March 7, 2018

[UPDATED 9:30 a.m.] A young adult male was bitten by a dog at home near McDavid Tuesday afternoon. The 19-year suffered injuries that were not considered serious.

The incident happened inside a residence in the 700 block of North Pine Barren Road, near Lambert Bridge Road. The owners of the dog reported that their  child was eating popcorn when their 2.5-year old dog began charging toward their younger child.  The victim grabbed the dog’s collar, and the dog turned and bit his arm, according to an Escambia County Animal Control report.

“The residents were laying on top of the dog that was reported as being highly aggressive when a responding deputy shot the dog in the head inside the home,” the report states.

The owners told animal control that the dog was properly vaccinated. Rabies testing was not possible due to the gunshot.

The victim refused transport by Escambia County EMS. The county report states that the parents were going to transport their son directly to the hospital.

The breed of the dog was not specified in the report.

The McDavid Station of Escambia Fire Rescue also responded to the scene.

Dogs are animals—animals do not have reasoning ability—they are impulsive–humans must protect their children and others from animals and no one really knows how an animal’s mind is working at any given time. Training helps but does not guarantee perfect results.

There are those individuals who are always throwing accusations toward others when they have absolutely no idea of the circumstances nor what they would have done in the same situation.

Thank God that this situation did not have a tragic ending for this family!

“Seems like a reckless decision”& “the cure worse than the problem”
Sir or madame , you have no idea what we just went thru mentally , emotonally or physically. As this is a brief report as to the situation that took place , if there were any way around the decision that was made to end this , I can promise you we would have. But as the mother of the 10 yr old child who was to be attacked , the mother to 19yr old for bravely & quickly grabbing this animal from his younger brother and was attacked , & yes the mother to another present the 17 yr old who wrestled & got this dog off his 19 yr old brother & ended up restraining this dog for almost 45 minutes, let me say this , and make it clear for you since you think the cure was worse, I made the decision to have the animal shot while my son was restraining him as It Was the only option we had to protect him and all of us surrounding him and trying to exhaust other options. Not to mention this was also our pet our baby we bottle fed and this is very hard and painful for my husband and our 3 children as it is . So thank you for your “just saying” what you think as you were not present for this & did not know the full details of the events thy transpired in our home , so thank you for representing the ones who will think & make ignorant & critical comments to situations as ours & im sure in your petty concern to others on north escambia… so kudos to you buddy you represented well!

Shot the dog in the head while family member laying on top of dog? This just seems like a pretty reckless decision. The cure was worse than the problem.

So true Donna, we could have been reading a totally different story with this Child. “Way to go big brother!”

Just a sad story all the way around, but I admire these folks for handling it the way they did. Big brother is a hero! Not many people would have held on to a dog after they’d been bitten.

I’m giving prayers of thanks that it wasn’t any worse than it was and that all of you will be able to put it behind you. I know that was a hard thing to have to deal with.
