Escambia Man Charged With DUI Manslaughter After Morning Crash

August 4, 2018

An Escambia County man is facing DUI manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter charges after a Saturday morning crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 25-year old Blake J. Shull of Pensacola was westbound on West Michigan Avenue in a 2002 Saturn about 2 a.m. when he rear-ended a 2000 Ford Mustang driven by 60-year old Dean E. Moyster of Pensacola.

The collision caused Moyster’s car to rotate and collide with a utility light support. Shull’s vehicle continued westbound, veered onto the shoulder and hit a utility light support and a Tom Thumb sign.

Moyster was pronounced deceased from his injuries. Shull was treated and released at Sacred Heart Hospital for minor injuries.

Shull was booked into the Escambia County Jail without bond for DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and driving while license is suspended.

    Update;
    His is “supposed” to be sentenced today. He “had” a plea agreement in place however Shull’s lawyer pulled a fast one and everyone is waiting on today. Hopefully , he’ll get the original 35 years that was recommended.

    I served with Dean years ago in Sigonella. He was the type of person that in a good way that you can never forget.
    My most senere condolences and prayers are with his family and closest friends who now have to deal with such a loss of a good and decent man like Dean.

    Just Saying…the new ignition locks (for a few years now) have safeguards on them now. They are equipped with a camera, so each time you blow, it snaps a picture so no one can blow in it for them anymore. They caught on to that scam. I have a friend (who definitely learned his lesson) and its impossible to fool the ignition lock now…which of course is a good thing.

    @RETIRED–Agree on the gloves. For every seemingly “foolproof” solution, there is always someone out there with a way to beat it. I am surprised (someone probably already working on it), that someone hasn’t already come up with a type of face mask that would filter out any trace alcohol, to defeat the blow into ignition lockout system.

    I will never understand why one drunk on the road never hits another drunk on the road. It is always an innocent driver who is taken from loved ones.

    @GrandLocust,

    Ignition locks do no good. The drunk just pays some young kid to blow in it for them. I’ve seen it happen several times. They pay some idiot teenager to ride around with them and blow whenever they start the car. If you REALLY want to stop it, put sensors in the steering wheel that detect the presence of alcohol in their hands. They have to have their hands on the wheel to drive. It works. The technology is out there. It just needs to be implemented in ALL cars manufactured and court ordered to be installed on any vehicles belonging to someone convicted of DUI.

    There’s no telling how many are out there right now driving on suspended license’s and how many everyday that drink and get behind the wheel. This drunk with no respect for the law will get his just due.

    Prayers to the family for their loss. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. America has had the technology for 20 years of tried and true ignition interlocks which do not allow an impaired person to start their car. Filling our jails with more dopes and mopes does not bring back those who are lost. We can put a two hundred dollar stereo with bluetooth option in a new car, yet the Alcohol industry and restaurant industry has fought the technology to stop impaired drivers being implemented because folks would not spend enough money if they knew they could not get home drunk. No simple answers but 10 thousand lives a year could be saved for the cost of putting bluetooth in your car. My wife lost her cousin to a drunk driver in 1985 and the alcohol industry still will not allow this problem to be solved. You get angry at first, then you start thinking about how many societal resources are wasted by impaired drivers, and you begin to lose hope as more police, court personnel, jail personnel, and probation folks bankrupt taxpayers while their families get slaughtered.

    Everyone thinks it won’t happen to them, until it does. He will suffer the consequences of his behavior for the rest of his life, but at least he still has his life. It’s a no win situation for everyone. Condolences to the Moyster family and prayers for everyone related to both parties. It affects more than just the 2 people involved, it has a ripple effect.
