Century Eliminates Position To Provide Four Other Employees With Raises

August 21, 2018

The Century Town Council voted Monday night to eliminate a position from their water and sewer department in order to provide raises for four other department employees.

Century Water Superintendent Alicia Jernigan said that after eliminating the vacant position and giving the raises, the town will still save about $25,000 per year in salary and benefit costs.

The four water department employees will receive raises ranging from $1.30 to $2.80 per hour.

Jernigan said the raises bring her department’s salaries in line with other town employees. She said that the department will be able to operate efficiently with one less employee.

Eliminate the rest of the Town Council and give all the citizens of Century a raise.

    Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Deciples (disciples) and apostles walk hand in hand; in Century.

The ‘officials’ in Century need adult supervision.

Probably tabby they have seen the rest of the stories about the council’s decision making process and ran. But this does seem like a win for the employees so good job hope so maybe.

They could do the very same thing at many businesses. My husband states that at his job, with a crew of three the top two guys will actually get the same job done “faster” without the third guy. And the third guy makes $13-14/hr. He says he does less work with the third guy but would much rather work harder for splitting the third guys pay three ways, the top two and the company all get a third. When hired at his last employer, he found a way to increase production by a proven 50% by himself however, bosses were reluctant to get rid of anyone so he just went with the flow and ultimately resigned. Can anyone answer why a company wouldn’t want to do the same as Century ?

Here lately I visit this Northescambia page just to read the comic section of Century.

@nod it really is quite simple. You just take the total amount the town would spend on that employees salary plus benefits and subtract the amount of the raises. By my calculations the raises total of about $16,600 per year. so 16600 +25000 = 41600. This means that employee would have made 41600 in salary and benefits. Should I break it down further?

Boy oh Boy… What sense does this make? You agree to hire “NEW” employees in at a higher rate that what some of your current employees make…Really council…Your just as guilty as the fingers you point. You all need to be fired or required to go back to Coach Shepherds Economics Class or to Ms Haley’s general Math class. You all are ridiculous with the decisions you “all” are making. And you are worried about a budget, huhh. Right…

Only in government would we see an organization giving pay raises while losing money.

They were paying nothing for a vacant position but if they get rid of that position and give people more money they’re going to save $25,000 a year. that makes a lot of sense to me. Watch out Peter they’re paying Paul. But wait Paul is broke

Smart move….instead of filling a position they didn’t need they decided to give the water department a raise and save money. Ms. Jernigan has the right idea. Thank you!

@shay if the position is already in the budget then yes, not hiring that position and splitting that pay among the others will still cost less than actually putting another employee on the payroll.

How does getting rid of a non existent (vacant) employee get them the money they need to give to the others? If I were an employee or a citizen of Century I’d be very afraid. The people running this city don’t have a clue what they are doing, which is proven everyday in the headlines here on northescambia
