Century’s Failing Gas Dept. Looks To Increase Declining Prison Revenue; FDC Took Cost-Cutting Measures
November 1, 2018
Century is setting its sights on the local prison to help the gas department’s continued financial slide.
According to a document created by town account Robert Hudson, the natural gas bill for the Century Correctional Institution has dropped by about one-third when analyzing each August and September since 2014. In 2014, Century Correctional’s bills for August and September totaled $18,966. That decreased to $14,354 in 2016 and to $6,547 by 2018.
Century Gas Superintendent Wally Kellett said the prison’s natural gas meter is 18-years old and was “sticking” and not operating properly He said the meter was temporarily repaired and new meter has been ordered to stop revenue losses.
NorthEscambia.com reached out to the Florida Department of Corrections to see if there might by any other reason CCI’s natural gas bills dropped by such a large percentage since 2014.
FDC Communications Director Michelle Glady said the facility has actually taken several steps to decrease natural gas use.
“We converted the laundry operation from steam-powered to direct gas dryers. Century used to have a large steam boiler that consumed a lot of natural gas, but the new direct-fired gas dryers are more energy efficient. Additionally, several hot water heaters have been upgraded to high efficiency models,” Glady said.
The Century Gas Department lost $165,181 during last fiscal year ending September 30.

I think Escambia County should fund the town of Century in its entirety (100%). Then we can continue to track the money and see what the town of Century is all about. I enjoy reading all the articles about the town of Century on NorthEscambia.com and I do not want to see it stop. The Town of Century is corrupt, backward, bad stewards of funds and should be dissolved. But hey, it’s only taxpayers dollars. Let’s get as much entertainment and fun out of this situation as we can. If you are not going to shut down a corrupt Town of Century, then, lets fully fund it and let the wackiness begin and we can all have a good laugh!!!
Town of Century should be all or nothing!!!
Yes Century prison can help all of Florida our..lock up these misfits in a nice warm Landry room for a few years for being the most proactive circus…wait..might not be able to lock up the bunch of crooks…that “sovereign” card they are trying to play …oh heck..lock them up..throw away the key…
Still looking for freezing weather.
REGARDING:
“Why does Century exist as a State Chartered Town? Under current Fl. law, Century could not even be considered for a charter”
It does exist because it did exist. South Flomaton was chartered under different rules, changed its name to Century to get those others to agree to be annexed. This was done because federal monies would be available if they did.
Should it continue to exist? Maybe so, maybe no. It’s up to them (and their trusting creditors).
Oh, and the saw blade was fabricated at the prison as I recall as a piece of art honoring Century’s history. We in the Town of Bluff Springs don’t particularly care.
David for wise decisions
Century depends upon the STATE Prison to boost their Natural Gas Income?
Century wants the State Prison to pay HIGHER Gas Bills?
Century, just WHO do YOU think pays for the State Prison to pay for its gas bills?
WE THE TAXPAYERS.
Sometimes, Honest to Goodness and all the Stars Above it seems the folks running Century are sniffing too much gas themselves.
Lord Save Us from Shoddy Run Politics and Poor Management and it doesn’t make a Hoot in the Holler the color of your skin, Messed UP is Messed UP.
When your are flat broke you start shaking out every pocket and breaking open every piggie bank. 18 y/o meters? Great job by Century in keeping up with the times. The giant sawblade as you enter the town speaks volumes about how out of touch Century is with today.
What “M” in Bratt has related is just the more reasons to have a consolidated government for the county. Not to worry about Pensacola proper controlling the rest of us…the county has more voters than the city. Compromise, compromise and consolidate for a more efficient and less duplication of services throughout our county.
Bravo to the prison for cutting their costs.
I hope this gas dept fiasco will teach the importance of maintenance. A plan should be made to check/test all meters at least once every quarter and not wait 18 years.
M in Bratt, don’t forget the mayor wouldn’t get a pay check .
12 thousand dollar drop in the monthly gas bill. Thumbs up to the state on saving gas, but there is a meter problem. Eighteen year old meter tells me everything I need to know about the operation of the gas company.
Why does Century exist as a State Chartered Town? Under current Fl. law, Century could not even be considered for a charter for several reasons. Of all the communities in Escambia County; Ferry Pass, Cantonment, Warrington etc, the City of Pensacola is the only other chartered city or town. All the services which Century attempts to provide are duplications of services that could be more efficiently handled by other entities;
1. Garbage is already contracted out, and could be handled by ECUA
2. Police, Fire, and the library are already handled by the county
3. Pensacola Energy has comparable rates, and makes money rather than loses on gas.
4. Escambia County Parks seems to have more activities, and be well run.
Looks like the only thing Century would lose by disbanding as a chartered town is the ability of the Town Council to meet and loan each other money, and otherwise mismanage the tax and rate payers money.
Let’s see how this one works out; We have a very large water, gas, and sewer customer that installs energy saving features to be pro active in the global warming fight. They now use considerably less gas, so we have to charge them more.
We have another large customer that depended on the town’s word on fees when they were planning their project, only to find that the town’s word is no good, and now they want to charge them considerably more.
Does anybody else see the pattern of robbing large customers and corporations because you can’t manage your money? All this would be very discouraging to any potential investors that wanted to add business and jobs in Century
