Developer Seeks Rezoning For New General Retail Store Fronting Muscogee Road

January 3, 2019

A new general retail store could be on the way to Cantonment.

Terramore Development, as agent for owners Steven and Carrin Buttrick, are seeking to rezone a portion of the property at 149 Highway 97 South from low density residential to a commercial district. The parcel is at the intersection of Highway 97 and Muscogee Road, with most of the frontage on Muscogee Road.

The zoning change must be approved by the Escambia County Planning Board and the Escambia County Commission before any permits are issued. The Planning Board is set to hear the proposal on January 8, and the BOCC will hear the request on February 7.

The rezoning application does not reveal what business might be opened at the location. But according to their website, Terramore Development of Thomasville, GA, is “a preferred developer for Dollar General along with developing for other national tenants such as Publix Supermarkets, Vitamin Shoppe, Dunkin Donuts, Chipotle and AT&T” in the southeastern United States.

Can you also tell us what is going on with the house on the right when you first turn the corner heading south on 97, and with the cleared lot between it and the railroad?

Dollar General has turned traffic at Neal Road and Highway 29 into a nightmare.

People here lack basic driving and comprehension skills, for to navigate complicated traffic patterns. Let’s not make a bad problem worse.

A Dunkin Donuts or Waffle House would be great, since that will bring more Law Enforcement into the area for their break of a $4 meal, donuts and coffee.

No matter what store it is, there will be more traffic and with that comes accidents. More crime will move into that area with robberies and with that comes shootings. Publix, Walmart and Dollar General all do their homework in advance – build on busy highways, the number of residents per sq. mile, how high or low the revenue will be and I’m sure they check on the crime totals in the area. But who knows what may show up on that corner, times are changing.

    No.
    No.
    NO.

We don’t need any commercial development on that corner.

@Becky- Mattress Store! lol I do think a Farmer’s Market is a good idea.

I just can not see a Publix in Cantonment.

I guess as soon as they build Highway 39 then they can get started.

I would like to see a Walmart go in on the old gofl course at Hwy 39 & Muscogee Rd. Maybe clean up some of the old building on Mucogee Rd. But stay out of the neighbors. It’s not that far to a Dollar store or grocery store from that location.

And thus it begins. Not sure why everyone is asking “why not somewhere more visual”. People, the Belauh Beltway will come through everyone property west of this intersection and go straight through the property running parallel to Jacks Branch until it comes out on Barrineau Park Road to Hwy 29. What do you think is going to be surrounding that beltway? Let me enlighten you: gas stations, dollar generals, restaurants, fast food – - all followed closely and quickly by crime, unbelievable traffic and homes that lose value quicker than you can saw what the heck happened here?

We moved to Beulah 25 years ago for quiet, a nice place to raise our children, little traffic yet a short distance from town. It was wonderful to see the stars at night and listen to the frogs and crickets. I even had deer in the back yard. Now I can’t see the stars for all the lights, it is no longer quiet due to construction and traffic and heavy equipment. And the short distance to town takes an extremely long time.

Chipotle’s!!! lol. more than likely a dollar general/99 cent store. Or maybe another liquor store.

Welcome new job opportunities every time.
Dollar General would be welcome although I would like to see a Dollar Tree up here. Cantonment is almost as poor a community as Century. Let’s build it up with retail that would help the area.

I was hoping for another mattress store. A farmers market right next to the quick fill would be nice but other than that, please don’t bring more traffic on these roads.

I do not see that as a very safe location. Surely there is a better one. Do these developers check an area’s news source before they decide to put something somewhere. Why not somewhere more visible and accessible with fewer established residents?

I’ve said for a few years that this small little town feeling we have here in Cantonment is about to change . With the way that Beulah has built up over the past five years , the movement is now looking toward cantonment. If we don’t get active our small little town going to be built up quick

    Yay!

    We’re getting a Chipotle’s!!!

Just what I figured, another Dollar General.
