UWF Opens New $26 Million Sciences Annex

September 20, 2019

The University of West Florida Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering celebrated the grand opening of the Laboratory Sciences Annex, a state-of-the-art facility that provides additional space for wet teaching labs and offices for faculty and staff.

“As UWF grows and improves, we are grateful to add facilities that match the caliber of our students and faculty,” said UWF President Martha D. Saunders. “The Laboratory Sciences Annex is no exception, with amenities that aid us in graduating the best of the best in STEM-related fields. I would like to thank the Florida State Legislature, especially our local delegation, for their hard work in securing the funding.”

Funded by the Florida State Legislature, the $26.26 million, 52,790 square-foot facility was designed by local architecture firm, Caldwell Associates, with Perkins+Will, a global firm with a specialty in higher education science and technology, and managed by Greenhut Construction Company, Inc. of Pensacola. The annex houses 12 new teaching facilities for the University’s growing biology and chemistry programs and was designed with unfinished “shell” space for potential expansion. These labs along with the new equipment will provide hands-on educational experiences for students.

As of the Fall 2019 semester, approximately 24% of UWF students have declared a major in the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering. Nearly 100% of first time in college students in a Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering major will find themselves in a lab in the new building.

“This new space is nothing short of impressive,” said Dr. Jaromy Kuhl, dean of the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering. “Students are excited knowing they will benefit from learning with new equipment in an environment specifically designed for their studies.”

The facility features new equipment and room for future enhancements for the biology and chemistry departments. One biology lab contains a Biosafety cabinet, an enclosed, ventilated laboratory workspace for students to work safely with materials contaminated or potentially contaminated with pathogens.

“This will allow us to expand the types of experiments we can have students perform,” said Dr. Peter Cavnar, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Biology. “Our goal is to give every biology undergraduate student research experience. The new annex allows us to expand and redevelop that experience for our students.”

MeasureNet stations, located in the annex, will provide students with high-quality data collection technology for their general, analytical and instrumental chemistry lab courses. The stations are equipped with state-of-the-art probes, providing the opportunity to work with diverse samples and experimental techniques, not previously available.

FHP Pursuit Ends With Crash On Highway 29

September 19, 2019

A Florida Highway Patrol pursuit ended with a vehicle crash on Pensacola Boulevard at W Street Thursday afternoon.

The pursuit reportedly began when FHP tried to stop a vehicle believed to be driven by a man wanted by troopers for a chase Wednesday night in Pensacola.

Wesley Batch, age of 24 of Pensacola, fled, with the pursuit continuing down Nine Mile Road and onto Pensacola Boulevard. Batch crashed his car into another car at the intersection with W Street, and several vehicles were damaged in the parking lot of the Kia dealership.

Batch was transported to the hospital with minor injuries after resisting and being bitten by a law enforcement K-9. He was charged with aggravated fleeing with injury, resisting and reckless driving. He was released from jail on a $15,000 bond.

The driver of the second car, 28-year old Rachel Compton of Pensacola, suffered only minor injuries.

The FHP says Batch was not the man they were attempting to locate; they are not sure why he fled.

Escambia Man Pleads Guilty To Trying To Sell Equipment To Iran

September 19, 2019

An Escambia County man has pleaded guilty to conspiring with foreign nationals to ship technology to Iran.

James P. Meharg, 59, pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiring to sell and export power generating equipment to a recipient in Iran as well as making false statements on export documents and international money laundering. Meharg, CEO and president of Turbine Resources International, LLC, located in Pensacola, conspired with citizens of the United Kingdom and Iran to export a large turbine and parts from the United States to an Iranian recipient, in violation of the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations as well as federal criminal law.

According to the indictment, Meharg, a citizen of the United States, conspired from October 1, 2017, to June 12, 2019, to violate the embargo by attempting to export a Solar Mars 90 S turbine core engine and parts from the United States, for delivery to an end user in Iran. On April 25, 2018, the indictment alleges, Meharg sent an invoice for $500,000 to a conspirator in the United Kingdom and received two partial payments of $124,950 each, on May 7 and May 24, 2018, at least one of which was routed through a company in Dubai.

Meharg, a local U.S. citizen, admitted that he conspired from October 1, 2017, to June 12, 2019, to violate the Iranian embargo by attempting to export a Solar Mars 90 S turbine core engine and parts from the United States, for delivery to an end user in Iran. Evidence revealed that on April 25, 2018, Meharg sent an invoice for $500,000 to a conspirator in the United Kingdom and received two partial payments of $124,950 each, on May 7 and May 24, 2018, which were routed through a company in the United Arab Emirates. In total, Meharg received approximately $250,000 in funds laundered through foreign accounts as payment for having the turbine sent to Iran. Law enforcement authorities, however, were able to seize the turbine before its transatlantic journey to the end user in Iran. That end user, a conspirator in Iran, is linked to an Iranian oil, gas, and petrochemical company. Meharg also admitted to falsifying documents used to export items from the Pensacola area.

“Exporting technology to Iran is prohibited for a very good reason, and this defendant chose to put his own self-interest above the national security needs of the United States of America,” Keefe said. “This case should send a clear signal that the United States cannot and will not look the other way when one of its citizens endangers the safety of our nation and its people.”

Assistant United States Attorney David L. Goldberg, who is a National Security Cyber Specialist, is prosecuting the case following a joint investigation by the United States Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Meharg faces up to five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy charges related to violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, up to 5 years’ imprisonment for falsifying export documents, and up to 20 years’ imprisonment for international money laundering. A sentencing date has been set for December 12 at the United States Courthouse in Pensacola.
