Century Splash Pad Bathrooms Closed Due To Vandalism

July 23, 2018

The Town of Century has closed the bathrooms at the Showalter Park splash pad due to vandalism, unless some has paid to rent the adjacent pavilion.

“Due to recent acts of vandalism, restrooms will only be unlocked during splash pad and pavillion (sic) rentals,” a posted notice stated.

The splash pad restroom was closed after vandalim inside the facility, but that did not stop the vandals from striking outside.

Friday afternoon, children were playing on the splash pad and under the pavilion. Clearly visible just feet away was spray-painted graffiti with an image so vulgar we can’t show it here.

Century Mayor Henry Hawkins has asked the town council for a camera system to monitor and record at Showalter Park and other town properties. So far, approval has not been granted. Vandals have also hit Anthony Pleasant Park and other public properties in the Century area.

Where I currently live, we have a beautiful green space and walking track with nice, clean restrooms. They are kept clean by utilizing an electronic lock and key fob system. Residents who wish to have access, register and pay a $20 per year fee to rent a key fob which unlocks the restroom door. It has been very successful here and has kept vandals away.

The Bathroom WAS NOT built with Grant Money, The town employees work very hard to keep everything maintained and usable, but When your 5 year old goes into the bathroom and some sad adult has decided to Poop on the floor and smear it on the walls , (after they were cleaned that Morning )and catching the culprits in the act is Near impossible, what other choice Does the Town have?
I agree it’s a shame that Century can’t Have anything nice , however ,If some of the Wonderful citizens of our sweet little town would like to volunteer to go clean these Bathrooms after Someone’s vandalized, I’m quite sure the Town won’t object…
I have No problem With Renting the pavilion with the understanding the bathroom will be my responsibility while I use it .. Its called carrying your responsibility.. It would be FANTASTIC if others would do more of this instead of complaining .

Somebody took the time to print up the bathroom is closed, but did not have the time to pick up an inexpensive video security system. There are a couple ways to do this. First, after the video is installed simply install ring doorbells which allow somebody during regular business hours to unlock the door remotely from their desk while doing their job. Second, install the remote door locks and issue passes for a small fee to use splash park facilities like the bathroom, and that person who wants to open the bathroom simply scans his season pass which allows the photo and the card information to go to an access data base or excel spread sheet capturing the time, date, photo, and season pass information in the data base.

I cleaned bathrooms when I got a work permit to allow me to work at 15. Public bathrooms can get nasty unless you train staff to keep them immaculate and stocked. It is a training issue, and yes it could get bad, but my job was to make sure the public had a bathroom despite human failings. Government do your job.

    @ M in Bratt,
You’re not looking to the county to engineer and construct something smart are you.
If you are, look at the gates around the walking trail at the County Extention Service.. Gates with no fences. Not to mention the placement of the benches around the trail.
Drive on to the east on Nine and1/2 mile road and look at the placement of the sidewalk, too close to the road. I could go on but everyone gets the idea.

You know why don’t people volunteer to clean the bathrooms after someone has craped all over the floors and side of toilet and wall see if your opinion changes then because that is what’s happening I don’t blame the town for closing down the bathrooms my god look at the big picture

Let’s see; we have no restrooms available so we go in the bushes or worse, on the splash pad. This could turn this place into a health dept. nightmare.

First they built it without any consideration for how to supply water for it. Now the restrooms are a problem. It just seems like some members of the clown show would have thought through some of this BEFORE they built it. Sometimes FREE stuff isn’t really FREE.

Century, where the people destroy what others work so hard to build.

Actually Proudarmyparent is probably correct. As I recall, the splash pad was paid for by federal grant and there are probably compliance requirements that Century is violating by closing the bathrooms.

The restroom are there for your convenience. There is no law requiring them to be open. If people think the splash pad should not be without a restroom, then maybe it is time to shut down the splash pad. Once again, a good idea ruined by bad people.

Harbor Freight has 2 video devices under $300…one with 2 cameras expandable to 4 and one with 4 cameras expandable to 8. Worse case scenario, take up a collection for one and start recording these animals.

People like this, ruin everything for everyone. This is why no one can have anything…

  17. ProudArmyParent on July 23rd, 2018 2:01 am

Wasn’t the Splash Pad paid for with a Federal Grant? Was the bathroom paid for with that same grant? If so I would think that bathrooms would have to be open when the Splash Pad is.
