A Walnut Hill man was charged after allegedly pulling a loaded gun on his wife and threatening to kill her.
Cody Helton Burroughs, 29, was charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without the intent to kill.
The victim told deputies she had been in a verbal argument with Burroughs about ending their relationship when he pointed a loaded 9mm handgun at her and told her that he would kill her if she left him, according to an arrest report. She told deputies that her relationship with her husband had a been “on again off again” for last seven years, the report states.
Deputies were unable to located Burroughs when they arrived at the victim’s home on Gobbler Road, and a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Burroughs was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $15,000 bond.

@Chris I’m so glad you were there to witness him pulling said gun. That clears up all doubt.
I’m with Tim. Never aim at what you don’t intend to kill is usually the first rule most parents teach their sons and daughters. I hope the judge considers upgrading the charges at arraignment.
I know things have changed over the years…..I was in an abusive marriage for 13.5 years (YES, I stayed) we had 3 young children and my parents were deceased. I was his 3rd wife (YES, I made a bad choice) back then women didn’t have the protection and police backing like they do now BUT let me tell you…when you are controlled by another person, told you are worthless, stupid and ugly enough you start to believe these things because no one is telling you differently…, I tried to make it as public as I could. We lives near and around all of his family and his mother like this young mans’ mother didn’t believe me that her sweet son would do those things to me…twice he pulled a gun on me, NO ONE REALLY KNOWS WHAT GOES ON BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. Girls, Ladies, GET OUT. There is all kinds of help now, it may not be what you are doing, but a bad relationship can kill you – emotionally. 20 years later I live with deep depression and anxieties because of our marriage. There is someone out there that will love you and appreciate you without controlling you. Take care of your self.

@serinajohnson74: “Cody is a great guy” vs “he pointed a loaded 9mm handgun at her and told her that he would kill her if she left him.” Yea that’s totally awesome of him!
@No Excuses
Marriage is like a swinging Pendulum, It swings back and forth between Heaven and Hell.
Sometimes it gets stuck.
Looks like for the Burroughs it was stuck on the wrong side
“Yep, everyone should have a gun”
@Kate
I agree, especially Mrs. Burroughs.
There’s something about marrying the wrong person that brings out the worst in people who normally would not dream of doing the things they do in response to the significant other that gets them riled up.
Cody may be a great guy, but pulling a gun and threatening someone doesn’t help his cause.
If they can’t get along, then get a divorce and move on for Pete’s sake!

Unless someone is pointing a pistol at you.
I would certainly like to see a picture of her.
He should have cut his losses and said to her “I am going to miss you, goodbye”.
Unfortunately, this is a he said, she said thing. This is his family member. There is so much more to this than what has been reported. Cody is a great guy who unfortunately married the wrong person.Thank God for screen shots and good attorneys.
Off and on for seven years? They deserve each other.
@ Kate….If the existing laws are enforced, Mr. Burroughs will never be eligible to legally own a gun again.
If the only way you can keep a partner is to threaten to kill them if they leave, you’re pretty sad.
@Kate: how many are killed each year by drunk drivers, versus killed by handguns? Yet alcohol is easily accessible. The gun didn’t fire itself.
“first degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon WITHOUT the intent to kill” I honestly don’t get this charge. He pulled a gun, pointed it at her, and told her he would kill her if she left him. How the heck is the WITHOUT the intent to kill?
So this guy gets a 15000$ bond but the guy shooting at his neighbor only had a 1000$ one. For the same charge.
Yep, everyone should have a gun.
