“Credit to Jay, they showed a lot of character from them because we had just beaten them by 33 last week. They easily could have come in and laid down like hey we are going to lose again, but I thought they fought really hard, and coaches did a really good job,” Northview head coach Derek Marshman said after the win.
Marshman said the Chiefs suffered from turnovers that led to a much closer game this week between the Royals and Chiefs.
“Five turnovers, four in the first half and one in the second half and then really six if you count a pick on a two point conversion. So sloppy from us but our kids were resilient and they fought hard; they battled through the adversity Our first three possessions was three turnovers; our opening kicking and then our next two possessions were three turnovers but our kids are resilient, they battled,” Marshman said. “Different game than last week, it played out differently they made us work a little bit more made us go on drives a little bit. We were able to sustain those and I thought we did a really good job of finishing.”
Junior Jaheem Durant had an offensive touchdown, defensive touchdown and a special teams touchdown to lead Chiefs. Trent Peebles, Jayden Jackson, Mark Findley, and Jaheem Durant had touchdowns for Northview, and Marshman also gave a lot of credit to the D-line.
“The defense played really good ,” he said. “They had a lot of success last week with the pass and Keyshawn Breedlove really stepped up with a big, big game tonight. He ended up with a pick and the defensive line was just great tonight on pass rush, I mean time after time getting to the quarterback, hurrying him, sacking him, forcing fumbles….I thought we did great upfront some success there late against the run. Overall defensive line did a great job.”
The Chiefs (8-2) will travel about 120 miles down the road to Vernon (7-3) next week for the Region 1-1A semifinals.
“It’s going to be a heck of a football game I’m sure,” Marshman said. “It’s going to be a big time challenge for us. We will have to play better. We can’t afford five turnovers next week.”
