Two Killed In East Kingsfield Crash; Cantonment Man Charged With DUI Manslaughter

January 12, 2019

Two people were killed in a crash early Saturday morning on East Kingsfield Road, and a Cantonment man has been charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 24-year old Hunter Russell Black was traveling west on Kingsfield Road near Kingslake Drive in a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu when he crossed the centerline and into the path of a 2001 Mitsubishi driven by 22-year old Antoinette Marie McCoy of Pensacola. McCoy attempted to avoid the collision but was hit head-on.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes of extensive extrication to free McCoy and her passenger, 15-year old Sean Alexander Banks of Pensacola, from their overturned vehicle. McCoy was airlifted by LifeFlight helicopter to Baptist Hospital and Banks was transported to Baptist Hospital by Escambia County EMS. Both were later pronounced deceased from their injuries.

Black was charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter and booked into the Escambia County Jail. He was released early Sunday morning on a $25,000 bond.

Banks was a sophomore at Tate High School. Read more…

I played football along side this amazing young man and even got to wear his number on game day shorty before he passed. The energy and positivity he brought to the field is unmatched to this day. Tate’s athletics program will never be the same without him. Amazing athlete, friend, student, and everything in between. He’s flying high among the angels and I know he’s watching over his family. I’ve been praying for his family since the accident and it’s still on my mind to this day. I miss you Sean LLSB

Antoinette was my sister and it’s still kind of hard to accept the fact that she is really gone.Sean wasn’t my biological brother but we always treated each other as such. When my mom told me about this accident I was in disbelief and i was instantly filled with hate. For a long time I really despised the man that did this. But later on down the road I forgave him not only because it was the right thing to do but it wasn’t going to get any better and I wasn’t going to be able to move on in life.Sometimes you have to forgive the people you don’t like or love in order to move to the next step in your life. Its funny because we were planning a trip to Las Vegas when I turned 21 (I turned 21 01-27-2020).We had everything all planned out, because we had been planning this for over a year. But everything happens for a reason.God Bless!!

For those of you that do not understand the system. Mr. Black was not on probation, he was on pre trial intervention meaning that was his first slap on the wrist. I never said what he did shouldn’t be punished, I also never said I wasnt terribly sorry for the victims family. What I did say was these were 3 young people that all had their loves changed /and taken that night and regardless if the laws were stricter or not, it is rare that young people think any of this could happen to them. If you think this man isnt in jail waking up every morning feeling absolutely awful for what he has done your out of your mind. I dont see how none of you can put yourself in his mothers shoes, or his grandmothers.. I feel awful for both families and with that being said and before I see more “rebecca”how dare you type messages… YES i do think this man should go to prison and he most likely will get 30 years 15 or each person, i was simply saying i feel terrible for his family as well as the victims family… this accident caused many years of heartache and loss for all.

  4. Lisa nordin on January 15th, 2019 12:43 pm

The guy is on probation and did this????? Whoever you are “Rebecca” is sad what you say. This man needs to be buried under the jail, Especialy with him already being on probation. Sad thing is that jthe drunk probably doesn’t even remember what happened.
This was a friend and a coworker. Living the beginning of new things, a good new job etc…..
The judge that let him out on any bond period…that judge should be fired…bc if the drunk was on probation…what’s to stop him from doing it again JUST BECAUSE HES WAS OUT ON BOND??????? IT DIDNT STOP HIM FROM DOING IT ON PROBATION. IS THAT JUDGE DUMB OR WHAT?
So sorry for the parents and family of them and now its just their little sister left….of which Antionett was very close to.
RIP MY FRIEND! I will miss you.

  5. Taylor on January 14th, 2019 12:29 pm

Do you people not understand that he WILL be punished. Everyone is acting as if he’s getting away with it.

  6. Alicia on January 14th, 2019 9:49 am

Rebecca…I have NEVER driven drunk! STOP making excuses for PATHETIC people who get behind the wheel of a car drunk!! There are too many options, UBER, Taxi or phone someone to pick you up! His bond should have been $250,000 or more!! RIP to those who lost there lives.

  7. Tamika on January 14th, 2019 9:41 am

This ia sad and wrong the parent cried from her soul and it was a very very sad hurtful sound this is si wrong for him to be set free fir such violent carnal act , when people violate probation soberly they have no bond tgis system is backwards just like the ones thats running it.

