Century Still Seeking Charter Review Committee Applicants; Little Interest So Far

July 5, 2019

The Town of Century is continuing to accept applicants for a Charter Review Committee, but so far they’ve had little interest expressed by local residents.

Applicants must reside within the town limits and submit an application by 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 25. As of early this week, only two applications had been received.

If the town council goes forward, the committee will explore the town charter — the document that establishes the town, outlines its powers and spells out how it should operate. The current Century charter has not been updated in almost 40 years.

The town council held a workshop in May with Lynn Tipton of the Florida League of Cities explained to the council that municipal governments in Florida often review and update their charters to meet the ever-changing landscape of government.

The Century town charter was adopted on November 27, 1979, and ratified by referendum on January 8, 1980. It has been unchanged since.

Tipton said the first step toward possible changes to Century’s charter would be the formation of a charter revision committee. The committee would hold several public forums and would work to involve local citizens every step of the way in a process that could easily take a year.

“The role of citizens in this process is crucial,” Tipton said.” Representation of the public, ability to weigh issues and to understand the charter’s importance of the city’s governing foundation.”

The number of council members, the length of their terms and how the mayor is selected could all be changed through an updated charter.

    Hi question,

I think we’re on separate pages. Speaking for myself, I don’t receive services from Century. I moved to the area a few months ago. I do have a Century mailing address and a sincere concern about the wellbeing of this area.

I believe there are individuals around with experiences and backgrounds that could provide competent input and care enough to want to do so. If for no other reason than to be part of an effort to better their community and the challenge it would bring.

Work was done to seek individuals for this charter review challenge. If a search inside the limits isn’t fruitful, and a charter review committee is a desire from the town, then expand the search.

changing the charter will not repay the misappropriated funds to the tune of 3 million

changing the charter will not make any of the elected people or staff any more competent

changing the charter will not make the accountant do his job and to continue to allow more than half of the people receiving services and not being billed to be remedied

changing the charter can let the self serving peeps with their hands in the cookie jar pay themselves more, raise the thresh hold for millage, and raise the limit for a strong mayor

changing the charter will not change the fact that Mike Hill will not intervene, nor the SAO, nor the Governor IG

changing the charter will not compel anyone to get the the bottom of the shenanigans involving one lumber road.

water from a water board and ECUA..what’s wrong with that scenario

hopefully Warren Averitt earn their 30K and soon the last domino falls

    If not..then wth…house for sale..

    @Cantonment MLK..what—

like *THEY* they have *ALLOWED* a huge surge in more registered Democratic voter to flood the precinct in a very short period of time–.anyone notice that?

Other people outside boundary receiving services asking for representation–why didn’t you ask to annex?

Why is this the only recommendation being acted upon? It is probably best left alone because this present council most likely will not opt for manager/council

    Three choices
    1 #bailfaster
    2 #paddleharder
    3 #swimfortheshore

They should allow persons from outside century to apply. I’m sure there’s plenty of armchair lawyers who would love to contribute.

  6. MLK on July 5th, 2019 9:13 pm

Maybe allow those just outside the town limits to contribute. Some of have a vested interest in the success of the area.

  7. question on July 5th, 2019 6:30 pm

Is it legal for them to ask for AGE RACE and SEX on this application?

  8. BIG JOHN on July 5th, 2019 4:55 pm

YES WHO WOULD JUMP INTO A PIT OF SNAKES, OR GO DOWN ON A SINKING SHIP. (LIKE THE TOWN OF CENTURY) OR GO THE JAIL!!! YES THAT IS WHY THERE IS LITTLE INTEREST… OR MAYBE THEY WOULD SAY , WHY TRY TO UPDATE THE CHARTER IT WILL BE THE SAME OLD THING NOTHING WILL CHANGE!!! ON TILL THE RATS ARE OUT OF THERE

@metoo: not my town or township. Let it sink, dissolve it, and launch a criminal investigation into the current administration. Seems to be plenty of space on the stool of do-nothing that you are sitting on.

    REGARDING:
“why aren’t any of the commentors and facebook warriors stepping up to help make some changes. ”

Most are also not citizens of Century.

    David for Bluff Springs
where dozens live as billions wish they could

I do not live on Century but I do know it’s a mess. But why are’nt any of the commentors and facebook warriors stepping up to help make some changes. This is your chance to act. Don’t just talk about it, be about it. Your township is sinking and no. help is in the way. Do you grab a bucket to bail water or sit on it and watch?

    @ tg

My thoughts exactly. Getting into anything with the current ‘operators’ of the Town of Century is like asking to be indicted by a Grand Jury.

    NOPE…..not us. Let it roll.

    desolve the charter

  14. Chris on July 5th, 2019 7:36 am

Of course there is little interest. Who wants to stick their hand into a pit of vipers?

  15. tg on July 5th, 2019 6:38 am

Little interest of course who wants to jump into a hot frying pan.
