Three Escambia Teens Arrested With Guns In School This School Year

February 16, 2018

Editor’s note: Escambia County School District Deputy Superintendent Norm Ross said after the original publication of this story that suspect Terrance Anton Harris, Jr. is accused of having a gun at George Stone Technical Center, not West Florida High School as originally indicated.  Both schools share the same physical address at 2400 Longleaf Drive, according to their respective websites, and the West Florida High School SRO responded to the incident.

Three Escambia County students have been arrested with guns on school campuses this school year, including a sixth grader with a loaded handgun this week at Ransom Middle School in Cantonment, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

“We take these cases very seriously and will prosecute them aggressively,” State Attorney Bill Eddins said. “We review each case individually but most of the time we seek to transfer cases like this to adult court.”

Dinari Delon Shields, 14, was arrested last October at Bellview Middle School, 16-year old Terrance Anton Harris, Jr. was arrested with a loaded gun in January at George Stone Technical Center, and Ashton Blake Ferguson-Resmondo, 13, was arrested with a loaded gun and a razor knife Tuesday at Ransom Middle.

Officials at Ransom Middle School received information from an anonymous tip that Ferguson-Resmondo was in possession of a weapon on the school campus.  He was escorted off his school bus by a school resource officer. He reached for his waistband when asked if he was in possession of any forbidden item, according to an arrest report. The sixth grader was placed in handcuffs at which time a loaded Sterling .25 caliber automatic pistol was recovered from his waistband.

He was escorted to the SRO’s office, where his bookbag was searched. The report states a razor knife and three prescription medication pills including Ziprasidone, an antipsychotic drug, and Lisdexamfetamine, a drug commonly used to treat ADHD, according to the National Institute of Health.

Ferguson-Resmondo was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice  and charged with possession of a concealed weapon, brandishing a firearm or destructive device on school grounds, and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. All of the charges are felonies, and he has been charged as a juvenile.

Court documents reveal on Monday, just a day prior to his arrest, Ferguson-Resmondo turned over two pocketknives and two .25 automatic rounds of ammunition to a teacher under the Escambia County School District’s Safe Harbor program that allows the surrender of prohibited items.

On January 25, Harris was charged with possession of a weapon on school property, a third degree felony. He will be tried as an adult.

The firearm incident began when a teacher observed Harris not doing his classwork and using his cellphone, against classroom rules. He refused to place his cellphone in a designated area, a teacher reported. Inside his backpack, officials reported finding a black handgun tightly wrapped in a pair of gym shorts.

Court documents say the backpack contained a .380 caliber Glock handgun loaded with five live rounds and a magazine.

In late November, Harris threatened several staff members at Camelot Academy, stating “I will fire you up and spark your ass”, according to court documents.

Details concerning the arrest of Shields at Bellview Middle were not immediately available. He was charged as juvenile.

Editor’s note: Escambia County School District Associate Superintendent Norm Ross says suspect Terrance Anton Harris, Jr. is accused of having a gun at George Stone Technical Center, not West Florida High School as originally indicated.  Both schools share the same physical address at 2400 Longleaf Drive, according to their respective websites, and the West Florida High School SRO responded to the incident.

Directly from drug insert placed in Prozac:

“Suicide is a known risk of depression and certain other psychiatric disorders, and these disorders themselves are the strongest predictors of suicide. There has been a long-standing concern, however, that antidepressants may have a role in inducing worsening of depression and the emergence of suicidality in certain patients during the early phases of treatment. Pooled analyses of short-term placebo-controlled trials of antidepressant drugs (SSRIs and others) showed that these drugs increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior (suicidality) in children, adolescents, and young adults (ages 18-24) with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and other psychiatric disorders.”

Not listed here are homicidal ideations that have been proven as related to these drugs (SSRIs). Canada actually has a Prozac Defense law that allows people who are on these type drugs to use that as a defense for harming others!

Let’s use the term mentally ill for people who are actually mentally ill. I’m sick of that term getting thrown out there every time one of these punk thug kids does something. Most are not mentally ill!! They are simply wanna be thugs that like that thug culture and act accordingly. Let’s call it what is is!! Blame game is getting old!!!

    Place them in protective custody.

    Protective for us, the public.

We will never be able to give 100% protection to people in public places who are at risk from mental illness and a gun. However, we should make schools a top priority on guaranteeing the safety of children. I shot every Sunday afternoon with my family at my father’s sportsman gun club as a child, and was in NRA gun safety classes, but I am at the point where I would like to see a dialogue on how to improve school safety, and gun safety. My father always kept the gun case locked and my brother and I could only get guns under the supervision of our father who wanted to know how we were going to use them as we were always target shooting, but with all the love and trust in our family, my father NEVER left that gun case unlocked where we could just grab a gun. Gun ownership requires responsibility and following clear safety rules. Having kids just pick up a gun at home and take it to school starts with the person responsible for that gun, and sadly ends with tragic results. We need to put our politics aside and talk improved safety.

You know I used to get my butt beat for doing dumb things. And you know what happened because of it……..I became a good member of society with a good job and not living off the system.

