Cantonment Woman Seriously Injured In Highway 297A Crash

June 28, 2019

A Cantonment woman was seriously injured in a crash Thursday night on Highway 297A at South Highway 97.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 21-year old Summer Hills of Cantonment was northbound on Highway 297A in a Nissan Rogue when she attempted to turn onto County Road 97 and traveled into the path of a Ford F250 driven by William Rollo, 21, of Daphne, Alabama.

Hills was transported by Escambia County EMS to Sacred Heart Hospital in serious condition. Rollo was not injured, but his passenger, 23-year old Donald Johnson of Cantonment, suffered minor injuries and was taken to West Florida Hospital.

Hills was cited for failing to yield right of way to an approaching vehicle while making a left turn.

Summer Hills is my baby cousin. Accidents happen and thankfully she is ALIVE. She’s had two surgeries and is finally out of ICU. While everyone’s concerns about speeding and everything are making a great point, I can assure you that Summer doesn’t drive irresponsibly. She made poor judgement on a turn and the accident happened. Thank you to everyone for the prayers for her. She is expected to make a full recovery!!!

Prayers for Summer to make a speedy recovery and prayers for her family also.

I believe if they park an unmarked police vehicle on that corner they could issue lots of citations. I travel that intersection twice a day and I cannot believe what people will do. The other day I was slowing down to make that turn with my turn signal on and had to stop for someone coming southbound. The idiot coming up behind me went around me and crossed in front of the vehicle coming south. The idiot blared his horn and flipped me off. Could have been real nasty if the person coming south was going a little faster. Slow down folks it’s not worth your life.

I live in the area. One must take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY when approaching that intersection at ALL TIMES! For starters, you have to slow down and be alert. No distractions. It is only going to.get worse with all of the constant housing comstruction in the area.

This could be avoided if people would slow down and obey the rules you learned when you learned to drive. I go that way daily and always have two or three cars turn left in front of me. Make it a three way stop or put a light up.

Here is a tissue Michelle..geeze!!! Ignorance for blaming a company for bringing jobs, money and positive programs to our county. 297A has been a busy road long before Navy Federal came along. IGNORANT!

The problem is not the lights or the roads. People have been traveling these for years with no problems. The problem is people are more distracted these days and are not paying attention. Please improve your driving habits! There are lives at stake.

Get ready to see more of this as the housing continues to grow north on 97 and 297A. That intersection is dangerous partly due to its design, but mostly due to people who aren’t paying attention to oncoming traffic. It’s not unusual to see near misses daily from cars turning in front of others, people who can’t come to a full stop to LOOK at what’s coming, and people who just pull out in front of traffic and think it’s their road. Sorry folks but a dump truck running that turn @45mph can’t stop if you pull out 30ft. in front of him(see it all the time) be prepared to get a little shove from behind! Troopers and ECSD Tahoe’s could pay extra officers just on citations written at this one spot!

A left turn lane is needed northbound at this intersection.

Please people just slow down..everytime I drive that way I am frightened by all the cars flying around there,….I pray Summer makes a full recovery……….

That spot is bad since they put the light in at kingsfield there.. plus now all the traffic from the new subdivisions going in will make this area even worse.. traffic backs up to turn onto 97 from 297A and it is only going to get worse.. heaven help us all when all those people move out here for navy federal..

I hope & pray that every one involved is ok!
The road has been widened but there
continues to be wrecks at this intersection.
    What else can be done?
