April 30, 2018
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body found near a creek in Cantonment Sunday afternoon as David Ashley Mixon, 36.
Foul play is not suspected at this time, but investigators are still waiting on the final report from the Medical Examiner’s Office, according to Maj. Andrew Hobbs, spokesperson for the ECSO.
The body was discovered by children playing in the creek found the body east of a bridge on Highway 297A near County Road 97.
A relative of the children said they returned home and told him about the discovery.
“I wasn’t sure if they were kidding or had made up a story,” he said, “so walked in the creek back down there again. That’s not something I ever want to see again.”
The body was located some 200 to 300 yards off the roadway, not directly under the bridge.

Sherry Camp & 97 Resident – please make sure you provide this information to the Sheriff’s Dept. just in case there is a connection.
97 Resident, yes, it did appear that he was wearing dark pj bottoms. I couldn’t figure out why/what he was doing just leaning against the bridge. I also sensed that he was having some difficulty especially since there weren’t any disabled vehicles.
Sherry, don’t you think that is something you should report to the police?
“baggy pajama bottoms?” Need a more accurate description. Description provided covers too many bases.
We drove by here yesterday me and my husband thought someone loss contro of their car. I found out this morning what really going on.
Sherry – We were through there around the same time. Did it look like he was wearing baggy pajama bottoms? Just curious if it was the same person we saw. I had an odd sense when I saw him.
My son was one of the founder’s . This is just so sad.
At 8:35 am, I saw a young-black male, slender build, leaning against the opposite side of the bridge and thought it strange that there was no vehicle, motorcycle, nor bike at all. He appeared to be looking at his phone.
I was there the whole time… So sad! God bless
