Courthouse Closed Early Friday Due To Active Shooter Drill

April 26, 2019

An active shooter drill will be held Friday from noon until 5 p.m. at the the M.C. Blanchard Judicial Building in downtown Pensacola. The event is designed to assess how court leadership, stakeholders, staff, and law
enforcement agencies respond to an active shooter scenario within the courthouse, and is part of a continuing effort to both ensure a safe forum for the resolution of legal disputes and protect employees and the public.

Perimeter streets will not be closed, but members of the public should be aware that traffic on the surrounding streets (Government, Spring, Baylen, and Main) may be affected for the duration of the exercise. The public may conduct regular court business from 8 a.m. to noon; however, the courthouse will be closed to the public at noon. Signs will be clearly posted to inform of any temporary road closures and additional important information.

The Pensacola Crawfish Festival is also scheduled for April 26 at the nearby Vince Whibbs Sr. Community Maritime Park. As a result, extra time may be needed to navigate the area surrounding the courthouse.

Beginning at noon, the Escambia County Clerk of the Circuit Court will have limited staff available on the first floor of the Board of County Commissioners Building, 221 Palafox Place, for the filing of emergency matters only, specifically, petitions for domestic violence injunction and Baker Act and Marchman Act petitions. E-filing of documents will not be affected by the closure.

Here’s the deal people the problem with all this is comes down to the media. Yes we have crazy people out in the world. But that is nothing new. When you give every idiot his 15 minutes of fame then your doomed to have the other idiots wanting there fame. Besides this the court house has metal detectors and guards at the doors. So it doesn’t really make sense to do an active shooter drill. If we do it at the court house then we need to do it all places then. So let’s stop being afraid and just live our lives.

How can an active shooter get in that fortress? They almost strip search every time I go there.

How much sense does it make to hold an active shooter drill when the courthouse is closed? Use your brains, I for one would be glad these drills are practiced with the courthouse open. This puts everyone into live action and prepares the courthouse personnel as to how to protect those from the outside that are just there to take care of everyday business!
Come on people these are the times we live in, THINK!

@ Just a comment- This training is not just for the deputies. It’s also for the many employees who work in the courthouse everyday. People complain enough about wasted county money. Would you rather Courthouse employees be paid overtime for them to come in on a Saturday to complete this training?

Should have been scheduled after 5:00 Pm when the court house is closed.

It is great that they want to practice for active shooters. However they should do this on a Saturday the court system is already backed up as it is. This just goes to show you how ridiculous things are getting in this country.
