Woman Pleads For Return Of Service Dog Believed To Be Stolen

December 18, 2018

A Cottage Hill woman is pleading for the return of a service dog believed to be stolen.

Deborah Daugherty says her Great Dane named Daman was a therapy dog in training, and he was taken from her yard on Handy Road on Monday.

“I had a back surgery that went bad. Slowly but surely he has helped me walk again,” she said. He was more of a couch potato, someone had to open the gate and grab him.”

The theft, she said, has been reported to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

“I miss him, you know,’ Daugherty said, her voice breaking. “I just want him back.”

Anyone that has any information about Daman should call the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 436-9620 or Daugherty at (850) 982-4020.

I hope your special pup finds his way home and those who are responsible held as such. I would be lost without my service dog karma (also a great Dane).

Jodie, it was a service dog in training. He is registered as such. Hope this clears up the confusion.

Such a sad situation. This story brings tears to my eyes. I can’t show this to my wife as she will breakdown. Thieves are heartless and useless people.

I pray this lady gets her dog back and please put locks and chains on your gates. Stay outside with the dog will be the best or install a wireless security camera. You only need one. Make it difficult for thieves to steal anything.

Heard these thieves called pooch poachers and they are out around Christmas. These dogs have people who love them. Take the dog home!

Ok….was it a Service Dog or Therapy Dog. There’s a BIG difference! Although it really doesn’t matter…it was a special someone’s dog that was stolen from someone that really needed it. If it was a Service Dog other charges can be filed. It’s a crime, in Florida, to disrupt/disturb a Service Dog.