  8. Rasheed Jackson on January 14th, 2019 9:25 am

Sorry Rebecca but Mr. black did not lose his life as you stated. He took the lives of two innocent people due to his inability or refusal to see a problem with taking a chance and driving while drunk. Yes he was drunk!!! His quality of life will probably change because of his action but he is still here. His mother can still see him touch him hug him, and talk to him. He is not dead and buried in a grave. He should not have been released on bail. Now to answer your question, How many of you have had a drink and gotten behind the wheel? “I for one have never had a drink and driven a car. This is not something everyone does. Most people have better judgement than Mr. Black, and apparently you. Until you have lost a loved one due to someones stupidity YOU should not be judging people based on how they feel towards this man, or calling them out for voicing their opinion. There is absolutely no excuse, or defense, for Mr. Black’s behavior. And why? Because he had ZERO concern for the safety, or the lives of the people on that road that night.

  9. Tetiana on January 14th, 2019 8:43 am

I am so sorry for this terrible loss of 2 chidren… my kids drive to school every day and my heart is acheking right now as I imagine if that could happen to them ! I can not imagine your pain of this horrible loss and knowledge that killer is on the loose. Unbeliavable! He should never be able to get his license back!
Praying for comfort for your family and friends !
May the Lord help you through this rough time…

  10. Mike Palmer on January 14th, 2019 7:39 am

Does anyone know the name of the judge that released this person on bond?

  11. Rebecca on January 14th, 2019 7:31 am

People!! I realize this is AWFUL!! But for some of you to have ZERO sympathy for the 24 year old man blows my mind!! How many of you have had a drink and gotten behind the wheel? Yes this man made a HUGE mistake that he will NEVERR forget. And I am HEARTBROKEN for the victims and their families! With Ll of this being said, why dont we all just pray for peace with everyone involved instead of talk poorly about this person. I for one do not know any of the people involved but I have made bad choices in my life and I know what the guilt can do to someone and that the law will hold him accountable. This is a terrible tragedy for our whole community, be loving and kind instead of quick to throw stones. PS… yes I’m disgusted that alchohol did this and mr.blacks lack of judgement, it also could have been anyone’s son, uncle, grandson daughter, etc. This is a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE tragedy 100000% …. now if this young man is to be out here drinking or having some party of a good time… then yes, he deserves the backlash. But as for now, let’s unite and just pray! For the victims, the families, justice and peace for all. Tragic end to 3 young peoples endless possibilities and future

  12. Mary on January 14th, 2019 1:05 am

Omg!!!!!!! YOU KILLED 2innocent people and they let you out????? Why is the law allowing this??? You are a flight risk. My prayers to the family for their lost I truly mean that. I’m so angry about this but who listens maybe the group of moms called…M.A.D.D ” mothers against drunk drivers

  13. joe on January 14th, 2019 12:13 am

Alcohol has proven yet again to destroy good people.Prayers for you all involved….

  14. Pam on January 13th, 2019 11:38 pm

Our judicial system had better not let this family down. If they let this murderer get less time then a shoplifter cause it’s his first offense, that would be a slap in the face to the family and the city of Pensacola. I pray justice will be served and this family can grieve and move forward and not have to drag this out. He willingly got in his vehicle drunk and used his vehicle to take the lives of an exceptional young man and his sister. He is a murderer!

  15. Cindy Bess on January 13th, 2019 11:27 pm

Praying for the family! I can’t believe this man is not still locked up!
Jesus, keep this family through all of this.

  16. Dee on January 13th, 2019 9:56 pm

My prayers go out to the family, friends, plus the Tate Aggies’ family.

Friends don’t let friends drive. This is at least the second DUI in the past two weekends taking the lives of four people. Three were in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you drink and drive, you need to get help plus go to jail for a very long time.

