Incumbent District 5 School Board Member Prefiles For Another Term

December 10, 2019

Incumbent Escambia County School Board District 5 member William “Bill” Slayton, Jr. prefiled Monday to seek reelection for the nonpartisan job.

Slayton, a resident of Cantonment, was first elected to the school board in 2008, following an unsuccessful bid for school superintendent in 2004.

You would think a school board member spending his entire career in one of the worst ranked school districts in the state might be embarrassed signing up term after term to run again. But then again why should he? No one challenges him, and he keeps collecting $80k a year for a very part time job, which he is doing terribly. He never even addressed the assault at Tate high school. All the school board members do is “celebrate” the football teams. No one else is running against him, so he may just stroll into the seat again.

It’s time for the old guard to be out and new voices and fresh ideas to be in.

Our schools are failing while those like Mr. Slayton are happy to collect a check and maintain the status quo.

Have anyone been to tate . My poor grandson and all the others students are pack in that school. And teachers are paid so low. We need another high school built in beulah because of how much growth is taking place . All i hear is a new high school is 10 years away when reality 5 years ago should have been built

12 years in a seat and only keeping it warm. There is no visible progress in our school system and it is time for you to go away. Bill, take your 4%/yr elected class FRS retirement and move on. We need new board members with a focus and vision on improving our school district.

Parents, community members, please consider running for this seat! We have one of the the worst school districts in the nation because retired administrators take these seats and never leave. Almost all school board members are retired administrators. We need new ideas!

When my son was at Tate, Mr Slayton never responded to any communications I sent him. He is useless to our district!

He needs to stop bus drivers from losing their jobs because of irregular physicals. Seems some or failed and others pass that have the same situation. Cannot vote for him until the situation is fixed.

Jake, You are right. We need a new voice in this district that is actually familiar with what is really going on in the classrooms in 2019. Not somebody who gets the dog and pony show every time he decides to go to a school.

Here is my concern he been in that seat so long while tate is over population with growth and nothing but crickets from him . We need a new leader to help with this problem and the rest

Trish lay off of him, he found the golden ticket retirement plan. Doesn’t have to do anything and gets that extra pay check.

Somebody needs to ask Mr. Slayton why the taxpayers of Escambia County, and Florida are footing the bill to educate all the Alabama students that flood across the State line every day. Alabama won’t fund their education system adequately,so we are subsidizing them by educating their children. IT NEEDS TO BE STOPPED

FYI, he never answered any of my emails to his address when I inquired about what he (the Board) was planning to do in observation of Constitution Day, September 17! This day is supposed to be honored in EVERY public school by way of teaching students about our most precious Constitution. He will not be getting another vote of mine.
