Six Train Cars Derail In Escambia County, AL (With Photo Gallery)
July 11, 2018
Six cars of a CSX freight train derailed Wednesday alongside Highway 31 in Wawbeek east of Atmore, AL.
Four hopper cars containing plastic pellets and two containing large rolls of paper derailed. Three cars completely left the tracks and overturned, including one that stopped just short of entering a travel lane of Highway 31. There were no injuries.
The train was eastbound toward Flomaton and was over two miles long, officials said. The cars that derailed were just over a mile from the front of the train.
Highway 31 was closed from Canoe, AL, to Sardis Church Road. The roadway was reopened Thursday afternoon.
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

This is exactly why the X’s are at the guard rails on every road. You can blow your horn and shake your fist and pull right up to the guard rail. Good luck to you when those train cars derail!
With a 2 mile long train, there is NO controlling the rearend of the train or the middle of it for that matter. But this is CSX’s new plan. Take 3 regular trains and make 1 super train. Less manpower and minimal engines usage. And the sad part is this was actually a smaller train, my longest one through there was over 3 miles long
Gov Ivey did the right thing by blocking Amtrack from coming into this area. As with most roads in the Atmore area the tracks are in poor condition.
I hope a thorough investigation is made. This deeply concerns me.
Omg! Glad there were no injuries…
