Driver Uninjured In Sunday Night Cantonment Accident

A driver refused medical treatment after a single vehicle rollover crash Sunday in Cantonment. The accident occurred about 9:20 p.m. in the 1000 block of South County Road 97, near Tobias Road. Century Historical Board Approves Replacement Of Tornado Damaged Mobile Home

The Century Historic Preservation Board has approved the replacement of a tornado damaged 1964 mobile home located within the Alger Sullivan Historical District.
The current residence at 581 Church Street is actually two mobile homes in an “L” shape, and one was damaged by a February 2016 EF-.3 tornado that struck the town.
The replacement will be funded by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) that was received by the Town of Century for tornado recovery. The new home will have two bedrooms and two bathrooms and will be handicap accessible.

Wahoos Drop Third Straight

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos lost5-4 to Chattanooga Sunday.
For the third straight game the Blue Wahoos had a late-game threat, and for the third straight game, they came up empty.
The Blue Wahoos played catchup for a majority of Sunday’s finale and left the tying run in scoring position in the ninth to lose their second-straight series to open the season.
Wyatt Strahan (L, 1-1) was roughed up in his second start and Lookouts starter Kohl Stewart (W, 2-0) briefly flirted with a perfect game.
In Sunday’s matinee, Chattanooga scored first for the first time in the series by cashing in on an error by Gavin LaValley combined with an RBI-single by T.J. White.
White wasn’t done there, because when he came to the plate in the third inning with a man out, he crushed his second homer of the year to make it 3-0. White finished the game with three of Chattanooga’s five RBIs. Zander Wiel also had a big day at the plate going 3-for-4 and getting hit by a Strahan pitch.
Meanwhile, Stewart was tremendous to open the game for the Lookouts. He retired the first 13 Blue Wahoos he faced before Josh VanMeter walked for the Wahoos’ first baserunner. Aristides Aquino ended the no-hitter bid on the next pitch when he roped a double into left to put to men in scoring position. The Wahoos would only settle for one run in the fifth thanks to Brian O’Grady’s RBI groundout.
Pensacola rallied for two more in the sixth when Nick Longhi homered off Stewart to score Shed Long and make it a one-run game. Again, the Wahoos had the tying run in scoring position but stranded him there when Aquino ended the inning with a flyout.
Ryan Walker’s eighth-inning home run proved to be a massive insurance run because in the bottom of the eighth, Long and Longhi opened the frame with singles and then advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. LaValley hit a sac fly to make it 5-4 and Longhi was at third base with only one out in the inning; however, Gabby Guerrero and VanMeter were both retired to end the threat.
The Wahoos made one final push in the ninth when Aquino led off the inning of the ninth with a double, but Harper retired O’Grady and Garrett Boulware before Williams Ramirez (S, 2) struck out pinch-hitter CJ McElroy for his second save of the year.
Delton E. Boswell, Jr.

Delton E. Boswell, Jr. aka “Gene, BOS, and Junior”, 54, of Cantonment, FL, passed away on April 14, 2018. Delton was born on October 25, 1963, in Pensacola, FL, to Delton and Doris Bullard Boswell. On February 15, 1984 he married his love, Tammy Henderson Boswell, in Century, FL.
Delton worked for Escambia County for 33 years. He worked for 26 years as an officer, road corrections officer, corporal, and the administrative sergeant. He was also a Masonic Master Mason of Naval Lodge No. 24 F&A.M.
His interest included caring for others first, his work family as much as his own and working on his old car.
All that knew him loved him and was adored by him in returned.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie Boswell.
Delton is survived by his wife, Tammy; son, Jacob Boswell (Caitlyn Woodel); grandson, Brantley Boswell; parents; brother, Tommy Boswell; angel daughter, Mariah Wright; ‘lil’ brother, Patrick McGlothren; and very special friend, Kevin Barnes.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2018, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with Bro. Ted Bridges of Walnut Hill Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday night, April 18, 2018, at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Bohannon, Danny Smillie, Patrick McGlothren, Rick Tee Van, John Wayne Henderson, and Wes Henderson.
Kevin Barnes, Robert Oliver, Chad Sims, Mark Butler, Dusty Burkette, Chris Moye, Jack Martin, and Lonnie Wilson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Faith Chapel Funeral Home North is entrusted with arrangements.
Jesse Layton Stancel

