Inmate Airlifted To The Hospital After Stabbing At Century Prison

July 30, 2019

A Century Correctional Institution inmate was airlifted to the hospital after being stabbed Monday afternoon.

Florida Department of Corrections Press Secretary Rob Klepper told NorthEscambia.com that he could confirm that it was an inmate that was stabbed, not a staff member. Late Monday afternoon he said additional details were not yet available from FDC.

Escambia County Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS were dispatched to the prison on Tedder Road at 2:27 p.m., according to a county spokesperson. The prisoner was airlifted by LifeFlight helicopter  as a trauma alert.

    Hey All,

I have a brother incarcerated at CCI. He was framed for a crime he didn’t commit… I know what some of you are thinking, “Yeah, right, that’s what they all say.” Well, think what you will about any of the inmates. They are still human beings created in the image and likeness of our Creator and Lord Jesus Christ.

I don’t have any details, but the inmate was stabbed in the face and later died from his injuries. The prisoners there have squalid living arrangements. They get scrapes of old uniforms to wear. They barely have enough food to sustain life. They have no environmental controls in their cells or pods. They get heat rash in the summer, freeze in the winter. If their shoes get holes, their feet get wet…no replacements. They have nothing to do for days on end. They are sleep deprived and afraid to close their eyes when they have the opportunities. Can any of you really be so heartless to deprive people of their basic human rights?

Our prisons need help. Our prisoners need help. There should be rehabilitation centers for addicts. Education for the underprivileged. Nursing homes for the aged. And work for the able-bodied. Helpful training to keep these guys from becoming repeat offenders and for those that are not able to be rehabilitated, swift and just punishment

Our prisons are dirty, undermanned, and unsafe for both the security guards and the prisoners. Neither population are disposable – both need justice, help, care, and respect. Mutual respect goes a long way with most people.

My two cents…along with prayers for the many families destroyed by our current prison problems.

    @Mike
DOC is not funded by the Federal government it is funded by the state. Just because we do not pay state income tax does not mean we don’t pay taxes. Every time you buy something at the store you pay taxes and the state collects billions in other ways as well.

Inmates are human. Most of you do not have a problem with a spending tax dollars to rescue an animal. Some inmates provide basically free labor for the state. Senators and Representatives get free medical care and money for doing nothing.
Individuals and businesses profit off of inmates. Ask those who profit off of inmates to pick up the tab. Inmates are human being too!

It is such a sad state of affairs when an inmate gets to ride the helicopter free of charge and a tax paying citizen is charged $50,000.00+ to ride . I KNOW because I am that tax paying citizen. Oh yea, I have health insurance, but it only paid somewhere around $6,000,00 on the bill. Guess who gets left with the remaining balance to be paid. You guessed it, ME!! So I send them a few bucks every month and will be paying on this debt until I am old and gray. Where in the scheme of things is this right?

Is it true that if you’re a prisoner you can’t have health insurance? Just askin for a friend

Bob C, in addition to the many necessary costs you mentioned for a hospitalized inmate, there is also the additional overtime cost for 2 guards, who usually sleep on and off during their 12 hour night shift. As a nurse, it was funny to walk in a room and see everybody sleeping!

    Bob C,
Someone with no insurance may consider it good.

    Bob C.

You clearly have never been incarcerated because there is NO such thing as good healthcare in jails and prisons.

The doc budget is funded by the federal government. Florida has no state tax so us tax payers don’t directly pay for their so called comfort. The annual budget for fdoc is 2.4 billion dollars per year and a most of it is for security.

When they fight, we the tax payer pays their life flight ride to a Pensacola hospital. Too bad the Century Clinic can’t take care of their problem. Or go to Atmore.

HUGE part of the budgets go to pay for Medical Care of Inmates.
That includes doctors, nurses, attendants, other caretakers.
Hospital care in the institution or a hospital, ambulance services, phys therapy, psychological help, counseling, etc.
Many Many inmates come into the jails and prisons with varying degrees of medical needs, drug dependency, serious life threatening diseases and illnesses such as cancers or HIV, etc.
Yes, We the Taxpayers do indeed pay the costs for these and many other types of medical and health care services to incarcerated individuals.
Yes, there are those who are quite ill and will commit a crime in order to be placed into confinement so they can have good and free health care.
