One Injured In Highway 29 Wreck

December 13, 2018

One person was injured in a two vehicle accident Wednesday evening on Highway 29 at Archer Road. The driver of a car apparently rear-ended a pickup truck and trailer. The trailer was  loaded with a tractor. The 5:50 p.m. crash is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.  NorthEscambia.com photos by Kristi Barbour, click to enlarge.

Really, Really? He might have lights, but the law says they must be on the rear of the trailer. These lights are not on the rear of the unit. They are on what would be the rear of the trailer, but this has a ramp that is in all actuality being used as an extension. The lights should be on the very rear of the unpowered towed vehicle. The width of the load on the ramp, not only blocks the truck’s lights but could cause confusion as to where the trailer’s lights are. I am not sure what you mean by your trailer has good breaks on it. But, nevertheless, we were discussing trailer brakes. Your trailer might have a 10,000 pound rating. Once again, the weight limit before you are required to have brakes on the tow and towed vehicle with controls inside the tow vehicle , plus a breakaway device to apply the towed vehicle’s brakes, is 3000 pounds. That is regardless of the trailer’s weight capacity. I would be surprised if any of the scrappers hauling junk cars would pass inspection.

Why in the world should the person towing the trailer need to shoulder ANY liability for someone running in to him from behind unless he had no lights? As far as the “overloaded” trailer mentioned, I have a trailer about that length and built very similar AND it has a 10,000 pound capacity. Also has good breaks and plenty of lights. No reason for anyone to hit me from behind but people love to get right up under the back of my trailer in traffic. If the person who ran into this guy had left plenty of room this accident would not have happened, lights or no lights. Put the phone down, pay attention……….pretty easy to do!

Wow another of many accidents at Archer and 29. I wonder why they did not put in a turning lane for Archer going North when they had a chance on the last resurfacing project.? To many turn arounds without turn off on 29 above 9 mile road.

Fred, your comment about the trailer’s lighting made me wonder about it also. So I looked up the requirements in Florida for towed trailers. I will post the web site below. But after reading the regulations, I am concerned about are we being protected from some of these over loaded, over width, over length trailers. Many of them you see hauling old junkers to the scrap yards exceed the weight limit of 3,000 pounds that requires separate brakes for the trailer with breakaway braking capabilities. The above tractor with the disc probably is over 3,000 lbs. They also must carry separate insurance for the tow vehicle and the towed vehicle. Commercial Tow trucks must carry special insurance, so should all vehicles towing trailers. Fred, your comment about the trailer’s lighting made me wonder about it also. Interesting to note the taillights are well forward of the end of the trailer, and there are no reflective markings on the back end where the other car struck it. In the dark, it would be easy to misjudge where the end of the trailer is. I think the trailer owner has some contributory negligence in this accident.