Jesse Layton Stancel was born on February 5, 1924 in the tiny hamlet of Bell, Florida as the middle child of three, having an older sister and a younger brother.
Growing up during the depression, his family moved frequently among the small towns of central Florida.
At the age of 9, a bout with polio left Jesse with a permanent limp, but he continued to work hard at numerous odd jobs and in his late teens for the Civilian Conservation Corps. Unable to serve in World War II due to his polio, Jesse contributed to the war effort by learning aircraft maintenance in Jacksonville, Florida. While in Jacksonville, he met and soon married the beautiful Jannette Baker.
Jesse’s professional life began in Jacksonville also. Having secured a truck driving position with the Navy Exchange Laundry, which he was assured would never lead to advancement, he worked hard, and within a few years was promoted and transferred to Pensacola. Nearly 32 years later, he retired as Clothing Services Manager for the entire Gulf Coast region.
For 16 years of marriage, Jesse and Jannette patiently waited on the Lord for children, finally receiving the answer to their prayers with the birth of their first, and only child; a daughter, Colette, in 1959. Shortly after Colette’s birth, Jesse and Jannette began attending church, acutely aware of the need for God’s help. Over the years, Jesse heard God’s word and came under conviction of his sinfulness and his need for Jesus Christ to be his Savior. He joined his wife as a child of God and they both continued to grow in the Lord together.
After retiring from the Navy Exchange in 1983, Jesse and Jannette moved back to Jacksonville which then gave him more time to enjoy the many never-ending building projects he continually devised. He and his wife also started a ministry for the Sunday School bus workers from their church. They would serve these college kids a lunch buffet every Saturday after bus visitation. These dinners were special
times for both the college students and the Stancels.
Although Jesse was a man of few words, he spoke with wisdom and kindness. He had an unusual sense of dry humor often demonstrated by a witty remark that could take people by surprise.
After Jannette’s death in 2007, Jesse returned to Pensacola and was able to enjoy the company of Colette and many new friends. Together they would scout Saturday estate sales and yard sales and occasionally visit the Smokey Mountains. Jesse had always had excellent health other than the polio affecting his legs. He continued going strong, living for the Lord until the ripe old age of 94 years, when after a short decline he went home to see his Heavenly Father. Toward the end he frequently said, “I want to go to Heaven NOW!” Praise the Lord, Jesse is in Heaven today running on two healthy legs and enjoying the rewards of a life of integrity given in service to the Lord his Savior.
Douglas Ray Jones Jr.

Douglas Ray Jones Jr., 59, of Berrydale, Florida passed away Friday, April 13th, 2018.
He was a resident of Berrydale for 35 plus years and enjoyed working with his hands and helping other people. He was a loving son, daddy, brother, and uncle.
He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Ray Jones and sister, Jenny Lynn Jones. He is survived by his mother, Betty Jones; daughter, Johanna Jones; son, Carl Jones; sister, Julie (Al) Pierce; niece, Bambi (Derrek) Nevels and their girls Tara, Kassidy and Kinzie Nevels and nephew, Joshua Parks.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm with funeral services following at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Berrydale Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Gandy officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
At Least One Injured In Williams Ditch Road Collision

At least one person was injured in a two vehicle crash on Williams Ditch Road near Cantonment early Sunday afternoon.
The roadway was was blocked by the wreck. The 12:15 p.m. collision is under investigation the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Cantonment Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS responded.

Saturday Night Storm Causes Damage At Atmore Home

Saturday night storms destroyed a carport at an Atmore home. The carport, twisted and turned by the wind, fell onto vehicles at a home on 14th Avenue off Horner Street. There were no injuries reported. Photos for NorthEscambia.com, click to enlarge.
Teen Welcomed Home Days After Full Cardiac Arrest At School

It’s a miracle that 16-year old Deverick Williams is alive today — and a miracle that he is back home with his family.
The sophomore collapsed in cardiac arrest on to the gym floor after playing basketball last Monday at Flomaton High School.
But thanks to the response of those around him and in the community, Deverick was welcomed home Saturday evening. The Flomaton Fire Department escorted Deverick and his family from Century to their home in Flomaton where he was joined by community members, school staff and the fire department.
“If it weren’t for the school staff being trained in CPR and such a quick response from fire and EMS the chances of him surviving cardiac arrest were slim to none,” Flomaton Fire Chief Steve Stanton said.
Full Cardiac Arrest
After Deverick fell to the floor in full cardiac arrest April 9, a coached dialed 911. School nurse Nikoleda Johnson, who just happened to be in the gym, started CPR.
Flomaton Fire Chief Steve Stanton, Captain Jeremy Lee, and Flomaton Police officer Leonard Connelly arrived at Flomaton High School within about two minutes. An AED – automated external defibrillator — was used, and CPR continued. Flomaton volunteer firemen Ryan Reaves and Tyler Lambeth arrived along with Barnett Crossroads Fire Chief Ben Roe to provide relief to those that had performing CPR for several minutes. Firefighters said over 200 chest compressions and dozens of breaths were given before Williams regained a pulse.
He was still struggling to breathe as he was loaded into an Escambia County (FL) EMS unit and transported less than 100 yards away to the football field and a medical helicopter. He was flown to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola and later transferred by air to Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
