Yesterday Mr. Thomas, when the storm hadn’t hit by 1:00 PM as forecasted school should have been cancelled for today. The storm wasn’t just going away. It was just taking longer to get here. No child should have been on a school bus in the weather conditions that were taking place this morning. Common sense Mr. Thomas, plain common sense! As my father use to say, “use the brain God gave you”!

Sure, it sucks we are having to go back to school today with the weather as cappy as it is. That being said when you’re children grow up their bosses aren’t ganna care if it’s storming like this.as for those who are worried about their high school kids driving in the rain…they’ll have to do it eventually. I have only drove in the rain once or twice before today (and those times it was light rain), but I had to go to class today because college doesn’t care if it’s raining. If you don’t let then drive in the rain now they never will and it is ganna be harder for them later in life.

I am very disappointed in Santa Rosa County school board. We are getting all the warnings and floods, and yet you want school in session. You are punishing students with being unexcused for bad weather conditions. If the absence is not excused students cant make up their work so they are going for the sake of there education. Your asking high school students who just started driving to drive to school on slick an flooded roads with the little experience they have. Congratulations you got what you wanted! You wanted your students to go to school if they get hurt because you refused to cancel it should be on you to take care of it. This was a very bad decision, hope you can find a way to fix it.

I’m sorry, but this is not Malcom Thomas’ fault!! He made the best decision at that time based on the information he had! And where did he get that information? From our so called Weather Channel ‘experts’…who has failed to deliver correct data and information to us (more than once). They too, don’t have all the answers for sure, but please stop blaming one man for this! He’s already stated that parents who kept their kids home will have excused absences. Sometimes, we as parents need to take the responsibility and stop blaming others! Goodness, gracious!!!

Yes a mistake was made most likely based on the weather reports that the storm was fast moving and would be over quickly but it wasn’t. But, there is a pretty simple solution. If you don’t feel safe sending your child to school, Don’t. Contact the teacher (pretty much all of them have social media sites for this purpose, get the lesson plan if possible. Let them work on it at home. One day missed isn’t gonna ruin their school career and pretty sure that any absence on this particular day will be marked excused due to weather.

    @Anne

No, we don’t “skip work” when it’s “raining out”.
However, it’s not only the job of the school district to educate our children, but also to keep them safe.

When you ask high school kids to drive to school and buses to run their routes in unsafe road conditions, then you’re not keeping kids safe but rather putting their safety at risk.

Yesterday they closed schools in an “abundance of caution”, to quote Mr. Thomas. But as @ensley boy said, “where’s all that caution today?”.

Very poor decision by the school district.

I agree. Rain…flooding. Best idea to stay off the roads if you can. However our school superintendent makes a BAD call like this. Not safe for buses or kids!!! What are they thinking. If I had kids they would be at home also. Unbelievable. Mobile and Mississippi schools are closed and WE are the ones getting the flooding rains. Makes no sense. Take a look outside Mr Thomas or watch the weather channel!

They should have canceled school today my 3 elementary kids are home with me out of this weather. I’m not going to send them out in the rain to wait on the bus and I’m definitely ain’t going to send them out on these dangerous roads. I’m not risking their lives for a school day that should have been canceled.

My son keeps telling me things are different now. They sure are! School is a students’ job, We don’t just skip work because it is raining out.

  10. Northview dad on September 5th, 2018 10:32 am

Amen!! My daughter said that she had to drive 25 this morning from Molino to Northview because the rain was so bad she couldn’t see and the roads were ponding real bad. We’ve got some very dumb people running the show around here.

  11. ensley boy on September 5th, 2018 10:05 am

Roads flooded ,traffic lights out, heavy rain, wheres all that caution now.

  12. Andrew on September 5th, 2018 9:52 am

What is wrong with them they are sending students one of which i am they cant make choices to save their life were going die in this weather.

  13. Brattmom on September 5th, 2018 9:43 am

I thought surely they would call off all Escambia Florida sessions for today. Especially after I had to get out in this mess last night. I think somebody has lost their mind if they think the roads are safe now! Needless to say, MY 1ST GRADER IS HERE AT HOME!! I was not gonna take her and certainly not make her stand in the rain to catch a bus!! STUPID..!

  14. Parent on September 5th, 2018 9:34 am

Absolutely no way school should be in session today.
The road conditions are unsafe for buses to run.
    I kept my child home.

Not sure why school was canceled yesterday when the storm was miles offshore rather than today when it’s passing through (just as the forecast said it would on Monday).

Terrible decision and poor leadership on your part Mr. Thomas.

  15. POparent on September 5th, 2018 9:30 am

Cannot believe that our kids had to go to school today in this CRAZY weather…I think they should be excused if the parents feel it is unsafe and keep them at home. What is our superintendent (or more like our not-so superintendent) thinking!!! Wow!!! Way to go–(said sarcastically!)

  16. Booger Johnson on September 5th, 2018 9:12 am

I have to agree with the prior comments!

  17. Dailynewsreader on September 5th, 2018 8:45 am

This weather is horrible i feel bad for all of the young kids that have to go to school and outside in this weather because of a stupid mistake the school district made, highschoolers drive to school and the school district is putting those kids in danger by sending them out on the road in this weather.

  18. Stupid Malcom on September 5th, 2018 8:33 am

Malcom has lost his mind what a joke of a superintendent

  19. wmr on September 5th, 2018 6:40 am

Just my opinion, but the kids should have been out of school today instead of yesterday. I don’t know why, but they always seem to get it wrong when it comes to making these decisions.

  20. Mommaof2 on September 5th, 2018 6:18 am

Ain’t no way I send my child out in this…. They should of went yesterday and cancelled today!!! Malcom is tripping!
