Two More Local COVID-19 Deaths Reported In Escambia, Santa Rosa; Escambia Cases Up By 26

Two more people in the Escambia and Santa Rosa counties have died from COVID-19, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Escambia County cases were up 26 on Friday to 532 with one additional death, an 82-year old female, for a total of 12.  Santa Rosa was up four to 158 cases and one additional death, a 64-year old male, for a total of eight.

While the FDOH has not confirmed, the sudden uptick in Escambia County cases is believed to be related to the surge in local nursing home testing.

Statewide, there were 34,728 cases including 33,829 Florida residents. There have been 5,767 hospitalizations and 1,314 deaths.

Second COVID-19 Death Reported In Escambia County, Alabama

The second COVID-19 death in Escambia County, Alabama,  was reported Friday by the Alabama Department of Health.

There are now 28 positive cases with on recorded death. There have been 509 total COVID-19 tests reported to the ADH.

Atmore Community Hospital has tested 288 patients with 22 positives. D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton has tested 157 people with three confirmed cases.

The Alabama Department of Health reported 7,085 total positive cases in the state out of 89.997 tests. There have been 279 deaths and 991 hospitalizations reported statewide.

Cantonment Woman Charged With Four Counts Of Welfare Fraud

A Cantonment woman is facing welfare fraud charges for failing to report she was actually working while collecting benefits over a four year period.

Ashley Sue Chamberlain was charged with four counts of welfare fraud for failing to report four jobs she held.

Chamberlain worked at the Pensacola School of Massage , Tom Thumb and Truelieve between 2015 and 2019, according to the State Attorney’s Office, without reporting her employment to the Department of Children and Family Services. She fraudulently collection Food Stamp Program and Medicaid Program benefits during the period, a court document states.

She was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

Escambia County Beaches Are Back Open. Here’s The Info To Know.

Beaches in Escambia are now open – with times and conditions — as of May 1.

Here’s the info to know:

  • Escambia County beaches, including the sound side, Gulf side, Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key open 30 minutes before sunrise and close 30 minutes after sunset, daily. [More: What is sunrise/sunset time a the beach?]
  • Pavilions, the Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier and the area around and under the fishing pier will remain closed.
  • The area under the pier is closed.
  • Groups are limited to 10 people or fewer. Beach goers should adhere to CDC social distancing measures by keeping a six-foot distance between others who are not in their immediate household.
  • Beach bathroom facilities remain closed and portable toilets are in place. Hand-washing stations will be provided.
  • Hand-washing stations will be provided. Dog parks will be reopened and permitted in designated areas.
  • Pensacola Beach Lifeguard towers are in place and lifeguards will continue to provide coverage at up to seven towers.
  • Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier will reopen Saturday, May 2. The pier will open 30 minutes before sunrise and close 30 minutes after sunset. The pier will be accepting anglers only. No pedestrians at this time. Every angler will be required to remain 6 feet apart. The pier will be clearly marked with 6-foot markers to ensure everyone is able to follow the CDC social distancing guidelines. Once the pier is at full capacity, new anglers will be admitted as spots become available with anglers leaving.
  • Pensacola Beach Lifeguards, Escambia County Code Enforcement, Escambia County Parks and Recreation staff and Santa Rosa Island Authority staff will monitor public beaches for social distancing compliance.
  • Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution when visiting the beach and swimming in the Gulf, especially when lifeguards are not present.
  • Tolls to the beach are now all electronic, no cash. [More info...]
  • Dog parks will be reopened and permitted in designated areas.
  • Beaches in the Gulf Islands National Seashore are not open.

No Injuries In Car, Semi Truck Crash On Highway 29 In McDavid

There were no injuries in a wreck involving a passenger car and a semi-truck Thursday evening on Highway 29 at Highway 164 in McDavid.

The driver of the southbound car apparently left the roadway, over corrected and crossed into the side of a southbound semi.

The McDavid Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol responded.

Toth Prefiles For Escambia County Soil and Water Conservation, Group 5

Louis Toth prefiled Thursday for  Escambia County Soil and Water Conservation, Group 5. This is a nonpartisan office that appears on the 2020 ballot.

The Escambia County Soil & Water Conservation District is a “special district established to provide for control and prevention of soil erosion and for furthering the conservation, development and utilization of soil and water resources, and the disposal of water, to preserve natural resources, control floods, assist in maintaining the navigability of rivers and harbors, preserve wildlife, protect the tax base and public lands, and protect and promote the health, safety and general welfare of the people”.

Saturday Food Giveaways: Molino, Olive Baptist, Flomaton

OLIVE BAPTIST CHURCH

The Ministry Village at Olive will hold a Community Drive-Thru Food Distribution on Saturday, May 2 beginning at 9 a.m. Over 40,000 pounds of food will be distributed to those in need in the community. There will be no paperwork to complete or guidelines to meet. The giveaway is open to all.

The drive-thru food distribution will start at 9:30 am at 1836 E. Olive Road in the front parking lot of Olive Baptist Church and continue while supplies last. Traffic will be directed to allow staff and volunteers to provide the food while following CDC distancing guidelines.  Enter the church parking lot from the Olive Road entrance (across from Walgreens). Watch for signs and volunteers who will be directing traffic.

MOLINO

A “Hope 4 Molino” drive-thru food distribution will be held Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. until the food is gone at Beacon of Hope Church of God at 314 Molino Road. Follow the posted signs upon arrival.

TOWN OF FLOMATON

Flomaton distributed over 11,000 pounds of  food last Saturday, and they are doing it again this week.

The Flomaton food giveaway will be held Saturday, May 2 at 10 a.m. the Flomaton Community Center at 600 McCurdy Street. Persons are asked to follow the route in the map below provided by the Flomaton Police Department. Signs and police officers will direct people in the direction they need to go. Persons receiving food must stay in their vehicle at all times. Each person will be also asked a few simple questions.

The town collected $1,500 to buy the truckload of food for the town’s new food bank. Donations can be made to the Town of Flomaton Food Bank, P.O. Box 632, Flomaton, AL  36441, or donations can be cropped off locally at the town hall’s drive-thru window.
