Century To Hire City Manager, Names Buz Eddy As Interim
September 10, 2019
The Century Town Council Monday night voted to a hire a town manager to run daily operations, but just how far reaching the person’s authority will be remains to be seen. The council also voted to name Buz Eddy as interim town manager until a permanent hire is made.
“I think it is absolutely necessary that y’all do this,” Eddy told the council. “I think the number of things I’ve had an opportunity to work on would just be the tip of the iceberg for someone that would actually apply for and be appointed to this position.”
Eddy told NorthEscambia.com that he does not plan to apply for the job.
He said the new city manager should be able to understand “issues very close to the operation of the town, will get to understand city facilities, city finances, making plans for the future.” He said he believes a qualified candidate would be familiar with the issues raised during a grand jury investigation earlier this year, as well as a consultant’s report on town shortcomings.
The mayor and council will decide exactly what duties the city manager will have, a job description will be created, and the position will be advertised. The resolution adopted Monday night directs town staff to prepare the official job description and begin the search.
According to the ordinance, the town’s charter allows the council to create or establish departments as deemed necessary and the mayor to hire employees with the council’s approval.
Eddy’s new title of interim city manager will be the same independent contractor basis that he he’s worked under since July 29. In August, the council authorized up to $5,000 to pay him at $35 an hour for his services.
Eddy is former city manager of Gulf Breeze from 1992-2017.

Hire another to do the job of the already employed? Shouldn’t he take the place of the one that is failing instead of just adding to the bill that is already there?
Here is the problem “The mayor and council will decide exactly what duties the city manager will have”. The mayor and council cant figure their own role.
Let the corruption begin!!!
This could be a step in the right direction.
As long as the candidate does not currently work for the city.
Let’s see, I guess Eddy would “think it’s absolutely necessary that y’all do this” , especially since they are going to pay him $35 per hour to do it. What “it” is is the question. He has no job description, no authority, no duties. The charter still has the Mayor as the administrative head of all employees, which would also include contract employees. I think that it amounts to just adding another layer of smoke into the mix to cloud up what is really going on.
I never stopped getting a gas and water bill.It should be made public everyone that continues to steal gas and water.
While understanding the post, who else but the duly elected representatives of the Town of Century to set the scope of work?
“The mayor and council will decide exactly what duties the city manager will have,” that’s defined as a shill, or a puppet.
good news
So, you have a mayor, and a council, who cannot seem to get anything positive accomplished. Yet a broke town has to hire a manger? What a laughingstock.
It’s a nothing job no power to do anything that’s the mayor job fine where 3 million in general fund when and 1.5 million in gas fund when 25 different checking accounts what going on with that wake up everyone raises taxes to cover that its serious whem
To those who apply (volunteer as tribute)…may the odds be ever in your favor.
Wonder which good ole boy is in line for this job?
town manager = puppet
So..the town is dog broke…but you told the man you would give him an iou for 5k buck’s for his services….amazing…but the perk is…he can get free gas in trade
The ball is in your court sir. It’s time to make a difference in this town.
LET THE GAMES COMMENCE!!!!!!
I think Century may be starting to see the light. They needed to do this a long time ago.
If the new town manager is given no authority, he will be unable to address Century’s problems, but he will give the elected officials someone to blame for their own incompetence and malfeasance.
lol, we can’t afford to pay ANYONE. oh, that’s right we’re gonna tax the people. that seems hard to do when only a few pay their utility bills.
Its obvious that changes need to be made. Hiring someone to take care of the day to day operations is great. But, it will not make one bit of difference who they hire or what the job description is, if the council and mayor do not give this person the authority to take corrective action (if every change has to be brought to the mayor and council for approval which I suspect will be the case) then the new position will be just another waste of money.
Good ol Buzz, still feeding at the public trough and Century is will to oblige.
