Dump Truck Driver Involved In Fatal Hit And Run Identified

The Florida Highway Patrol has found the vehicle and driver they believe was involved in a fatal hit and run crash on Fairfield Drive on January 17.

The vehicle was a yellow Ford F700 single axle dump truck with a yellow flatbed trailer with a Bobcat loader, a small paving machine and an asphalt roller. The dump truck was driven by 46-year old William Miles, Jr. of Ashland, IL.

About 6:30 p.m. on January 17, the FHP says Miles struck a pedestrian now identified as 60-year old Don Neal Powell of Pensacola on Fairfield Drive near Pace Boulevard. Powell was pronounced deceased following the crash.

The FHP said any charges against Miles are pending the outcome of their investigation.

    Praying for the family of the victim also prayers for the driver and his family. It is divesting to all involved.

    Chris, you are right on with your comment. We were traveling east on Fairfield and some guys were standing around the corner with cardboard signs and sad faces. Our family policy is to NOT give money of any sort to them. Sometimes they can become aggressive as far as stepping away from the curb and into the edge of traffic to beg for money.
    The kids have offered to go to a sub sandwich store or McDonald’s and get them something to eat and have been yelled at by the sign-holders for that, they only want money.
    Sad the guy got killed yet like the many who are in the streets at night in dark clothing it is a Godsend that more are not injured or killed.
    Drivers must be aware at ALL times.

    Fairfield at pace is where a bunch of homeless sit right next to the road causing
    hazards. Some take turns panhandling.
    Some IMHO drink.
    This may of been a cause.
    That intersection is dangerous at best of times