  17. AbbiSt on January 13th, 2019 5:36 pm

It is disturbing to know that this man has 2 counts of manslaughter and was released on a 25000 bond from the esc jail. However, if a husband and wife get in an argument and cops are called (and one person is charged with domestic violence) there is no bond. Also, if someone violates probation (for example someone is out on bond for driving with no license and gets pulled over again driving with no license) there is ALSO no bond. To think that the guy smiling in his mugshot after killing 2 innocent people has the opportunity to be free after just stating those facts….its sick.
    Our judicial system.
    Sick.
    Think about it folks.
My prayers and condolences goes out to everyone’s family involved.

  18. Jennifer berke on January 13th, 2019 4:10 pm

Out on bail? What an insult to Sean and Antoinette’s family.

  19. Angela Holley on January 13th, 2019 1:59 pm

This is such a tragedy. My heart goes out to the family of this young man and his older sister. May God comfort them at this sad time.

  20. Barbara on January 13th, 2019 12:37 pm

Hunter Russell Black was charged in February 2018 of Liquor and Marijuana possession while driving and obviously has learned nothing after that charge! Now he killed two innocent people while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, therefore he should spend the rest of his life in prison without parole!!!

  21. Karen Williams on January 13th, 2019 11:33 am

Thank you North Escambia for showing the brutal pictures. The victims die instantly. These two struggled for life. The picture of the rescue worker down in the mud of the upside down car says it all. My brother was killed by a drunk and my trooper son was hit by one. Everyone I speak to has been touched by a drunk driver.

  22. Tasha on January 13th, 2019 10:10 am

DUI does not always imply alcohol was involved….”driving under the influence” can mean alcohol and/or drugs caused his impairment. Prayers for all involved.

  23. Janet on January 13th, 2019 9:54 am

That should be the last smile he’ll be wearing for some years!

  24. Gary on January 13th, 2019 8:31 am

Only a $25K bond is just wrong. The drunk deliberately drove drunk and killed TWO innocent people. Hopefully Hunter Russell Black will get two consecutive life sentences without parole.

  25. joe on January 13th, 2019 4:21 am

i think bars and places to drink all should be banned from anywhere in the united states only way to buy drink is to buy it at a grocery or package and law syas take home and drink if u drive u will be executed

  26. chris on January 13th, 2019 12:44 am

The devils drink claims 2 innocents.
    I never liked the taste.
Throw the book at this guy.
    No bond crime for sure..

  27. Whisperjet on January 12th, 2019 11:59 pm

…DUI manslaughter should be a “no bond” crime..he will bond out by morning and go home to his family..meanwhile the other family is planning 2 funerals..Where is justice ?..not here , for sure..

  28. C mcvay on January 12th, 2019 11:42 pm

This man should never get out of jail. He has destroyed a beautiful family. These two bright young people had their whole life ahead of them. He got drunk and decided to drive. He deserves everything to go to prison.

SHOULD BE NO BOND>>>>>NOTHING MORE>>>NOTHING MORE

  31. Robert Clifford on January 12th, 2019 8:39 pm

This is no different than a premeditated murder. He chose to drive drunk. He should get the same life sentences as a person who goes and kills someone in another way. There is no difference. He should get 2 life sentences.

  32. anne 1of2 on January 12th, 2019 7:35 pm

There has to be a reason our very loved ones die and the drunks seem to walk away .How could any judge let him out of jail? Dear God, keep him off of the roads! I feel as sick as if those were my own family members!

  33. Lifetime victim of alcoholics on January 12th, 2019 7:32 pm

At age 12, I sat in the driveway behind the family car to keep my alcoholic father from driving. Before MADD was ever heard of. I grew up in an alcoholic home. It was not fun.
I was always afraid to drink. My husband doesn’t drink because of my uneasiness.
My daughter and 2 year old grandson were hit head on 2 years ago by a drunk driver. They survived, but the drunk driver did not. They will never be the same… grandbaby healed from his injuries. But the nightmares that woke him nightly for weeks were no fun… and for months, if you had to put on your brakes hard, he would freak out. My daughter had 2 broken knees, and 4 more broken bones below her right knee, as well as severe back muscle injury, bruising and cuts. She lost 6 months of work, and 10 months of nursing school. I was so grateful for their survival, I couldn’t be angry. And I prayed for the other driver’s family and friends.

No one ever thinks it will happen to them. Life in prison will never heal injuries or bring back loved ones. We need to find a way to stop this before it starts.