    ” …mental illness or disability…
… sounds like he needs a community to rally behind him and get the help he needs to succeed rather than
This is the kind of stigmatization that creates psychopathic adults…”

^ All guesswork maybe. The kid might have some underlying problems that make life difficult for him but we all make choices and ought to be held accountable for them. Sounds to me like he needs some righteous & benevolent feedback like a juvenile workcamp for feral children so he can get in touch with reality. Call it “college level potty training”, The kid needs to take some ownership for his own decision making. Stimulus —-> Response, repeat. Sympathy can come later. Sadly, some of these folks can never be reached. But I applaud you for being a caring individual, Cricky.

2nd-degree misdemeanor for leaving a firearm unsecured and accessible to a minor. That is the lowest of a criminal violation, one step above an infraction which is traffic related to a seat belt violation or window tint. Our laws need to be tougher regarding access to weapons and responsibility. If you own a firearm, you are responsible for its safe storage, especially if someone within your household suffers from certain mental conditions. It’s the ugly truth and not to infringe on anyone’s 2nd Amendment right but you buy it, your responsible for it.

My 14 year old grandson is in the hospital and I have spent a lot of time with him there. Once he was able, he was allowed to have his VIDEO games.I said something about the language in it, he stated, I hadn’t really paid attention to that. He was driving a car int he game, running over people, shooting people, using the F word repeatedly. HE says he knows it is just a game not reality. BUT THERE ARE SO MANY WHO CANNOT DIFFER between the two. Parents stop letting your children play these kinds of games…get them a bicycle, basketball goal, football, anything to divert there attention away from these games… these things are babysitters too if that is YOUR PROBLEM.
I have 16 grandchildren and odds are one is going to be shot by a child in school. I DON’T LIKE THOSE ODDS, and we are so worries about bullying, I WAS a bully in school (40 years ago) but I never ever thought of taking one of those guns out of my back truck window and shooting anyone.
PRAYERS….God please held us, come back into our lives, homes and schools.
Love, Nana of 16 precious babies.

I, for one, am glad to see their pictures posted. Juvenile or not, criminals are getting younger by the day and they need to be presented for what they are. I agree, the parents names should also be incorporated as well because in a lot of cases, this could be stopped at home.

@JustSaying, God has never been removed from school – only the public prayers and stuff. If anybody wants to say a prayer, they can. If they want to live as a christian, they can. I assume you’re saying that we need to teach the bible and stuff in school and if we do that, be careful what you wish for because then it’s not going to just the bible. It will also be Jewish, Catholic, Muslim and you name it because you know all religions will demand, and get, equal time.

@Justin J – Paris Island don’t work either. I’ve seen people sent there, and other military camps, for the same specific reason. If they don’t want to go, a lot of them come back out a lot more trained and a lot more pissed off – how many of these mass shootings have happened and the person involved was a vet.

    >>William, I know you’re simply releasing the information you’re given in press releases

Wrong. There has been no press release. We originated this article and info in it.

    >> but why, if Ferguson-Resmondo is being charged as a juvenile why are media outlets releasing his name and pictures?

    >> Complete information about and the mugshots of juveniles are public record in Florida when they are charged with a felony whether it be as a juvenile or adult. It’s not different than an adult.

    >> Why aren’t his parent’s names and pictures being posted instead?

They have not been charged with a crime.

“All of the charges are felonies, and he has been charged as a juvenile.”

William, I know you’re simply releasing the information you’re given in press releases but why, if Ferguson-Resmondo is being charged as a juvenile why are media outlets releasing his name and pictures?

I understand releasing the names and images of the ones being tried as adults but I can’t get onboard with the Ransom student’s name and pictures being released.

It is painfully obvious that this CHILD has some form of mental illness or disability. After reading here, watching the news, and listening to those more familiar with the situation, it sounds like he needs a community to rally behind him and get the help he needs to succeed rather than giving his peers all the tools they need to bully him for the rest of his life.

This is the kind of situation that creates school shooters. This is the kind of stigmatization that creates psychopathic adults that are unable to adapt to society because they’ve been ostracized. This is why people hide their mental state and don’t seek help.

And if I’m putting on my judging pants like the rest of Cantonment seems to be doing – Ferguson-Resmondo has way too much access to guns, ammo, drugs, knives, and God knows what else at home. Why aren’t his parent’s names and pictures being posted instead?

What this world has come to is no resect for life. Kids and teenagers cannot get an education without the dark cloud of school shootings looming in their thoughts. Were going to have to divert this lottery money for education and spend it on metal detectors, surveillance cameras at every entrance/exit with additional security personnel to monitor it. and locked doors on campuses.

  13. Sam on February 16th, 2018 6:32 am

It all goes back to parenting or lack of it. These kids are repeatedly in trouble. Very seldom does it end well.

  14. JustSaying on February 16th, 2018 6:23 am

Put GOD back in schools and at home and discipline at home and this mess might just slow down! Too many kids rule the house now days! Teach respect and consequences, not rewards.

  15. Edward Saultus on February 16th, 2018 4:37 am

The next school shooting suspect in the making. Here is a prime example of why some juveniles need to be charged as adults. He was arrested on January 25th for possession of a firearm also and he still walks free and among our children! Where is he obtaining the firearms and the parents need to be held accountable. I’m sorry but if you have a mentally unstable child, you should really consider if have a firearm at home the wisest decision.

  16. Justin J on February 16th, 2018 4:22 am

Shave their heads and send them for a life changing vacation at Paris Island for 13 Weeks! These three stooges and MANY others need harsh discipline. The Marine Corps can help with that!
