous materials were released as a result of this incident,” CSX told NorthEscambia.com in an email Tuesday morning.

“The ECFR hazmat team conducted a visual inspection of the derailment and then utilized monitoring equipment to take air samples to determine if there was any immediate threat to public safety, the derailment was determined as a nonimmediate life threat,” Escambia Fire Rescue said in a statement.

“CSX is working closely with Escambia County first responders and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Initial reports indicate there is no public health threat. Crews are on site clearing the tracks of the derailed cars and working to restore the area,” CSX said. “The safety of the community and everyone on site is our top priority as we develop a recovery plan.”

Gilmore described the derailment scene as a “total pileup” with railcars on top of each other and destroyed track. Fire responders, including an Escambia Fire Rescue hazmat team, were able to access the derailment from each end, but not able to reach the middle of the site in the dark.

Due to the remote area of the site with no nearby roads, it took first responders about 45 minutes to locate and reach the area of derailment using a UTV and four-wheel drive vehicles on dirt hunting camp roads.

There were no injuries reported.

CSX said the train was headed from Nashville to Pensacola. The exact cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