This is such a sad situation and one that will remain with this young man for the rest of his life. My prayers are for all of the families for they all have lost someone they love, in one way or another. This young man should not have been driving and his friends should not have let him. Have compassion on him and especially on his family and give your earnest prayers to God for the families of the 2 precious lives that were lost. No one is perfect and we have all done stupid things at one time or another. This could have been one of our friends or family so please look deep in your heart and pray for all involved.

  44. William Jones on January 12th, 2019 3:51 pm

I played football at Tate with Sean, and he was my sister’s boyfriend. He was and still is one of the best people I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. He had just played a basketball game that night and had visited my sister, when somebody decided to drive while drunk. All they wanted to do was get home. He and his family, and sister included, are God-fearing and kind, and I cannot believe that this tragedy happened to them. I know without a shadow of a doubt that Sean and Antoinette are in a better place, and are probably happier now than I’ll ever be during my time here on earth.

I ask that all who are able take flowers to the site of the crash and please pray for this family, and for Mr. Black as well. If just one person can have their life changed for the better by this, they will not have died in vain. God bless.

  45. Donna Anders on January 12th, 2019 3:49 pm

Bond? After taking two lives, he should NOT be granted bond at all. And with such a low amount of $25,000. He could post bond and be out drinking and driving tomorrow. What was this judge thinking?
    Inexcusable!

  46. vicky on January 12th, 2019 3:42 pm

it’s crazy you rob a store and get a $250.000 bond you kill someone you get a $25.000 bond how crazy is that but he shouldn’t have a bond and if he did it should be like a million dollars people say it is not fair to him but what about the victim’s families and his family NOBODY WINS

  47. Donna Anders on January 12th, 2019 3:40 pm

Bond? He should NOT be able to post bond after this level of tragedy! And only $25,000…. This kid could be out drinking and driving tomorrow.
What was the judge thinking? Inexcusable.

  48. Melanie on January 12th, 2019 3:40 pm

Life in prison. There are no excuses for drunken driving! None!

  49. Christy Langford on January 12th, 2019 3:31 pm

This breaks my heart. Two young people killed because some jerk chose to drive drunk. Why is it always the innocent one’s who are killed? Hopefully the truck driver will get the death sentence for what he has done.

  50. My opinion on January 12th, 2019 3:27 pm

Please keep in mind the driver who was charged in this wreck has his family reading these comments.you can raise these kids to the best of your ability and when they are this age you have no control over their actions.prayers for all involved.

  51. Karma on January 12th, 2019 2:10 pm

I pray everyone of you sorry people who say the other driver should die, be killed, locked up for life and any other wording…I pray you never have to experience the pain of your child or family member killing someone else and people posting the same sickening post about them as you all have posted here! I know everyone involved and it makes me sick to hear all these negative post! YOU ALL ARE DOING YOUR SELF RIGHTEOUS ATTACKING INSTEAD OF YOUR ABILITY TO PRAY AND SUPPORT EVERYONE!

  52. mnon on January 12th, 2019 2:09 pm

such a tragedy… throw the book at this guy… DUI manslaughter and $25k bond… ridiculous.

  53. Melissa on January 12th, 2019 1:59 pm

    Death Penalty for DUI.
Why is this still being allowed to happen? Why are people being murdered because of bad choices that involve alcohol? You drive drunk you should face the Death Penalty when caught. Period.

We need tougher laws and we needed them yesterday.
Then maybe these two precious souls would have been able to fulfill their purpose here on earth

  54. Todd Bowers on January 12th, 2019 1:55 pm

This is a very Tragic situation. Not only did two people lose their lives, but their friends and family share in that loss. Praying for everyone and I do mean everyone involved. But the attacks on the young gentlemen driving that hit them are sickening to me! JOHN 8:7 says “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”. I’m no saint, all I can do is offer prayers for EVERYONE, prayers of understanding, Forgiveness, Love. All the families feel their heart ripped out already and don’t need your brutal voices adding to their pains. I am truly sorry for your families loss, I offer up prayers because nothing will undo this tragedy. For either family, because there are at the least Two moms suffering over this tragedy not just one! Hold you pens and tongues and simply offer support and prayers for all.

