Jay Road Crash Claims Life Of 6-Year Old, Injures Three Others

October 19, 2018

A single vehicle crash claimed the life of a 6-year old Jay Elementary School first grader Thursday afternoon and injured three others near the Alabama/Florida state line in Escambia County, AL.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the six-year old was killed when the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox she was riding in left the roadway and struck a tree. She was pronounced deceased on scene.

The driver, Delaney Hammac, age 18 of Panama City, was injured and transported to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, and two other children were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital.

The crash occurred on Jay Road near Polk Road, about a mile north of the state line.

According to a phone alert to Jay Elementary School parents, the 6-year old was a first grade student at the school. Grief counselors were on hand Friday for students and staff.

Alabama State Troopers are continuing their investigation and have not released the names of the young victims or other information.

I have tears flowing down my cheeks as I can only pray that God will grace this family with strength, my granddaughter is the same age, and I am overwhelmed and cannot even imagine the pain for the family, her teachers, and classmates. Some days are just too hard.
