I agree hwy 97 has become a nightmare at times to drive. I can say 100% without a doubt she was not on her cellphone. I had to dig in her car to find her purse and then dig all through her purse to find it. That phone was hidden deep in her purse. I didn’t say the actual wreck. I just stopped to help and ended up trying to keep her calm until fire and ems got there. She was a very fortunate lady that she wasn’t hurt worse than she was. She definitely could use lots of prayers for some things she told us. So please pray for this lady

97 is dangerous we live off Wiggins Lake and we sure need more police between the school and Nokomis Rd. Our tax money is out the window for the cop shop that mo one uses.

Hwy 97 can easily handle 65mph in most areas and that’s typically the speed I drive, although that isn’t fast enough for some, and they still will blow right past me doing 80.

I don’t think the problem is speed in a majority of cases though, the problem is people staring at their phones and not paying attention. This accident happened on a perfectly straight section of road, and there’s absolutely no reason anyone should lose control of their vehicle unless they are not paying attention.

I common problem I do see is someone poking along doing 50, and then there’s a line of 5 or 6 cars behind them. Eventually someone gets fed up and tries to pass all of them at once which is very dangerous. People who are driving slow and have a long line of cars behind them should find somewhere to pull over and let the others by. These slow drivers are actually more dangerous than the speeders.

Not knowing all of the factors in this case it’s hard to speak to specifics.
One thing is fairly obvious and the driver Must have been wearing a SEAT BELT because that highly injurious word “EJECTED” was NOT Used.

    Seat Belts Save Lives

PEOPLE ARE DRIVING TOO FAST ON THE ROADS. TOO MANY DISTRACTIONS ALSO!

THE SPEED LIMIT FROM THE CAUTION LIGHT BY THE SCHOOL AND THE TOP OF WIGGENS LAKE HILL SHOULD BE 50 MPH WITH THE HILL AND ALL THE CURVES .THE SCHOOL ZONE SHOULD BE 25 MPH. DOES ANY ONE NO WHY THE SCHOOL ZONE IS SLOWER THAN BRATT, NORTHVIEW, MOLINO… jest my 2 cents

Saw wreck minutes after it happened. To me the Walnut Hill Sheriffs station should be manned. Went we passed it looked like it was empty of deputies. Someone should figure out that weekends is a prime time for these kind of accidents to happen. With this station closed, response time is very slow. Thanks to the Walnut hill fire department (volunteer I think) for getting to the scene and aiding the people in the car. This deputy building was built with Florida tax payer money. You would think the Sheriff would use the facility.

..hwy 97 is not the problem..wide right of ways and moderate curves..only a few places where you have less than a half mile visibility..Been driving that road for over 50 years..the culprit is speeding, distraction , opioids, alcohol , etc..you will never legislate common sence and responsible behavior..just slow down and focus on driving

55 arrive alive. Pray for the driver. It is time for all of us to be law abiding citizens. Just yesterday day, I had a tailgater and they didn’t even slow down to 20 at Ernest Ward, light flashing. If we had a dedicated Highway Patrol or Sheriff Officer just for Hwy 97. These crimes, yes I said crimes, would not happen on a Daily basis. Remember folks there are others on the highway, it’s not just about you. Please obey the law.

The PEOPLE DRIVING are dangerous. NOT the road.

  18. Williewonka on March 16th, 2019 12:36 am

I agree with A Alex. Highway 97 is a dangerous highway…speeders. passing on yellow line, texting, Tailgating, you name it. Very seldom see law enforcement on 97.

  19. A Alex on March 15th, 2019 9:48 pm

Between speed and cell phones,I stay off of 97. Nothing in Atmore is
Worth the risk of my life on this road.
