ECSO: Cantonment Man Hit Neighbor With Shovel In Fence Dispute

July 8, 2019

An dispute between Cantonment neighbors over a fence landed one of them in jail on a felony charge.

Starford Lee Jones, 75, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after allegedly striking his neighbor with a shovel.

The victim told deputies that he was preparing to work on the fence when Jones ran toward him with a shovel in his hand yelling “get away from the fence”. Jones then hit the fence with the shovel before hitting the victim in his upper arm and lower leg, according to arrest report. Deputies documented a small scratch on the victim’s lower leg.

A witness provided deputies with a cell phone video of the incident. Deputies were able to see Jones swing the shovel toward the victim and hit the fence, but they were unable to tell what happened in the physical altercation due to the cell phone video shaking.

Jones stated he saw the victim at the fence, ran toward him with the shovel and hit the fence with the shovel to scare him away, the report states. Jones said the victim hit him and knocked him to the ground.

Jones was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $2,500 bond.

If the courts have handled this, Mr. Jones needs to move his fence onto his own property solves the problem. The victim may be able to sue Mr. Jones for the cost of property it sits on. You need to talk to a land attorney. I am not legal educated, this is my opinion.

Speak facts, first of all Mr. Jones fence is on the neighbor property, this has been an ongoing dispute that the courts have handled, Jones is just mad because he has to pay for his fence being on the neighbor property. COME ON BIG MONEY JONES, move your fence off the neighbor property, you don’t own everything hahaha

When people ask you to leave them alone Believe it, you may not like them and they may not like you,but it doesn’t give others the right to do as they please to a persons property ,vandalize, trespass etc. People Stay in your lane….Stop Throwing Rocks and hide your hand. This man should not have went to jail out of frustration….Good Luck to you Sir….

Well there is a problem here that they need to work out. That no reason to come swing a shovel at some one just because he’s old he’s lucky that it wasn’t someone that carry’s a gun or for that matter didn’t grab something swing back for the man that had the shovel ur neighbors is not worth going to jail for I had and issues with a neighbor before had words with him I just call the law hope y’all get it work out

Seems like an ongoing dispute between the neighbors and a “staged” altercation. It’s not normal for anyone to work in the yard and have someone taping the activities.

Two thoughts here….instead of taking pictures, why not help prevent the situation. Secondly don’t mess with us seniors….we’re already pissed about being old.
