A 4-year old child died after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday evening at a Century community center.

The incident happened at the Carver Community Center on Jefferson Avenue about 6:20 p.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 66-year old Alberta Knight of Century was in the parking lot of the Carver Community Center on Jefferson Avenue when she pulled her Ford SUV forward and struck the child about 6:20 p.m.

Ka-merius J. Dortch 4, was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola where he was pronounced deceased.

The vehicle was on the community center grounds between a building and basketball courts. A basketball could be seen under the vehicle.

Any charges against Knight are pending the outcome of the FHP investigation.

Horrible tragedy, words are hard for me to find in situations such as this. I pray through God may love and mercy find its way into the hearts of this sweet family. As well as all involved. My prayers and thoughts are with this child’s parents, siblings and all family members through one of the most difficult trials in this life. May you find comfort in hope that you’ll reunite with your sweet child in heaven someday.

May God bless both of the families. And for Brittany I to know what you are going through. I went through the lost of my precious Dedria in 2005. All I can say to you baby is pray, pray, pray and keep the negativity people away from you at your time of mourning. I will pray God gives you the strength to hold on.

Linda without knowing you shouldn’t jump to accusations of who was watching him. Sometimes little kids just do things and get away.

God love these poor families! He will guide the people involved to handle their pain. Strangers will pray for them. This is the worst nightmare for drivers. I beg people in parking lots to hold the hand of their tiny ones. I drive an older car with no camera showing what is near my vehicle. I cannot see these babies! They are dragging behind alone and too short to see.! Please help with this, especially in parking lots. The best advice for all of us is to look under our vehicles before we start the engine. I return balls to my neighbors quite often. The kids don’t know which way their ball went.

My heartfelt condolences goes out to the parents of that precious child and the entire Dortch family, and to Alberta and her entire family she was a classmate of mine and I’m sure her life also has been turned upside down cause I know she did not see that sweet child. May God grant all the strength to endure and the ability to forgive. So very saddened to hear of such a tragedy.

Such a tragic situation all around, condolences to all involved especially the parents of this child. This should be a harsh reminder to all of us, when we are driving where children are playing, we need to be especially cautious. The article says the car was between the building and basketball court, that tells me children were there playing. That little boy had one thing on his mind, his basketball and I think it got away from him and he chased after it. Children will be children, he was only 4 and his little brain can’t process things like adults and could only concentrate on one thing at a time, and that was getting his basketball. Please be aware of children playing and slow way down and be aware that they may dart out in front of you at any time. Fly high little one!

This is heartbreaking! I’m praying for this little angel’s family and for the driver. I know if I were the driver my world would be shattered knowing I accidentally caused the death of this baby. I pray to God to give the family the strength they will need in the days ahead and years to come as they prepare to say goodbye to their baby.
