This was my friend who was killed
He always went to the gym around 12 or 1am and csme back at about 5am. The bike ride was part of his workout. I know for a fact that his bike was decked out with awesome lights as he was very aware how important it is to be seen. I’m sure this would never have happened had the driver not been drunk.

I live fairly near Ashland – people in this area seem to want to be hit – in the road – dark clothes and not caring about moving out of the way. No – I do not condone DUI. People also need to act responsibly – in vehicles, walking, riding a bike, pushing a baby stroller.

Cell phones are the cause of more highway deaths now than DUIs. Accidents while texting are just as preventable as DUI. Everone needs to think about that when they are pointing fingers. I was hit on my motorcycle in 2009. She was not drinking she was talking on a cell phone. I was almost killed and she got a $250 fine for running a red light. This was not late at night on a dark road this happened at 4:30pm on a sunny day.

I KNOW THIS YOUNG MAN AND GREW UP WITH HIM AND HE HAS A GREAT FAMILY AND HE IS A GREAT PERSON AND WOULD NEVER HURT ANYONE. I HAVE ALMOST HIT A PERSON ON A BIKE MYSELF AND WASNT DRINKING AND I DONT THINK THEY SHOULD BE RIDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. I AM SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF THE FAMILY AND I AM PRAYING FOR BOTH ….

So sorry for the loss of life on this incident. One night, after leaving a nearby store, my headlights barely caught an adult male STANDING IN THE MIDDLE of Detroit Blvd. a few streets down from Ashland. He was in dark clothing and just stood there. My daughter, who was in her car right behind me, didn’t know why I slammed on my brakes until she saw him as he slowly walked across the lane when an oncoming car appeared. It was scary and dangerous yet I would have been at fault for hitting a pedestrian. I’m so thankful I saw him and no other cars were close. An intoxicated driver probably would not have seen him at all.

If he was not drunk , he wouldn’t be charged.
Think about that next time your grand kids are out on their bikes

If McGhee wasnt drunk perhaps he could have avoided the accident. Lock him up.

Firewater and iron horse a deadly combination.

A bicyclist riding down the middle of the road at night would be hard for anybody to avoid. Even wearing beer goggles – him in heap big trouble

M in Bratt, he was supposed to be drunk, what is so hard to understand? Yes, both are at fault. He shouldn’t have been driving. If he was sober he might could’ve avoided it. It’s sad that one lost their life and this has damaged family of both people and I hope he he cleans himself up and never drinks anything else again or do drugs. May God be with him and others involved. I hope you don’t drive while under the influence of alcohol or any drugs. If you drink or do drugs, please quit for you and your loved ones.

M in Bratt – Just because he was dui doesn’t mean he was at fault for the wreck. A bicyclist riding down the middle of the road at night would be hard for anybody to avoid.

Exactly. I don’t drink alcohol and it would be hard for me to see a cyclist in the MIDDLE of the road at night.

Curious Waste…but how did you determine the cyclist was irresponsible? Florida Law provides that a cyclist is entitled to take a lane of traffic when necessary. Motorists are supposed to leave a minimum of 3 feet of space when passing a cyclist. I’d say the irresponsible part, was the Drunk Driver.

@TJ: The District Attorney’s office will review the State Trooper’s Accident Report when it is complete and decide if additional charges are necessary.

Look for an update to this story in a couple of days after the District Attorney has had time to make the review.

I am expecting more charges to be filed.

Two families lives now forever changed. One irresponsible for riding in the road is now dead. One who didn’t see him/her kills them while driving under the influence of alcohol now has to face his crime and the fact that his actions took another persons life. The situation was avoidable by both but it wasn’t. Prayers to both families who have to suffer through this.

DUI that’s all? What about vehicular homicide?
