New FDLE App Allows Searches For Registered Sex Offenders Near You

October 31, 2018

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has launced a new mobile app to see where sexual offenders have registered a residential address in Florida.  The “Search Sexual Offenders and Predators” button is one of seven FDLE public services featured in the new app.

(The example maps below are from the app, showing sexual offenders within two miles of Bratt, Jim Allen and Molino Park elementary schools.)

“I can’t think of a better time to launch this app,” said FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen.  “I hope all parents will download this before going trick or treating and then use it often to help keep their families safe or to report suspicious activity.”

The app also allows users to search active AMBER, Missing Child and Silver Alerts, search wanted persons or stolen vehicle and gun information, search unsolved cases in Florida, and submit a tip about suspicious activity.

The FDLE App is available for download free of charge in the Google Play store and the Apple App Store. Search for “FDLE Mobile App” in the Google Play Store or for “FDLE” in the Apple App Store.

To use the interactive map to display the registered residential addresses of sexual offenders and predators, location services on the mobile phone must be turned on.  However, all other sections of the app still work even if location services are not turned on.

The FDLE mobile app does not track a user’s location or store personal information.  FDLE noted it should never be used as an emergency app because it is not monitored 24/7.

Considering the recividism rate of Registered Sex Offenders returning to prison due to conviction of another sex based crime has been proven through numerous studies to be about 5%, what the FDLE really needs is a link showing where the people who have not yet committed a crime of this nature, or have but yet to be caught, live.

While they are at it, perhaps the FDLE could link where all the DUI people live, considering on Halloween a child has a scientifically proven increase in probability of being struck by a drunk driver while studies show no increase, or decrease, in sexual crimes.

Perhaps we need a link showing where every person of all given crimes live who have served their time? I mean do you really want to live next door to a murderer or someone who has gone to prison for breaking into houses or stealing cars at gunpoint.

All of this is nothing more than political pandering that makes neither you, nor your children, one bit more or less save. Just something to spend tax dollars on that has been repeatedly shown to make not one bit of difference. But let’s not let those facts get in the way.
