Mother Charged With Manslaughter After Toddler Found Dead In Vehicle

April 11, 2019

An Escambia County mother has been charged with the death of her 2-year old.

Jessica Lynn Monell, 36, is charged with negligent manslaughter, child neglect, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was being held without bond.

Her two-year old child was found dead Wednesday afternoon inside a van at the Aqua Porta Apartments on Meadson Road in southern Escambia County.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Aqua Porta Apartments on Meadson Road just before 4 p.m. where they found that the child had been left inside a vehicle. Maj. Andrew Hobbs of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said the child was left in the vehicle for about eight hours.

Monell allegedly forgot the child was in the vehicle and went inside to sleep.

Hobbs said crystal methamphetamine and prescription narcotics without a valid prescription were found inside the apartment.

The investigation into the death is continuing by the Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office.

A record high of 88 was set on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Rasheed, you might want to have a lawyer to explain to you the definition of murder

  2. BRING IT ON on April 13th, 2019 11:50 am

The punishment should fit the crime. Eight hours in a sweltering car should do nicely. This woman and the many others who have committed this crime deserve nothing less.

Alex i think dopers are adicted.

  4. ALEX on April 12th, 2019 11:38 am

do you mean it is ok to let dopers have children, just not addicts.

  5. Brenda on April 12th, 2019 11:26 am

They need to lock her up for 8 hours have her strap in the car so she can’t get out nothing to eat or drink.

  6. tg on April 12th, 2019 8:24 am

There are different degrees of murder. First degree usually means there was intent and a premeditated plan. Second degree is killing someone without a premeditated plan, or advanced planning. This is usually heat of the moment type of crime where you meant to hurt someone but your actions lead to their death. After second degree you usually have manslaughter, which is from a reckless act or criminal negligence. In this case this woman was criminally negligent.
Isn’t the internet great? it makes lawyers out of all of us. Like I tell Mrs. Jazreel, the mother of most of children and my wife of 40 + years, no need to argue when you can “Google”.

  8. Williwonka on April 12th, 2019 4:42 am

She should have been charged with murder not manslaughter. She is an evil person.

I am angry at the death of this innocent child. As a parent, I knew where my child was and with who 24/7. I can’t comprehend “forgetting” your child. Ever.
That being said, many have called for a murder charge. Had the “mother” been charged with murder, she would have been acquitted. For a murder charge, the prosecutor must prove intent. There was no intent here, just pure negligence. I pray she is found guilty and sentenced to the maximum of the law. For those that say “she will suffer for the rest of her days” – do not assume this woman has a conscience. She clearly does not.

  10. Do you believe??? on April 11th, 2019 8:52 pm

Our Lord works in mysterious ways. If you are a believer you know that this child was taken because it was God’s Will. As for the Mother; if you truly believe you know that she is forgiven, because Jesus died for all of our sins. Don’t cast judgement, just pray.

I don’t personally know this person, nor do I care to. However, those of you that do, I can’t believe your actually defending her? I understand forgetting your phone, your purse, your groceries ect. But your child?? I can not wrap my
Head around how you can leave your child for 8 hours in a car and not at any time think “hey wonder where or what my 2yr old is doing? Two year olds don’t stay silent for 8 hours at a time! I have had four children and your lucky to get a one hour nap out of them. You can blame it on the drugs or whatever but 8 hours is a long amount of time to FORGET You had a child! I bet she knew where her phone was during those 8 hours…

Steph and Bowhunter……..agree wholeheartedly!!!! She selfishly chose drugs over her child and proudly,I am a Right to Lifer!!!!!!!! Stop killing babies and start taking responsibilties seriously!!!!!!!!

  13. JJBrand on April 11th, 2019 6:17 pm

You deserve the death penalty. For all of those out there who feel drugs don’t kill, here’s another example.

  14. Nod on April 11th, 2019 5:34 pm

If things get hard just use drugs and say I forgot I had a child and left it in the car. So easy.

