George H. Warren

George H. Warren, 75, of Pace, Florida, passed away Friday, January 25, 2019. He retired from the United States Postal Service after many years as a mail carrier, and then drove a school bus for Santa Rosa County Schools. Since childhood, George proved to be a true athlete. Some of his favorite sports were softball, tennis, bowling, and especially golf, including tournaments with his mom, Kathryn . He and his wife Bobbi enjoyed square dancing, he loved working outside in his yard, and playing ping pong with his children and grandchildren. He especially loved everyone coming together for family cook outs. George was the life of any party and loved to laugh. He is preceded in death by his mother Kathryn Warren, father George H. Carpenter and wife Barbara Warren.

He is survived by his stepfather, George C. Warren, sister Judy Ezell, children John Warren, Paul Warren, Wendy Schabatka (Ralf), Cindi Vinyard (Don), Steven Coleman, Jeri Garnish, Bobbi Eklund (Magnus), Shelly Taylor (Monty), 8 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 3, 2019, from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North, with the Funeral Service following at 12:00 PM.

Hettie Lewis Sanders

January 29, 2019

Hettie Lewis Sanders, 80 of Walnut Hill, FL, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2019, in Fairhope, AL. She was a homemaker, born in Scranton, AR, on June 9, 1938, to the late John W. and Bertha Burnette Stovall.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Irie O’Neal Lewis and Clarence Sanders, and multiple brothers and sisters.

Survivors are two sons, Orville (Darra) Lewis of Bay Springs, FL, and Roy (Lynn) Lewis of Pace, FL; two daughters: Bertha (Joey) Brown of Perdido, AL, and Carol (Mike) Crittenden of Fairhope, AL; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at 1 p.m. in Bay Springs Cemetery, Bay Springs, FL, with Bro. Kenneth Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Bay Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her children and their spouses..

John P. Johnson

Mr. John P. Johnson, age 59, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019 in Lake City, Florida.

Mr. Johnson was a native of Milton, FL and had resided in Century, FL for most of his life. He was of the Assembly of God Faith. He is preceded in death by his parents, JB and Vonniev Johnson.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Kay; two sons, Donnie Johnson of Pensacola, FL and Ben Johnson of Milton, FL; four brothers, Lewis (Wanda) Johnson of Milton, FL, Joseph V. (Mary) Johnson of Century, FL, Ollie (Donna) Johnson of Century, FL and JB (Trudy) Johnson, Jr. of Century, FL; step-mother, Laura Johnson of Century, FL and aunt, Helen Clark of Wetumpka, AL.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Byrneville United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Hawkins officiating.

Burial will follow at Byrneville United Methodist Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2019 from 1:00 PM until service time at 2:00 PM at the Byrneville United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers will be Dane Clark, Andy Miles, Bryan Carro, Bryson Carro, Wade White and Caleb White.

$1.58 Million Hanks Road Bridge Replacement Begins Next Week

January 29, 2019

The Florida Department of Transportation has announced the $1.58 million replacement of the Hanks Road Bridge over Breastworks Creek in Bratt.

Work a begin the week of Monday, February 4 to replace the bridge.

The project also includes new guardrail, drainage improvements, milling and resurfacing, and new signs and pavement markings. Hanks Road will be closed during construction. Drivers west of the bridge will be detoured to Highway 99 and Highway 4. Drivers east of the bridge will be detoured east on Hanks Road to Pine Barren Road. The project is anticipated to be complete in the fall.

The current bridge was constructed in 1968.

All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.

Driver’s License Service In Century Tuesday

Area residents will be able to receive driver’s license services in Century Tuesday.

Escambia County Tax Collector Scott Lunsford has partnered with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to bring the Florida Licensing On Wheels (FLOW) mobile office in Century on Tuesday, February 5 until 3 p.m. at the Billy G. Ward Courthouse at 7500 North Century Boulevard.

FLOW is a stand-alone mobile office with technology to provide most motorists’ needs. The mobile unit provides a convenient method to renew a driver’s license, obtain a replacement driver’s license, conversion or reciprocation of out-of-state license, change a name or address on a current driver’s license or identification card, and get a first-time identification card. In addition to licensing services, the mobile unit also provides an opportunity to renew or replace a vehicle registration and apply, renew or replace disabled parking placards. Written and driving tests are not available from the FLOW unit.

Citizens using the FLOW services are encouraged to visit EscambiaTaxCollector.com and click the “What Do I Bring” button for information on what is needed for these services.

Staff from the tax collector’s office will be on hand to answer all FLOW service questions and questions concerning all other tax collector services such as property tax, business tax receipts, concealed weapons licensing, etc. Citizens also can drop off their property tax payments (checks only).

Cantonment Man Gets Jail Time For Possessing Meth At Probation Office

January 28, 2019

A Cantonment man has been sentenced to time in the county jail for possessing methamphetamine inside a probation office.

Michael T. Goodwin, 48, was charged with possession of a controlled substance. He received 120 days in jail with credit for 25 days served.

Methamphetamine was discovered inside Goodwin’s wallet at the Probation and Parole Office on Davis Highway.

Man Airlifted After Molino Dirt Bike Accident

January 28, 2019

A man was seriously injured in a dirt bike accident at a home in Molino Sunday afternoon.

The 33-year old man was airlifted by LifeFlight helicopter to a Pensacola hospital following the accident about 3:35 p.m. on Crabtree Church Road.

The Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS also responded.

Additional details have not been released.

U.S. Postal Service Stamp Prices Have Increased

Mailing a letter and some packages will now cost you a little bit more.

The United States Postal Service has increased rates of not only stamps but also flat rate boxes and envelopes and other mail services.

Postage for a one-ounce letter will increase from 50 cents to 55 cents, but the price of each additional ounce has decreased from 21 to 15 cents. The nickel increase for a first-class stamp is the largest percentage hike since a four cent increase in 1991.
