Wife, Kids In Dispute Over Sen. Greg Evers Retirement Money

February 20, 2018

Nearly six months after former Sen. Greg Evers died in a traffic accident, the State Board of Administration has  filed a court document that said his wife and children are in a dispute about who should receive his state retirement money.

The State Board of Administration filed what is known as a “complaint of interpleader” in Leon County circuit court that indicated Evers’ wife, Lori Weems Evers, and his children, Jennifer J. Evers, Robert S. Evers and Stephanie E. Barlow, are battling about Evers’ Florida Investment Plan account.

Greg Evers named his wife as beneficiary but then subsequently named his children as beneficiaries, with each child to receive an equal third share, the document said. The State Board of Administration, which administers the retirement system, said it can continue to hold the money if directed by a judge while the dispute plays out.

“Each defendant (Lori Weems Evers and the children) has demanded the plaintiff (the State Board of Administration) pay the entire FRS Investment Plan account to her/them,” the document said. “Plaintiff has no interest in the FRS Investment Plan account and did not cause the conflicting claims between defendants. Plaintiff cannot determine which defendant is entitled to the FRS Investment Plan account and runs the risk of paying the account twice if it decides between defendants.”

Greg Evers, a 62-year-old Republican who served in the state House and Senate, died Aug. 22 when his truck ran off a road near his home in Baker in Northwest Florida. The court document did not indicate how much money is in the retirement account, only that the amount is more than $15,000.

I was blessed with a wonderful mother, a AWSOME adoptive dad, and my biological father who was a roll member of the creek indians.. All dead now. I GOT NOTHING!! Not either home/property, not a vehicle, nor1 red cent.. And as much as it hurt for other “family ” to take what was to be mine, I survived.so here is an idea: Kifs- grow up, get a job, and worry about building a life where u have something set aside for your own kids! Stay with 1 wife/husband, so there is no step parent for the kids to try to blame later. Or split it 4 ways and everybody be happy..Geez.. Quit acting like a bunch of vultures.

Two events in a family will bring out the best or the worse…that being a death or a divorce.
Sen. Evers was a benevolent man just trying to look out for his family.

Everyone here seems to be assuming the wife is the kids’ mother – but from the situation, doesn’t it seem more likely that she is a second wife? I see a lot of contention between kids and step parents in later remarriage situations…

Greg left her on the retirement I believe with 0 percent. The kids was named at 33 percent a piece. So u say don’t honor a dead man’s wish. I think not.

This is such nonsense! My father had 2/3 going to his wife and 1/3 going to 3 children. All three of us gave the remaining third to our stepmother who had been so good to us after the death of our own mother. This is how things should be handled.
Love is the best thing in life. Greed is evil. I wonder what Greg Evers would say if he saw this now.

This is very sad, but I believe this should be a personal matter between the family and not played out for all to see in a public manner. Most posts on here are assuming that Evers’ wife (Lori Weems Evers) is also the mother to the children listed as beneficiaries and she may very well not be their mother.

To be honest, I do not see the issue here and find it hard to believe that this would take a judge more than thirty minutes to rule with the most recent beneficiaries named by Mr. Evers. For whatever reason, it appears that Mr. Evers SUBSEQUENTLY named his three children to receive a 1/3 interest in his retirement benefits. Therefore, the case is closed, pay out 1/3 of the retirement benefit to each of the children and move on down the road.

The current Mrs. Evers is Not the mother of these kids!

“The truth will stand when the world’s on fire” Everything needs to be brought out now about the wife. EVERYTHING! Get the popcorn people. It’s time to tell the truth! You people have no idea what he dealt with.

The Bible say’s in Proverbs 22:1 “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” and in Galatians 6: 7Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

When you break the 5th commandment you are mocking God and just think what your chlldern are seeing you do to their Nana.

Good job of muddying up the family name kids it’s going to haunt you!

This could set an important precedent. I can’t tell from the article, but it seems the wife is seeking to set aside the beneficiary designation, using her status as his spouse at the time of his death, under the JTWROS laws of the state. Pay attention, those who have similar designations naming your children. You may have to take additional legal steps to ensure that your wishes are honored regarding your estate.

All my life I’ve always heard that “blood is thicker than water”. I guess being that my family never had any money to argue over ,they didn’t bother telling me money rules over blood. It’s ashamed that it always brings out the worse in people.