  55. Cantonment Grandmother on January 12th, 2019 1:51 pm

First, prayers for the families that lost loved ones last night. So tragic for all involved. I learned of this wreck while attending a Memorial service this morning for a nephew who was taken too soon.

Second, I have family that lives in Kings Road and they, including two of my granddaughters drive that road. Cantonment has had more than its share of bad wrecks lately. Please everyone be more attentive when you drive. Think for the other drivers too, not just yourself, and plan on getting home alive. Believe me, your parents will thank you for it.

Lastly, I’m also angry that the drunk driver is able to bond out for a mere $25,000. With a bondsman, that is nothing compared to the loss of the victims families. He should have to sit in jail and start serving time. I hope that wonderful family he’s from doesn’t hire him a big lawyer who will try to get this man off scott free. The victims deserve justice, they weren’t given a choice.

  56. Autumn beede on January 12th, 2019 1:48 pm

  57. Sherry on January 12th, 2019 1:45 pm

This has been going on for decades, and yet people STILL get behind the wheel drunk because nobody ever thinks it can happen to them. And yet here we are, AGAIN. There’s absolutely NO EXCUSE for this! We have Uber, Lyft, taxi cabs, family members, & friends, etc. that can & will pick you up if you’ve had too much to drink. 3 lives and countless other family members lives’ destroyed now because of the selfish actions of the driver. I know we’re all human and we all make mistakes, but this was 100% preventable. He deserves life in prison!!

  58. Margie on January 12th, 2019 1:26 pm

Prayers for all involved including Highway patrol that has to live with these images forever I will never understand why the drunk drivers only come out with scratches and bruises… minor injuries all awhile the people they hit get so seriously injured or killed. This is so sad.

  59. Kim Nelson on January 12th, 2019 1:14 pm

So sad that this person killed two innocent young people, but the fact that he only has a 25,000.00 bond is outrageous. Our legal system has to be the most screwed up ever!! Prayers to the family that lost these two young souls. And no matter what kind of family the killer came from, I hope and pray they let him sit jail.

  60. Iris Ziglar on January 12th, 2019 1:10 pm

No amount of comments will change this tragic situation. I just think as we pray for the families of these victims that we remember to pray for Hunter’s family. This is a nightmare that they will live with forever. I pray that God will give them peace. They are suffering too. Also, a prayer for Hunter would also be appropriate.

  61. Janice Poolson on January 12th, 2019 12:53 pm

We live on Kingsflied and I have grandchildren that drive and live on Kingsflied, when I see a story like this I look for the names with fear. I’m so sorry for ALL the families and friends that this will affect. Remember this young man has a family also that is in pain because he chose to drink and drive. No family will ever be the same because of his choice. Prayers for all.

  65. Jdub on January 12th, 2019 12:28 pm

This is just so unnecessary and makes me feel sick for the families of the deceased. My prayers are with you. So selfish and senseless for this to happen because someone decided to drink and drive. Doesn’t matter what kind of family he comes from he still stole 2 young lives because of HIS poor, selfish decisions. Hope he pays for his crimes.

  66. Kaitlyn on January 12th, 2019 12:27 pm

I think that it doesn’t matter what kind of family he came from. Two innocent people are gone because of his poor selfish decisions. I cannot believe he has a bond. What kind of sense does that make that you give a man that clearly doesn’t care how he drives the ability to leave jail and possibly do it again. The justice system sucks. I hope he goes away for the rest of his life.

  67. Nicole on January 12th, 2019 12:22 pm

This is so very sad. Two young lives taken way too soon because of alcohol! I agree with Charlotte, we definitely need stricter punishments for drunk driving. This is coming from someone who has had a DUI. I received my Dui in 2007 and I am so thankful that I did. I wish it had happened years sooner. Unfortunately, not everyone learns from their 1st one and that is truly heartbreaking. The victim’s awareness class you have to take is life changing. I believe that everyone who is turning 21 should be required to take this class prior to their birthday or they lose their license. Maybe if they are able to see the devastation that is left for the families of drunk driving victims and actually meet someone who is currently serving a 40 year sentence in prison for taking two teenage girl’s lives they will think twice before getting behind the wheel. So sorry for the families of the two victims. My prayers are with you all!

