Woman Charged In Fatal DUI Crash

April 22, 2019

An Escambia County woman was charged with DUI after a fatal crash Sunday afternoon.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 47-year old Marie Ann Simpkins failed to stop her Hyundai Sonata at a red traffic signal at Fairfield Drive and W Street about 4:30 p.m. and collided with two other vehicles. Her vehicle collided with a 2003 Ford Mustang drive by 49-year old Randy Riley. Riley was critically injured, while the crash claimed the life of his passenger, 22-year old Nelson Riley of Pensacola.

Simpkins’ vehicle also hit a Nissan Murano drive by Gladys Taylor, who suffered minor injuries.

Two passengers in Simpkins’ car, 19-year old Jobe Simpkins and a 4-year old, were also transported to the hospital.

Simpkins was charged with vehicular manslaughter, DUI manslaughter, DUI with serious bodily injury and reckless driving. She was booked into the Escambia Jail late Sunday night without bond.

This is very sad. You took some one son and hurt others. Now his father has passed away because of injuries sustained from accident. So you took 2 lives when you could have asked someone to drive you or simply not got under the wheel. Prayers for this father and son family

I knew Marie personally and true enough she had her thing but its not what everyone thinks and bo she should not have been driving. But she had a heart of gold and me knowing her. She is full of remorse and I know she’s not just crying for herself. I pray for everyone in this case especially for the lives lost. I hate these circumstances happened and I pray whole heartedly for everyone involved and connected. I wish I could turn back the hands of time.

  8. Tammy on April 22nd, 2019 6:18 pm

My heart breaks for this family, and I don’t understand why these people don’t use yellow taxi, Uber etc. so this woman chose to drive drunk, and I’m sure she’s going to cry tomorrow at court case and “say I have children” she better think what she did to that mother who lost her child. That family lives have change forever.

Driving Under the Influence and hurt or kill someone should be treated the same as premeditated murder. You make a Choice to drive under the influence, so it should have very harsh consequences. You know what? So should the people who are sober. If you don’t stop for stop signs or red lights and kill someone you should go to prison for you Choice to break the Law. Speeding, passing on double lines, distracted driving, etc. Anytime you deliberately break the Law by Choice and hurt or kill someone you should go to prison.

hey leg mj, nowhere in the story does it say she was under the influence of alcohol.
she may have been , but then again people under the influence of pot are also very dangerous. substituting one for the other makes no sense. both need to be gotten rid of.

“Legalize Marijuana on April 22nd, 2019 8:41 am

Alcohol is legal yet marijuana is not. Should be the other way around. You don’t hear or see sad things like this if someone drivrs after smoking a lil bud. Yet daily many die at the hands of a drunk driver. SMH”

That is the most IDIOTIC thing someone can say, honestly. Regardless what the ingested item is, it ALL affects the skills and abilities to safely operate a motor vehicle on the roadways. For anyone to think that someone smoking marijuana would be a safer driver compared to someone drink beer or popping pills, shows the mentality of a 3rd grader. Anything that is put into your body, in any way, which affects your fine motor skills and impares your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle is illegal and deadly.

I can’t bring myself to pray for a drunk. The families involved will suffer their losses for the rest of their lives. We all have problems and know we can’t solve them drinking and driving. Drunks know this too.

  14. Marie on April 22nd, 2019 10:54 am

You should not be behind the wheel with anything in your system. Drugs pot booze it is all under the influence. You need to walk if you want to party. At least you won’t be taking an innocent life. Sad and this is happening more and more . Prayers to this person who lost their loved one.

  15. U right on April 22nd, 2019 10:37 am

    Correct:

@ ‘wonka….. You are absolutely correct. Drunks do kill more people than guns. Guns don’t kill. People kill people. Got a house full of guns, they never killed anyone.

She needs to be charged with child neglect as well for the two that were in her vehicle…..damn drunks

    re:Williwonka
The way our criminal court system works is that the charge of a crime is put on the defendant. The Prosecution has to be able to prove that the defendant is guilty and did with intent the thing that lead to the charge/s.
If this person was charged with 1st Degree Murder the prosecution would need to be able to prove to the court that the defendant with malice and forethought intended to kill the person that got killed. If the prosecution couldn’t make that case, this person would be declared not guilty of the crime of 1st Degree Murder.
It would be impossible, I think, for the prosecution to prove that there was any intent to do harm much less murder so the person gets charged with something lesser that can be successfully prosecuted.
If you want to change something you could try to get a law made that anyone caught driving drunk gets Life in prison or the death penalty. That would likely have an impact on keeping problems like this from occurring. While we are at it, we could also make smoking cigarettes in public a capital offense with a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison for anyone caught smoking in public or within 500 feet of anyone trying to breath fresh air.

As with all drunk drivers who kill innocent people, Not even a scratch on their body. It is so rare that these drunks do run into a concrete utility pole or a fully loaded rear end of a dump truck and kill themselves. They always seem to find the innocent family trying to enjoy a drive on a beautiful day. My sympathies to the families of the victims. As for the drunk I hope you rot in prison.

  23. Michelle Cranford on April 22nd, 2019 8:17 am

If you don’t value your life enough to drive responsiblity and be sober, then think of the love ones in the car with you or the other drivers on the road. When you drive under the influence you are driving a loaded weapon. Several lives will now be changed forever because of her selfish and thoughless decision.
