ECSO: Suspect Shoved Deputy, Ran Out Of His Shoes During Cottage Hill Foot Chase

May 30, 2019

Deputies say a Cantonment man literally ran out of his shoes while being chased by deputies in Cottage Hill, and he is also accused of shoving a deputy.

Cody Brooks Holland, 22, was charged with felony battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

An Escambia County deputy was on patrol on Williams Ditch Road  when he observed two males sitting on top of a rock in front of the Cottage Hill Baptist Church. They told him they were just waiting for a ride. When the deputy ran a radio check on Holland, he was informed he had an outstanding failure to appear warrant.

When the deputy proceeded to handcuff Holland, he asked to hug his friend and proceeded to do so without waiting for answer, an arrest report states.

When the deputy attempted to handcuff him, he pushed his friend and deputy away, according to the report. The deputy gave chase as Holland ran eastbound on Williams Ditch Road.

After repeated warnings during the chase, the deputy fired his taser at Holland but missed. The deputy tripped and fell on the taser wires, suffering an abrasion to his elbow. He observed Holland run behind a home on Williams Ditch Road.

A perimeter was established, and an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit arrived to assist in the search. Holland literally ran out of his shoes, which were located on Williams Ditch Road, according to the ECSO.

When Holland was located, he claimed he did feel a taser probe behind his leg. Escambia Fire Rescue responded, but he refused medical treatment.

In a black bookbag that had allegedly been in Holland’s possession, deputies reported finding a broken glass pipe, three baggies of suspected spice and Holland’s identification.

Holland remained in the Escambia County Jail Thursday morning.