  68. Calvinqualls on January 12th, 2019 12:18 pm

Are you kidding me this guy driving drunk I assume speeding took two lives as a matter of fact this kid play football he’s on my son’s basketball team has a 4.5. Grade average and he an his sister life was taken because he decided to drive drunk and it’s an insult for him to have a 25.000 bond shouldn’t be no bond justice in this case is no justice

Maybe some of you need to go look at the scene! He lost control of his car way before he ever hit the other car. He started losing control of his car back in front of the cemetery. This isn’t the first time this hell raiser has been in trouble but I bet it’s his last. I pray for the family/families that lost two lives. My cousin was hit and killed in almost this exact same spot in March of last year. He was walking and got hit. People need to open their eyes and pay attention! God bless you McCoy and Banks family. You will be in my prayers!

The fact that the drunk comes from a good God fearing family is a moot point -This drunk got behind the wheel and killed two people and it only drives home the fact that his selfish, stupid act shows he doesn’t care about his own flesh and blood either.

My heart goes out to the families of all involved. My heart is breaking for the families of the fatalities. The guy that was drinking has ruined not only his life but the lives of so many others. The mug shot shown was from 2018. I have to wonder what he did that time. It’s just so heartbreaking. Don’t give them a slap on the wrist 2 or 3 times. Not even one time. Make them suffer the first time so maybe they will think before drinking and driving again.

He was arrested for 2 DUI manslaughter which he could face up to 20 years in prison. I know someone who was arrested for 1 DUI manslaughter and had to do 10 years in prison. The mugshot was old from October 2018, that’s what the article says. I’m sure he wasn’t smiling when he was arrested on these recent charges. His family needs prayers as well as his victims families. He will deal with the guilt of taking those innocent lives for as long as he shall live.

Lock this killer up and throw away the key…………. Forever

Andrew although it will never change the outcome of this tragedy you obviously didn’t read the whole article especially the last sentence concerning the date the photo was taken.

What a shame, more needs to be done about drinking and driving. First offense should be jail time, and driver license taken away for a year.

Sean Banks was an extremely liked Varsity Basketball player, who recently made student of the month.. His sister Antoinette was one of his biggest supporters. Tate Aggie Basketball family loved them both, and they will be truly missed

So sad to hear about this. Makes no sense to me why someone would get behind the wheel after drinking.

The DUI driver comes from a very good family of Christians who have served the community as good neighbors for many many years. Sad that this young man made the terrible decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. Neither of the families deserve this.

Two young people are dead because someone decided to drink and drive. This makes me sick. There needs to be tougher laws on drunk drivers. Giving them two or three slaps on the wrist, then turning them loose to do the same thing again, more then likely injuring someone, or worse yet killed. First time offenders should have to pay a five thousand dollar fee, six months in jail. Second time, life. I sound cold and harsh, but I’ve had friends and family members died from these drunk drivers that have been caught, and let loose. Yeah, they can take their license, but that does not stop them from driving. The only way to stop them from driving is to lock their butts up. My prayers go out to the family that lost their loved ones.

Prayers for all involved. While I agree that on any road speed can be a factor in accidents and while it may have been a contributing factor on this one, this article says the offender was arrested on a DUI. So this wreck was caused by alcohol. I think a better idea would be for everyone to quit drinking any amount of alcohol and then getting behind the wheel of any vehicle.

Prayers to the family of the people that passed away.

  83. Andrew on January 12th, 2019 10:40 am

Is it just me or does it tick anyone else off when you see mugshots and they’re smiling. Like you just took two lives and you don’t even care. Guess someone never learned the choices have consequences lesson.

  84. Just Saying on January 12th, 2019 10:37 am

Speed wasn’t exactly the issue here, Dale. It doesn’t matter if you’re parked when another vehicle comes from where it SHOULD be and goes where it SHOULDN’T be and rams into your vehicle head on! This was alcohol, plain and simple.

    Praying for the victims families.

They didn’t have an accident because they were going to fast. They had an accident because an idiot drove drunk and killed two innocent people. So sorry for these families.

  86. McNabb on January 12th, 2019 10:32 am

Another drunk kills people and shatters the lives of so many others – even imprisonment for the rest of your life wont undo the damage you have done to the families that have to go on now without their loved ones…