  15. ROBERT on April 11th, 2019 5:19 pm

Another life lost due to drugs…too bad it wasn’t the user and not this poor baby. The mother chose to get drugged up and neglect her child…She deserves every drop of shame and pain she feels now..if she even feels any. Bottom line is she caused that babys death and deserves a harsh sentence.

  16. Mimi on April 11th, 2019 3:09 pm

So very very sad! Breaks my heart!

  17. D on April 11th, 2019 3:09 pm

Shouldn’t be judging her? Why not? It was her job to take care of that child regardless of her drug habits. Normally when you have a child your habits should stop and the child becomes your habit. In this case she failed at both. She failed her child an failed at life….. Kudos to her.

  18. anne 1of2 on April 11th, 2019 1:16 pm

You folks condemning the mother are the same ones insisting abortion is wrong and every child has a right to life. Does anyone out there understand these women may never be good mothers? Where is the father of the child? He isn’t being blamed, he just walked away. Was anyone helping this woman or did she turn to drugs, trying to cope? Only the Lord can help this woman,

  19. Steph on April 11th, 2019 12:56 pm

To momma…..you are dead wrong! As moms we may forget to pick up something from the store, a doctor’s appointment, etc. It takes a sorry person to use drugs in the presence of their own children and then to totally neglect and forget about them all day. This woman should never be allowed to be alone with a child again. What has happened to our values. Something needs to be done about all of the parents that fail to provide and care for their own kids.

    @ a momma / I’m a Dad / Are You For Real

  21. A momma on April 11th, 2019 12:21 pm

Many things to say but the only ones I will voice now is Timothy, Doris and Howie y’all shouldn’t be judging her. Yes she’s done wrong and if she has any feelings i gotta think she suffering more now and will in the future without her baby than being locked up. We all fail everyday, we might fail in an area where she was the best. No one but her knows what happened and why. None of us know her heart or mind. Howie how do you shes know Satans servant? Theres more people that could be blamed than just the drug user or alcoholic, but no one wants to accept accountability or responsibility.

  22. mat on April 11th, 2019 11:59 am

Maybe part of her sentence should be served sitting in a hot car for 8 hours.

  23. Henry on April 11th, 2019 11:50 am

    re:Doris,
To have a charge of murder the prosecution would have to be able to prove that she intended to kill her child.
As far as her being punished, she will live with the punishment and guilt 24/7/365 for the rest of her life.
I’m not sure what her judicial punishment should be but I don’t think she is a threat to society. Clearly she has addiction problems. I guess the question is with her addiction/s was she in control? Did she intend to neglect her child?
I get the anger over the child’s death but the Law and the Court don’t operate based on feelings or emotion.
There could a lot of extenuating circumstances that led her down the road to her addiction/s? i.e. living with abuse or being a rape survivor or etc. etc. That wouldn’t make anything about what happened ok but it might put what happened in a context that matters for this very sad and stupid situation.

  24. TJ on April 11th, 2019 11:46 am

Negligent manslaughter my hind leg! This should be murder plain & simple! The law needs to be changed to address situations just like this. Rest in Peace little one, your mommy can’t hurt you anymore.

  25. Howie on April 11th, 2019 11:34 am

Monell is now Satan’s Servant. She gets to feel the intense heat as it should be. Whether she gets a slap on the wrist, goes to jail short-term, or prison long-tern. The taking of multi types of drugs is more important than another life to her.

She doesn’t deserve ANY children and the Lord is wrapping his arms around the child now. Yes, it should be a murder charge which means a more severe sentence.

Happening everyday and all day long people leaving children in vehicles. Can’t forget to mention animals also.

  26. kane on April 11th, 2019 11:18 am

When you are on meth and opioids nothing but the drugs come first.

  27. Doris on April 11th, 2019 11:15 am

To me, there needs to be a murder charge against any one that does this. God have mercy on her soul. Quit giving these neglecting people a slap on the hand. She killed that baby. Drugs were her first interest. The little baby ‘s soul is with God. She needs to feel the heat x 1000, the baby felt.

When you have a child your life changes in every way, that child’s needs comes first. She failed that child.
