Family Celebrates Three Generations Of Birthdays On The Same Day

Against the odds, three generations of a local family are celebrated a birthday on Sunday.

Janis O’Farrell of Walnut Hill, born in 1935, turned 84. Her son Dennis O’Farrell of Walnut Hill, born in 1959, turned 60. His daughter Candi O’Farrell Lusk of nearby Perdido, AL, was born in 1981 and turned 38 Sunday.

What are the odds? 1 in 133,225, according to published reports.

Bowman Avenue Closed At Nine Mile Road

January 22, 2019

Beginning 7 a.m. Tuesday, Bowman Avenue South between West Nine Mile Road and Bush Street will be closed to through traffic. Traffic will be detoured along Ashland Avenue South to Bush Street, then east back to Bowman Avenue. Construction will consist of new FDOT roadway construction.

The roadway closure is expected to remain in effect for approximately five days and every effort will be made to expedite construction efforts to reopen the road before Sunday, Jan. 27.

If other lane or roadway closures are necessary beyond the anticipated time periods, another notice will be issued.

Seven Northview Girls Weightlifters Advance To Regionals

Seven Northview High School girls weightlifters are advancing to regionals.

Chiefs earning advancement at last week’s district meet at Baker, along with their weight class and district rank, were:

Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training Course On Wednesday

Escambia County Extension Services will host a Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training course Wednesday, Jan. 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with topics to include introduction to produce safety, soil amendments, agricultural water and how to develop a farm food safety plan. The event will take place at the UF/IFAS Extension Escambia County 4-H Center located at 3730 Stefani Road in Cantonment.

Fruit and vegetable growers and others interested in learning about produce safety, the Food Safety Modernization Act, Good Agricultural Practices, and co-management of natural resources and food safety are encouraged to attend. The PSA Grower Training Course also serves as a way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement.

The course instructors will spend approximately seven hours of instruction time covering content contained in these seven modules:

  • Introduction to Produce Safety
  • Worker Health, Hygiene, and Training
  • Soil Amendments
  • Wildlife, Domesticated Animals, and Land Use
  • Agricultural Water (Part I: Production Water; Part II: Postharvest Water)
  • Postharvest Handling and Sanitation
  • How to Develop a Farm Food Safety Plan

In addition to learning about produce safety best practices, key parts of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirements are outlined within each module. There will be time for questions and discussion, and participants should come prepared to share their experiences and produce safety questions.

The course fee is $25 for produce industry members and government/university employees and $125 for all other attendees. Registration includes the training materials, lunch, refreshments and a certificate of course attendance issued by the Association of Food and Drug Officials. Registration is limited. Learn To Play The Mountain Dulcimer At The Molino Library

You can learn to play the mountain dulcimer at the Molino Branch Library.

The “Molino Melodies” class will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29 at the library. The class is free, and no experience or materials are required. Dulcimers are provided for the class.

John Lewis Folsom, Sr.

Mr. John Lewis Folsom, Sr., age 92 of Daphne, AL, formerly of Flomaton, AL, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2019 at a Daphne, AL healthcare facility.

Mr. Folsom was a native of Georgiana, AL, and a member of the Flomaton community for 60 years coming from Marbury, AL.  He was a United States Arm Veteran having served in Japan during WWII earning the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Metal, Army Occupation Ribbon, Japan Victory Ribbon and one Overseas Service Bar.  Mr. Folsom served as an educator 40 years in the Escambia County Alabama School System, and eighteen of those years as Flomaton High School principal.   Mr. Folsom was a member of the Flomaton’s Lion’s Club, the American Heart Association, and the Alabama Silver Haired Legislature. He was a former member of Flomaton First Baptist Church where he served as Deacon Emeritus and for the last several years was active in First Baptist Church of Loxley.

He is survived by his wife, Shelmerdene Folsom of Daphne, AL; sons, John L. (Betty Ann) Folsom of Tifton, GA, Michael T. (Rita) Folsom of Clayton, N.C., Kenneth L. (Sharon) Folsom of Loxley, AL, Stephen C. (Tina) Folsom of Helena, AL; thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Flomaton First Baptist Church at 2 P.M. with Dr. Jerry Keese officiating.

Interment will follow in Flomaton Cemetery, Flomaton, AL.

Pallbearers will be Carter Folsom, Ken Folsom, Austin Folsom, Craig Asrhus, Wesley Buchta, Joey Braswell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Carter Folsom, Chris Morrow, Patrick Donnelly.

Flowers are being accepted but donations or contributions may be made to the Flomaton Public Library, American Heart Association and Isaiah’s Ministry.

Helton Ray “Sonny” Peebles

Mr. Helton Ray “Sonny” Peebles, age 77, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2019 in Pensacola, Florida.

Mr. Peebles was a native of Bratt, FL and had resided in Flomaton, AL for the past 41 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, avid fisherman and camper. He retired with the US Navy with 20 years of service, retired from Addico in Brewton with 20 years of service and attended the Osaka Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Marguerite Peebles and brother Bud Peebles.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Claudia Marie Peebles of Flomaton, AL; two sons, Luther Ray (Ammie) Peebles of Stapleton, AL and Brain Karl (Daphne) Peebles of Stapleton, AL; four granddaughters, Stevie (Isaiah) Day, Elizabeth (JD) Duddy, Whitney Thompson and Brianna Peebles and six great grandchildren, McKinleigh, Alayna, Everly, Kaiden, Kasen and Rylie.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 10:00 AM at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Peebles officiating.

Burial will follow at Traveler’s Rest Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2019 from 6 to 8 PM at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Dewayne Gresham, Mike Howington, Donald Gresham, Michael Gresham, Jason Peebles and Ronald Peebles.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Paul Knowles, Robert Smith and Hughey Gresham.

Mrs. Edna Glenn Thornton

Mrs. Edna Glenn Thornton, age 78, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at her home in Byrneville, Florida.

Mrs. Thornton was a native of Molino, FL and had resided in Byrneville, FL for most of her life. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Thornton, Sr.

She is survived by one son, Richard (Lena) Thornton, Jr. of Pace, FL; three daughters, Peggy Sue Settle of Spartanburg, SC, Johnnie Elizabeth Thornton of Tulsa, OK and Lillie Diane (John) de Jarnette of Byrneville, FL; two brothers, Danny Glenn of Perdido, AL and Roy Gene (Renee) of Clinton, LA; three sisters, Judy (Joe) Phillips of Jacksonville, FL, Donna Reaves of McDavid, FL and Charlene (James) Cruz of Jacksonville, FL; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 26 at 11:00 AM at Byrneville United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Hawkins officiating.

Burial will follow at Byrneville United Methodist Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 10:00 AM until service time at 11:00 AM at the Byrneville United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers will be Richard Thornton III, Clay Helton, Jr., Ricky Derik Cofield, Randy Murph, Alan Driskell and Allen Holland.

Honorary Pallbearer will be Briley Beers.
