Highway 4 Bridge Narrowed After Bad Wooden Support Found

December 12, 2019

One lane of a county bridge on Highway 4 has been narrowed after an inspection found a compromised timber support under the bridge.

Wednesday, multiple barrels were placed adjacent to the guardrail on the eastbound side of the Highway 4 bridge over Canoe Creek to prevent drivers from traveling over the bad support.

Escambia County said repair work will begin as soon as possible.

Electronic warning signs have been place on both approaches to the bridge warning of the narrowed bridge and reduced speed limits.

The bridge is located along Highway 4 between Bratt and Byrneville.

Good to see the state is doing their inspections. This bridge has been there a long time and seen a lot of traffic. Time to replace not repair. Of course that will mean using 168 for awhile, traveling from Century to Atmore on 168 is about the same, actuall once you get past 4A it is much straighter and safer.

County road 4 has to be the roughest road in the county and the most traveled in the north end of the county. Those two bridges needs to be replaced and the road needs to be totally resurfaced. We, that have to travel why 4 every day are really tired of the wear and tear on our vehicles.

Every bridge serves something even if you have to use it going and coming.

At least the Bratt road bridge and HWY 168 provide alternate routes.

Not abandoning Roach Road to Pine Barren Road and HWY 164 would have helped too.

    David for options

West Hwy 4 is the HEARTBEAT for this area, one of the most traveled roads and is very vital and important to this area, especially with heavy vehicles (ie: school buses, cotton trucks, log trucks, semi’s and tractor equipment) It also serves as a evacuation route when Hwy 29 closes down due to flooding and it’s the road used for anyone who travels from Century to Atmore and vise versa.

This road needs repaving bad and the old bridges and replaced with modern/updated to code bridges. New painted stripes is not going to help the rough bumpy roads that takes a toll on our vehicles and the drop off on both sides of the road on/off the bridges.

PLEASE EVALUATE THE OVERALL CONDITION OF THIS ROAD AND BRIDGES AND INVEST IN IT’S FUTURE. THIS AREA IS GROWING FAST, WITH NON-STOP TRAFFIC DAILY ! thank you (y)

State built a bridge in the area no more than 5 miles from this site and spent 1 million dollars on it. Oh the bridge serves nothing it’s on a dead end road!!

Remove and replace both of these antediluvian bridges with modern structures and rework the entire stretch of highway 4 from Century to Bratt.
